Christian Aid report malnutrition in Gaza as bad as Zimbabwe, blames Israel
The disturbing report, Losing ground: Israel, poverty and the Palestinians, examines in detail how Israel's occupation of the West Bank and the Gaza Strip has been the primary cause of the destruction of the Palestinian economy and widespread malnutrition.
The report calls on the Israeli's to respect international law including the 4th Geneva Convention which forbids collective punishment and the seizure and destruction of municipal property and key UN resolutions related to land and settlement. A main conclusion of the report is that a just and lasting peace for both communities and hope for the eradication of poverty requires an end to Israel's illegal occupation of the West Bank and Gaza, through a peace process based on international law.
The report is also addressed to the International Community, including Britain, who have continued to fail to exert pressure and work proactively to resolve the complex set of problems which contribute to the slide into poverty. The report calls on the Department of Trade and Industry to explain how Israel's status as a target market for preferential trade is compatible with Israeli's failure to comply with international law.
