Maxxam/PALCO Attempt to Smoke-Out Tree-sitter

by Krzy Brd (yambu [at] tidepool.com)
FIre and burning chemicals used to baddger tree-sitter.
As outrage against Maxxam/Pacific Lumber’s flagrant disregard for public opinion and scientific evidence continues, the amount of tree-sits in Humboldt reach record levels. In the Freshwater watershed alone close to 20 tree-sits now stand. Maxxam continues to excessively log this heavily damaged area, including the cutting old growth, massive clear cutting, and logging on steep terrain. Such practices not only destroy the diversity of life, they cause extreme erosion and flooding in the area.

As the new District Attorney questions the legality and danger of sending climbers to remove tree sitters, Maxxam tried out a new torturous tactic of intimidation and abuse to the non-violent, civil disobedient protesters in the trees. At the end of their work day on Friday, workers set two huge slash piles (debris left behind after logging) on fire about 300 feet from tree-sitter Spider Queen, in the tree Utopia. Utopia is the latest sit put up in the Freshwater area, saved from cutting on Thursday. Usual slash is burned after logging is completed in a timber harvest area. It is highly unusual that slash piles would be burned in an active logging site. Spider Queen reports that Maxxam workers laughed as they left the fires. Thick smoke filled the skies, choking out air in the tree. This was particularly dangerous due to Spider Queens chronic asthma. This was also dangerous because of the hazardous chemicals used to ignite the fires, posing unknown long term health risks. Spider Queen’s asthma got so bad that a replacement was sent up with a gas mask. Utopia remains saved despite Maxxam’s strong handed tactics. If you would like to express your outrage on this latest disregard for the civil rights and safety of the people by Maxxam call these numbers:

Dear God in Heaven, what is this. We are to protect our OWN. God put us here to protect human life and protect the earth. I won't stand for the terrorism within our own country. President Bush, you need to save these treesitters and Trees!. You, Mr. President, you are responsible for "our own people" from being terrorized by companies like Pacific Lumber (Maxxam). Step up to the plate Mr. President, step up to the plate Congress--help these treesitters. Designate the treesites as sanctuaries, respecting all Life. Memorials these trees-- to human lives that have been cut in their prime, representing/reminding that no life shall be ended--because we will never know their potential. Where is the call from within, the human community, to stop the terrorism of our own people by companies like Maxxam. Dear God, Heavenly Father, in Jesus Christ name I ask that souls unite and respect the life you gave us.

"God put us here to protect human life and protect the earth"

Just how do you know this? The earth will be fine no matter what we do to it. We're merely a blip on the radar in earth's history. The planet's been through much worse than man and has done just fine. So please, enough with your arrogance.

The reason I come and go is the same
Animal game for me
You call it rain
But the human name
Doesn\'t mean shit to a tree

yeah yeah, yeah people.
nature was here before humans, and nature will be here after humans. then what is the purpose? this human span of existence, what does it mean? we all have our truths, and until you have sat alone in nature on some sort of vision quest, or are simply an indigo child, you learn that it's all just a test. how will you lead your life? from love, or hate? the infinite spirit is here, right here, right now, sees all this demolition, and these patterns of destruction will continue to occur until we learn what it is truley all about. we've got to let love rule.

What a wonderful idea to dedicate the trees where the treesitters are as a memorial. How about the treesits being a living tree memorial to the people who died on September 11th. Also, the living memorial land and trees, dedicated to the astronaults. What the treesitters are doing, where they are treesitting should be dedicated to those people of Sept. 11, the astronaults and also importantly the soldiers that have lost their lives fighting for all of us. Great idea Sierra!

I agree, with Otter and Sierra. A living memorial of the treesits to Sept. 11th, our military and the NASA space shuttle.

Humanity valued all of them.

Let make this memorial of the treesits dedicated to all those people a reality.

The land, the trees are worth saving. Memorial to those of NASA space shuttle, to September 11th and to our Military, here in North California. Their passing, their deaths all influenced us. Let's, do the memorial to them for what they had the capacity to be but as Sierra said cut in the prime of their life. They all had and have value, let us not forget any of them or anyone who has sacrificed their lives. Let's help the treesitters to make the trees and ancient groves be the memorial, legacy to the people, we valued. And their families, relatives, friends and USA will have land in California for the memorial with trees as standing memorials too.. Also, treesitters have lost their lives too.

Species that are threatened by deforestation need a lot more than just memorials trees if they are to survive and recover. We need to protect whole forests in addition to remnant old-growth or "residual" trees.

What could the Earth possibly have undergone before the humans arrival. Name one animal other than a human which lights things on fire. Name one other crature in the history of the world who alters their environment around themselves to suite them. Fact is there are none. I don't see hippopotamus tearing down forests to make room for a steel and concrete highway. I've never seen a camel try to re-route water into the desert so he could grow grass on his lawn. Think about it people, Humans are the single most destructive living force in the known world. We destroy ANYTHING and EVERYTHING just cause we can. Who needs a forest when you can have a concrete jungle, right? I think not.

So Maxxam is terrorizing the activists now, huh? Spider Queen knew the risks she was taking when she climbed up that redwood (which I doubt likes having her perched there like some kind of parasite, since trees have feelings, you know). She, along with all the other tree-sitters, are taking their lives in their own hands by climbing these trees, as well as endangering the climbers like Eric Shatz who are sent up to remove these lawbreaking tresspassers. Is PL "terrorizing" the tree-sitters? Maybe, from a certain liberal point of view. But lets not forget that these parasites on our local economy are indeed breaking the law by tresspassing on private property. By blocking logging roads and vandalizing logging equipment, these activists are engaging in their own form of eco-terrorism. I applaude Judge Dale Reinholtsen for his ruling; any measures should be taken to safely dislodge these activists from their posts, and once on the ground they should be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

How can you be so ignorant. The comment by your stupid was the most inteligent comment I read. How can you say the earth will be here no matter what you do to it? How about your quality of life? How about your air you breath? How about your water you drink? How about your climate? I guess you live here also. Do you like the cool weather? Cut some more trees and you will see devastation. I beleive you are very uneducated. Why don't you spend some time doing alittle research on the internet enstead of just mouthing off with out thinking.
