ACME Shuts Down the "Serving the Poor, Profitably" Awards Show

On Wednesday, February 5th, ACME and its supporters brought an undignified but very justified end to the Canadian Manufacturers and Exporters (CME) and the Canadian International Development Agency's (CIDA) 11th Annual Awards for International Cooperation Gala. Held at the Canadian Museum of Civilization in Hull, Quebec. The evening culminated with ACME gaining access to the Gala and forcing the 250 executives and corporate/government stooges to evacuate the building.

As they fled the building, the Awards Show attendees were forced to walk several hundred feet through a gauntlet of chanting, ranting activists who did not miss the opportunity to administer very intimate indications of their anger, outrage and desire for justice.

This year's gala, featuring cocktails and a $175.00 a plate dinner, was dubbed "Serving the Poor, Profitably", the keynote paper delivered during the day long event. The CME, which hosts the event is Canada's largest corporate lobby group, and is the most vocal pro-business voice in the country for planet-wrecking, community-destroying institutions like the FTAA and the WTO. They were the first to oppose Kyoto, and the main focus of their agenda is expanding the markets for their member businesses through privatization of social services and liberalization of trade in goods and services.

With no arrests, only minor injuries at the hands of the police, and having effectively shutdown the Awards Show, ACME declares the evening a victory against the CME, and a small but significant victory for social justice both here in Ottawa and everywhere capitalist powers cast their shadow.

We thank all those who came out to take part in the action in blisteringly cold weather and who responded with spontaneity in the face of changing circumstances and bravery in the face of police brutality.

Mercredi, le 5 février, l'AMEC et ses défenseurs ont mis une fin indigne mais très justifiée à la 11e édition de remise annuelle de Prix canadiens d'excellence pour la coopération internationale tenu au Musée canadien des civilisations à Hull, Québec. La soirée a culminé avec l'AMEC accédant au gala et forçant les 250 cadres commerciaux et laquais corporatifs/gouvernementaux à évacuer le bâtiment.

En se sauvant du bâtiment, les participants à la remise de Prix ont été forcés à marcher plusieurs centaines de pieds, se frayant un passage à travers une foule d'activistes déclamatoire qui scandaient des slogans. Ces derniers n'ont pas manqué l'occasion de faire comprendre, de manière très intime, leur colère, leur outrage et leur désire pour la justice.

Le gala de cette année, comportant des cocktails et un dîner à $175 du plat, a été surnommé « Soulager la pauvreté dans le monde, profitablement », le papier principal livré pendant l'événement qui a durée toute la journée. Les MEC, qui accueille l'événement est le groupe de lobbying le plus influentdu Canada, et est la voix pro-affaires la plus vocale aux pays pour les institutions destructeurs de planète et de communauté comme la ZLÉA et l'OMC. Ils étaient les premiers à s'opposer à l'accord Kyoto, et le centre principal de leur ordre du jour est d'augmenter les marchés pour leurs entreprises membres par la privatisation des services sociaux et la libéralisation des échanges des marchandises et des services.

Avec aucunes arrestations, seulement des dommages mineurs aux mains de la police, et après avoir forcé efficacement l'annulation de l'événement, l'AMEC déclarent la soirée une victoire contre les MEC, et une victoire pour la justice sociale ici à Ottawa et partout ou les puissances capitalistes jète leur ombre.

Nous remercions tous ceux qui sont sortis pour participer à l'action par un temps extrêmement froid et qui ont répondu avec spontanéité face aux circonstances changeantes et avec courage face à la brutalité policière.
