Avalon

Before and during liquidation logging photos of a beautiful area known to us as "Avalon," in the Grizzly Creek/Van Duzen River watershed. Please help to save what's left of this precious area...

These photos were taken from the Aradia tree-sit, as tree-sitters were forced to see and hear the devastation of this once-pristine forest, just across the valley from Gypsy Mountain.
This area was one of the "Class E" stands that were both approved by the CDF, AND "released" by Fish & Game, as a result of judge Golden gutting his stay order.
Maxxam/PL should never have been able to log this area, since it is endangered species habitat. The HCP strikes again, allowing the "incidental take" of spotted owl and marbled murrelet nesting habitat.
Notice the delta-shaped area of Old Growth, in the "before" pictures, surrounded on all sides by second growth forest, clearcuts, and meadows.
There may still be time to save what's left of this area. It is adjacent to Grizzly Creek State Park, and so could be easily added to the park.
Please apply pressure where pressure is needed to save what's left of this beautiful area, and contact us to find out more about how you can help...

This was such a beautiful Old Growth forest...there were some attempts at saving this area through direct action, including some arrests and a pod dangling underneath a bridge leading into Avalon.
Unfortunately, Maxxam/PL was bringing in multiple logging crews via helicopter, right around the holidays, and we just didn't have enough people to stop them...we need a network of emergency action alert activists, who could come to Humboldt to do direct action when the time arises...call us...
Again, this was a pristine Old Growth Redwood forest, and endangered species habitat, and should never have been logged.
The fact that it was shows the obscene level of corruption within the so-called "regulatory" agencies, such as the CDF and Fish & Game, who must be bought and sold out to allow anyone to log these areas which should be protected by the federal Endangered Species and Clean Water Acts, state laws, and common sense.
This level of corruption is completely unacceptable, and should completely outrage the public, since most of the rest of the country has already been hacked down and paved over. We must do something to hold these corrupt agencies and individuals responsible for their negligence, and to save what's left of Avalon.

This is what Maxxam/PL calls "selective cut" and "sustainable." Notice how the nearly all of the Old Growth on the right side of the hillside is gone, right under the axe-shaped clearcut? This is what Maxxam/PL calls "shelterwood removal," which is another way of saying "remove all of the biggest trees." The idea behind it is (a)take all the Old Growth and (b)provide more sunlight for the younger trees, thereby "increasing productivity."
The problem here is that (a) they destroy the canopy and the real endangered species habitat and (b) the younger trees get too much sun, as they are SUPPOSED TO reach for the sunlight coming through a full canopy, thereby encouraging them to reach for the sky, instead of having so much sunlight that they grow bushy, creating a mass of branches, which eventually die, leaving a dense understory of dead branches, which the owls and other predatory birds cannot effectively swoop down through, so their population suffers, while the rodent population booms. Over time, this leads to the loss of owls, bald eagles(which have been spotted in this area), and an overall unhealthy "forest."
And, in the immediate sense, this has meant the loss of HUGE trees, nests, and one of the last pristine Old Growth forests left on the planet...very sad...please contact us to find out how you can help save what's left...
They left Zen, now known as "The One Who Survived," probably because she would have shattered upon impact, being SO old.

There just weren't enough people to stop them...we can still petition the state government to save what's left, and add it to the Grizzly Creek State Park.
Another route could be to petition extremely wealthy people to just buy the area, and donate it to the park and the public, since the government has proven itself to be completely incompetent in protecting these areas. So goes corruption...
Please contact us to coordinate efforts to save what's left of Avalon, and use your imagination to empower yourselves to come up with creative solutions to these problems.
We hope to hear from you soon....
