Racism & War-Mongering at KMEL

by Youth Media Council
Rapid Response
Target: KMEL 106.1 FM
Just 15 minutes ago, announcer Super Snake on KMEL-FM made this statement on-air: "the President¹s state of the union speech was short and simple. Well I got my own way, and it¹s called 'bomb, bomb, bomb,' with a song entitled 'Bomb, Bomb, Bomb.'"

The lyrics of this song ranged from, "Sadaam we¹re going to kick your ass and bomb you like we did in the past," to "Iraqi girls shake it fast and sing it with me," and, "Sadaam, you shady and you running out of time, we 'bout to run up on your towns with AK's and with nines."

DEMAND: Are you opposed to racism and war? KMEL touts itself as The People's Station. Please call 106.1 KMEL-FM and tell them what the people think of using our publicly-owned airwaves to promote racism and war-mongering.

Call KMEL toll free at their caller line 1-800-955-KMEL, Stacey Cunningham at 415-538-5932, or Gabrielle Medecki, Marketing Director 415-538-5647 and tell them:

KMEL should not play songs that encourage our people to support Bush's dangerous and racist plan to intensify bombing in Iraq. Hundreds of thousands of Iraqi children have died due to U.S. bombing and sanctions, along with thousands of U.S. soldiers that became ill or died during the Gulf War. We don¹t want our budgets slashed and our children dead for Bush's racist vendetta war, and we don¹t want KMEL playing that song!

Without getting into how banal the song is, where is the racism. Simply using disparaging remarks about one's enemy IS NOT racism. That word gets used ENTIRELY TOO MUCH around here. The KMEL song in no way contains racism.

What do you mean by "our" enemy? I have no problem with Iraqi people, so they are not my enemy. But I guess they would be if I were a white supremacist with a negative attitude about Iraqis or any other Arabic/Semitic group-THAT's what makes the song racist(and nationalist, as in FASCIST)!
