Aradia
I separated the "Avalon and Aradia" posts, so that it wouldn't take so long for all the photos to come up...please help to save Aradia and a surrounding buffer zone...
Aradia is a 600-1000-year-old Old Growth redwood, which is on Gypsy Mountain, just up the ridge from where David "Gypsy" Chain was murdered, on September 17th, 1998, when an enraged Maxxam/Pacific Lumber faller began intentionally falling trees at non-violent Earth First! activists.
Despite the hard, video-taped evidence of the logger screaming his intentions of falling trees at the activists, saying that he wished he had his pistol, and that he was going to start packing it into the woods with him in the future (deadly intentions), the corrupt Humboldt Co. Sheriff's Dept. officially lied and called this act of violence an "accident."
A civil suit was filed by Gypsy's family, which they finally won, 3-&-1/2 years later, and the Gypsy Memorial was established as part of the out-of-court-settlement, including the tree that was fallen on Gypsy, plus a 100-ft. buffer around the tree, as well as a publicly accessible memorial, just off the highway at the base of Gypsy Mountain.
Right after the wrongful death civil suit was settled, Maxxam/PL filed a brand new THP, 01-382, "Van Duzen View," which includes clearcutting Aradia and the beautiful forest around her.
Aradia was left out of the memorial, even though David "Gypsy" Chain was helping to defend Aradia the week that he was killed. A tree-sit had been put up in Aradia in 1998, and Gypsy was helping to support that tree-sit, just before he was killed. A new tree-sit was put up in late 2001, and Aradia has been constantly occupied since January of 2002. There are people in Aradia at this very moment, and Earth First! has committed to support the Aradia/Gypsy Mountain tree-village until Aradia and a protective buffer can be saved and, ideally, added to the Gypsy Memorial.
Maxxam/PL has been informed of the historical significance of Aradia, in relation to Gypsy's death and life. If they cut Aradia now, it will be out of disrespect for Gypsy.
Please contact Maxxam/PL and encourage them to add Aradia to the Gypsy Memorial.
And please contact NCEF! to find out how you can help to support the Aradia/Gypsy Mountain tree-village.
