The SHORTWAVE REPORT 2/7/03 ¡Listen Globally!

by Dan Roberts (outfarpress [at] saber.net)
A weekly 30 minute review of news and opinion recorded from a shortwave radio. 2 files- broadcast quality (13.2MB) and quick download (3.3MB). With times and freqs for listening at home. Free to rebroadcast. Germany, Netherlands, China, and Russia.
Dear Radio Friend,
The latest Shortwave Report (February 7) is up at the website http://www.outfarpress.com/outfarpress/shortwave.shtml in both broadcast quality 13.2MB) and quickdownload or streaming form (3.3MB) (28:55) It's free to rebroadcast, please notify me if you're airing it and haven't notified me in the last month, please mention the website if you only air a portion. If you just want to listen and have a slow connection, try the streaming version- lower sound quality but good enough and way easier if you don't have a high-speed internet connection. If streaming is a problem because of your slow connection, download the smaller file- it takes 20 minutes or less, and will play swell in any mp3 player application (RealPlayer, Winamp, Quicktime, iTunes, etc) you have on your computer.
This program will be aired on Friday evening at 7pm on KZYX/Z Philo CA, you might be able to stream via http://www.kzyx.org
There are several other streams that work better- http://members.cruzio.com/~frsc/ Freak Radio Santa Cruz (96.3fm) streams this program on Friday at 5:35pm (PST) and on Monday at 9amPST.
Also check out LavaLamp Radio (Japan)- http://www.rinku.zaq.ne.jp/bkaec205/
streaming the SWR, check out the schedule.
And the Partytown streams are great and informative- http://www.partytown.com/radio
This week's show features stories from Radio Deutsche Welle, Radio Netherlands, China Radio International, and the Voice Of Russia.
From Germany- German Chancellor Schroder criticized the 8 EU leaders who signed a letter backing the Bush stance on Iraq. Intelligence agencies have found that the possible links between Iraq and Al-Queda are overstated and in some cases non-existent. Colin Powell’s UN presentation received mixed reviews globally.
From Netherlands- First a review and deconstruction of Powell’s report to the UN. Turkey has put off deciding whether to allow US war troops to be stationed there until Feb 18. Then a piece interviewing US troops training in Kuwait.
From China- The Arab League has announced its annual summit in Cairo in early March. The draft of the Palestinian constitution has been presented.
From Russia- Russia has voted against UN involvement in the N Korea and denounced US plans to build up military presence on the penisula. British peace activists are threatening to take Tony Blair to the International Criminal Court if he takes Britain to another Gulf War. A commentary from Tuesday on the US and British forces building up in the Gulf. Then a report on the global anti-war demonstrations scheduled for Feb 15.
All that plus times and frequencies for listening at home. I hope you'll listen and air this if you're connected with a radio station. I am still wondering how to get financially compensated for the 25 hours I put into this program weekly- any ideas are appreciated. Any stations rebroadcasting this (or listeners) are welcome to donate for production costs. You can do so through the website. Many thanks to those that have donated! No Guilt!

¡FurthuR! Dan Roberts

--The notion that a radical is one who hates his country is naïve and usually idiotic. He is, more likely, one who likes his country more than the rest of us, and is thus more disturbed than the rest of us when he sees it debauched. He is not a bad citizen turning to crime; he is a good citizen driven to despair.
- H. L. Mencken
