FLASHPOINTS BROADCASTS LIVE FROM PACIFICA'S KPFT HOUSTON THIS WEEK
Dennis Bernstein and Flashpoints schedule

Wednesday, Feb 5, 2003 - Start Audio "for
-00:00 Dennis Bernstein: "AUDIOintroduction: "Nelsonreports from Kathy Kelly and Jeremy Scahill in Baghdad.. War on Iraq and the effect on Palestine.. Robert Fisk speech in Austin last weekend
-00:48 Robert Knight and the Knight Report.. Robert: "AUDIO Powell and the UN today: old wine in new bottles.. a reiteration of Bush's former allegations.. Al-Qaeda terrorist camp under US, Kurdish control, not Iraq's.. excerpts from last weekend's British PM Tony Benn audio interview with Saddam Hussein.. opposed by Russia, France, Germany.. Blix takes issue with US officials.. Nelson Mandela blasts Powell: 'unspeakable atrocities committed by the USA.. what Bush wants is to get hold of Iraqi oil'..
"Map -06:38 Dennis: "AUDIO now with Kathy Kelly in Baghdad.. Kathy: we listened to Powell's speech on shortwave.. I didn't hear Powell say Iraq has intentions to use weapons against the US.. US planning to send more than 800 missiles against Baghdad.. Powell repeated the falsehood that the inspectors were kicked out by Iraq in 1998, but actually were ordered out by the US/UN..
-09:00 Dennis: now w Jeremy Scahill, "AUDIO Flashpoints special correspondent in Baghdad.. "JeremyJeremy: I listened with members of European parliment.. clearly Powell has no smoking gun.. presenting old evidence like it is new.. stuff that could have easily been fabricated.. laughter in the room when Powell played his second audio tape, didn't sound valid at all.. the photos Powell showed, Iraqi reaction: 'no more than cartoon films'.. 'a typical American stunt'.. 'the idea of concealment is an American idea, talk to Scott Ritter'.. Dennis: about the 'other warhead' Powell says was hidden by Iraq.. Jeremy: if the US has evidence they should give it to the inspectors.. the Iraqi's not yet given a chance to response.. Dennis: the US saying they are going to drop thousands of bombs on Baghdad?.. Jeremy: they're going to be bombing the cradle of civilization into oblivion.. a nation of 24 million ordinary people.. facing the world's biggest firing squad.. Red Cross being pressured by the US to pull out of Baghdad.. US afraid they would condemn the effects of the bombing on civilians.. there are delegations from all over the world coming into Spanish women artists.. parlimentarians from Europe.. delegations from Russia, China.. if Rumsfeld can shake Saddam's hand when he was using chemical weapons, why can't the US talk to him now, when he hasn't used any weapons of mass destruction since 1988.. Fox News is paying the Iraqi government half a million dollars to operate here.. calling the peace movement dupes for Saddam Hussein.. more than 200 journalists paying $500 a day to stay here.. Dennis: if the bombs start falling?.. Jeremy: we have to start stockpiling water.. debating if the hotel we're staying in is safe.. housing a lot of international activists.. we hear that the US is going to give journalists three days to leave, then they will bomb the press center.. we are contemplating renting an apartment behind Al-Jazeera.. I was talking to a woman in Basra.. some people digging wells.. buying up canned goods, bottled water.. few people talking about going to shelters because the US bombed one shelter in 1991, killing 400 women and children.. people saying we can't believe the US is going to do this to us.. I look at the street kids, shining shoes, and I wonder where are they going to hide when the bombs start falling..
-24:55 music break Michael Franti and Spearhead
-27:10 Dennis: now w "AUDIO Professor As'ad AbuKhalil.. "As'ad AbuKhalil: I was not impressed by Powell's speech at all.. I was expecting some secret picture of Osama sitting on Saddam's lap.. Powell raises more question.. remembering Goebbel's statenent, 'propaganda is constant repetition'.. Powell's speech is more of Bush's constant repetition of unproven charges.. intended for the inunitiated.. the Iraqi National Congress has an unlimited supply of 'informers' who can alledge anything.. yesterday a picture of Rumsfeld shaking hand with Saddam.. two obscure Palestine organization now heard from since 1982.. then speaks about (organization), in the area controlled by Kurds and the US CIA.. Dennis: I'm sure they are cheering in Israel now.. AbuKhalil: US and Israel conducting missile tests in Israel.. the bin Laden link is absent in the speech.. if you were to judge this as a research paper, it would get a failing grade.. Dennis: Powell didn't say anything about fighting for democracy in the region.. AbuKhalil: we are all aware of what the US has in mind for the future of Iraq.. a man wanted for embezzelment in Jordan.. Iraq to be run by a pro-US dictator.. just like in Afghanistan.. a report that people are flocking to join the Taliban and Al-Qeada in Pakistan.. Dennis: how will this play in the Arab World.. AbuKhalil: even if there is an easy US victory.. I think we will see a lot more violence..
-38:06 music break Michael Franti and Spearhead
-39:35 Dennis: award wining British journalist, Robert Fisk "AUDIO gave a talk Monday "Robertin Austin, Texas titled, 9/11 - Talk About It, But For God's Sake Don't Ask Why.. Robert: about THE VAPID HOPELESS GUTLESS WRITING THAT PASSES FOR JOURNALISM IN AMERICA ANYMORE.. journalists have no business obeying orders from the military that make them look like combatants.. a Fox reporter in Afghanistan turned up brandishing a pistol and saying he wanted to kill Osama bin Laden.. about a Newsweek cover, 'The Evil One'.. US journalism has become a right wing fundamentalist outreach platform.. when did we first hear about the Iraqi connection to 9/11?.. at some point Osama was faded out, and Saddam was faded in.. an astounding transition in US policy.. and the US media played right along.. "Spoofsuddenly the NY Times started running long 'anonymous' stories about Iraq.. stories sourced to 'officials', 'terrorist experts'.. I think the 'NY Times' should be renamed, 'Officials Say'.. how did target Kabul become target Baghdad?.. phrases: 'a blood price', but principally paid by the poor.. then 'Hezballah may be the 'A Team' of terrorism'.. 'a blood debt'.. 'heart of darkness'.. about the many Bush officials that have connections to Israel.. now Osama bin Laden has been airbrushed out of the picture.. not one mention of him in months.. about 'Al-Qaeda' remnants..
