Bay Area Will Join in Peace Demonstrators Across US & UK

by Celia Alario (celia [at] riseup.net)
Day of Action at Gas Stations In Both Nations Will Call for Peace,
National Security Via Reduction of Dependence on Oil--NOT War in Iraq
WHEN: Tuesday February 4, 2003

WHERE: Multiple locations in San Francisco & Marin County, and at gas stations across the US & UK.
San Francisco: 7:00AM-10:00AM, Castro Street Chevron, Castro & Market Streets

4:30PM, Market Street Union 76 at 1998 Market Street
Marin County: 4 - 7 PM at 5 locations:
San Rafael Shell on 4th St (where Miracle Mile begins)
San Rafael Shell on Irwin (between Second and Third)
Greenbrae Shell, Chervon (295 Sir Francis Drake)
Mill Valley Union 76 (Camino Alto and East Blithedale)
Mill Valley ARCO (101 South, Seminary Drive)

WHAT: From Marin County to Miami Beach, from London, England to Logansport, Indiana, demonstrations at more than a hundred gas stations in the United States and United Kingdom will send the message of ‘NO WAR FOR OIL’. Demonstrators will condemn military action and call on the Bush and Blair Administrations to reduce their nations’ dependence on oil, as a key step towards sane national security policies.

Concerned citizens will educate their communities, neighbor-to- neighbor, on the close links between the Bush Administration and transnational oil corporations and voice opposition to a brutal war for oil. These peaceful demonstrations will take place on the eve of another critical round of talks at the United Nations, and mark the first ever ‘Day of Action for Peace’ focused solely on oil. Americans and Brits of all kinds, many of whom have never demonstrated before, will do so at the gas pumps, the very point where the conflict is ‘fueled’ every day.

WHO: Concerned citizens from across LA. The Day of Action has been endorsed dozens of organizations. (See below) For additional background, interviews are also available with:

-Ralph Nader, Consumer Advocate and Citizen Works founder; 202-265-6164.
-Steve Kretzmann, Oil Industry Analyst for the Institutive for Policy Studies; 202-497-1033
-Michael Renner, a senior researcher with the Worldwatch Institute; (631) 369-6896
-Michael Klare, author of 'Resource Wars'; 413-549-4600x5563

WHY: The evidence that oil is a factor in the rush to war in Iraq far outweighs the evidence that Iraq possesses weapons of mass destruction, or that it is connected to Al Qaeda. Control of oil should never be a reason to go to war - and on February 4th, thousands of people will head to their local gas stations to say just that.

The Feb 4th Day of Action is endorsed by the following organizations:
Action for Social and Ecological Justice, Amazon Watch, American Heritage Service, Black Voices for Peace, Capital District Greens, Charlotte Fellowship of Reconciliation, Citizen Works, Code Pink, Corp Watch, Democracy Rising, Earth First!, Global Exchange, Global Response, Green Party of Manhattan, Greenpeace USA, Middle East Research and Information Project, MOSOP UK, Pacific Environment, Peace Action, People Against Oppression and War, Power Shift, Project Underground, Rainforest Action Network, San Bernadino County Democratic Central Committee, Sierra Student Coalition, Social Justice Center of Marin, Student Environmental Action Coalition (SEAC), Students for a Free Tibet, Sustainable Energy and Economy Network, The Ecotopian Society, The Ruckus Society and United for Peace ###
