Sideshows at Post-Super Bowl Riots in Oakland

by foto
These pictures are from the riots that took place after the Super Bowl in Oakland. See below for more description.
sideshow.jpg
These sideshows -- which amount to souped-up cars peeling out in circles, or burning their tires on the ground -- were taking place up and down International Blvd. Crowds of about 300 - 400 people were circled around an intersection and the sideshows went on in the middle. As police used tear gas and wooden bullets to disperse one intersection, people hopped in their cars and converged on another intersection. Other people just wandered around on foot. The atmosphere was all about fun, hanging out, truly "taking back the streets." It was also about reminiscing of the sideshows that used to take place every weekend until Oakland police started an aggressive and public campaign to seize people's cars for the city.

This intersection is Seminary and International Blvd.

"Sidin' is the newest street sport to emerge from the East Bay inner city, and already it's against the law.
Sidin' is a semi-spontaneous poor man's car show -- that's it, that's all, no drag racing, no violence. This ain't "The Fast and the Furious" people, it's a rolling show room, and stunt driving exhibition, with a party/club atmosphere.

Sideshow!

by JR

Since the 1980s Black Oakland has been known as the sideshow capital of the Hip Hop world. A sideshow is a late night event where a group of youngsters get together to compete against each other to see who has the dopest looking ride, as well as to see which driver has the most “handles” behind the steering wheel. On any given night in East Oakland, driving down MacArthur or Foothill, you are bound to see Chevelles, Mustangs, Camaros, and Grand Nationals with racing stripes figure eightin’, doing doughnuts, fish tailin’, burning rubber or in the parking lot locking up their tires. Oakland has been famous for “stuntin’” like this since before Richie Rich and the 415 rapped about it on their song “Sideshow” in 1989.

Now, after two decades of harassment and tickets, the Oakland Police have stepped up their campaign of opposition with a gang of new measures and strategies to try and wipe the sport out. In 2002, Oakland city and California state officials are making a political issue out of sideshows, when the real issue is a lack of recreation and entertainment for Oakland’s young people.

As of March 23, Oakland’s Black police chief, Richard Word, and the Oakland Police Officers Association put a plan into effect that puts 60 extra police on Oakland streets. That’s in addition to the 40 cops that already patrol the streets on any given weekend. The price tag to the taxpayers is $1.2 million more than what is already spent on policing.

So in essence, under the disguise of “wanting to stop the sideshows,” they are getting the community to accept having more police in the Black community harassing young people, more of our people going to jail, more police murder and brutality, more police in the ‘hood to plant dope and guns on us – which is not unusual looking back to cops like the so called “Riders.”

City officials have also hooked up with the infamous California Sen. Don Perata to draft Senate Bill 1489 that will allow the police to tow and hold cars for 30 days at the registered owner’s expense, no matter who is driving the vehicle, if the driver is cited for “reckless driving,” “reckless driving in a parking facility,” “exhibition of speed” or “participating in a speed contest.”

City officials have also considered reducing the number of lanes and installing more barriers on the streets that are popular sideshow arenas. The Oakland Police have persuaded the Pak’n Save, on Hegenberger, to build a fence around their property so that sideshow participants can’t use their parking lot to rally up forces. They have also persuaded the Taco Bell, on the same street to close at 11 p.m. instead of 3 a.m. to discourage young people from coming to the area late at night. In the media, the chief of police is justifying all of this in the name of U’Kendra Johnson, a 22-year-old Oakland woman who was killed in a sideshow related accident in February.

It’s funny how you can tell how someone feels about you by how they deal with you. Recently, my homeboy bought me the movie “Lamumba.” When I watched it, I noticed how the police officers, who were working for the Belgian government, treated the people of the Congo. Although the cops were Black people, their jobs cultivated a sense of separation between the way they viewed themselves in relation to the people they were patrolling. In the movie, every time there was a problem in the community, the only answer considered was to bring in military force by way of the police.

I realized that that is how every colonizer deals with the colonized. When Israel wants something from the Palestinians, they bring in their hired guns. Oakland and Don Perata can care less about the inner-city youth who live in the flatlands. “If they are bored, send them to jail” seems to be the bipartisan line.

Isn’t the government supposed to work in the interest of the people? If the youth want to “side,” common sense would tell me, if I were a politician who wanted youngsters off the street, to open up a sideshow arena. With $1.2 million to invest annually, it shouldn’t be hard for the city of Oakland to pin down a spot.

If the city and state cared as deeply as they try to portray on the news, over the years they would have already paid for a location, and had they done that, U’Kendra might be breathing today. It is unfortunate that her young life got taken at a sideshow, but we cannot let the police use this as an excuse to lock more of us up.

In March of this year, a young white girl by the name of Nicole Cecil was killed at a hockey game when she was hit in the temple by a hockey puck. Since her death, we haven’t heard anybody talk about shutting down the National Hockey League.

When it comes to white folks, politicians want to add more safety precautions so that the fun doesn’t turn deadly. When it comes to Black folks, politicians want to shut our sport down and make it illegal.

Why is it that the Monster Trucks could come to the Oakland Coliseum but we can’t use the Oakland Coliseum for a sideshow competition?

These politicians don’t represent us, and that is the reason why we should be readying ourselves for the revolution! There can’t be any peace in Oakland until we, collectively, get a piece of property to have sideshows

Dis'n SUV's is cool, but don't touch poor people's Smog Machines.
"All over the Bay Area young people are using the car to express freedom. This is nothing new. California has always been home to young rebels and the rides that define them. What's new is the urgency youngstas are bringing to alternative car sport, and the opposition they face from law enforcement. From Oakland to the South Bay "Street Racers" and "Sideshow" drivers have had the hammer brought down on them by authorities wishing to curb the urge to ride and side. Russell Morse reports from the San Jose Street racing scene, J.R. Valery breaks down the Oakland Side Show. "

Maybe sideshows are the new critical mass?
the repression against sideshows seems far worse than critical mass, i mean stealing someone's car ???? thats fucked and people need their cars for work, life, whatever.
by bent rider
Sideshows the New Critical Mass???

Ha Ha Ha.

Cars expression of freedom????

LOL
by fasdf
Sideshows are an expression of a community that lives in an area where there are few places to hang out. As with most attempts to have fun in poor communities, even seemingly legal things quickly become illegal.

Critical Mass on the other hand is slighlty political, mainly middle class and rare enough that it doesnt really serve the same community need.

While side shows may be dangerous they are not aimed at disruption and would prefer to be left alone. Critical Mass on the other hand exists to get attention and while there are some attacks by the police they are far less than those against sideshows...

Its not really a question of cars vs bikes. Bikes can be fun. Skateboards can be fun. Riding around in cars can be fun. The choice of the police to target fun activities that are mainly in poor communities is the issue...
by bent rider
The use of cars as a recreational outlet (riding around to have fun) by the poor community is laughable.

Cars are not cheap in many ways.
by OAK E
I have a bike but I cant really take it everywhere like if I am 5 minutes late for work its a big deal and I need to drive to get there. I love driving my car and especially to get out of the city and drive on open roads its a great feeling. I dont know who all these haters are
by ssssssss
that looks like fun!!!!
when is the next one?
by Oaklander
perhaps community-building events for young people (although as anyone who knows the phenomena knows, sideshow participants are not "youth" but are adults in their twenties and thirties), but they are also extremely disturbing, dangerous, threatening and not a good use of resources (cars, gas, rubber, smoke). They are also very dangerous activities. This is obvious to any honest person.

I don't understand the obsession with noise (sideshows, booming stereo systems, the new tailpipe whistles, quickly speeding off the line) that so many Oaklanders are into. I just don't get it--what's so fun about disturbing your neighbors? What am I going to learn about The System by a bunch of young folks keeping me up late at night and endangering their lives and the lives of strangers?

It's fucking idiotic.
by homie
You're right, Oaklander. What's wrong with these people, anyway? Don’t they know how to have clean, decent fun? Why don't they hang out at the yacht club, or flying around in their private planes? Why don’t they just fly down to Rio for the weekend and chill on Ipanema Beach or go stay at their summer homes on the Riviera for a while?
by bent rider
Why don't they get on a bike and take a ride up to skyline and grizzly peak.

For the price of a set of shiny wheels or 6 months insurance for that Smog Machine, any one could buy a brand new top of the line bicycle.

Low cost recreation, low impact to the enviroment.
Does not contribute to global terror.

by hmmm
critical mass people are so divisive, i cant believe they are on here posting shit about people. it makes me think that bike people are crazy and in some exclusionary cult. it makes me wish that berkeley had been the target instead of the world trade centers.
by Oaklander
Since your lack of imagination means that you must either endanger pedestrians and other involuntary participants of sideshows, car races and other ghetto bullshit, or be Joe Preppy and go on down to the yacht club, let me give you a short list of a wide variety of recreational activities that can be done at nobody else's expense:

1) Read a book
2) Go to a bar and get drunk with your friends (whatever other patrons think, it is a bar anyway)
3) Stay home and play dominoes, mah jongg, poker whatever
4) Get high and listen to music
5) Go to a concert
6) Go to the movies
7) Go play pickup basketball, football, soccer
8) Ride a bike around
9) Sit at home and play Playstation or X Box or something
10) Watch TV
11) Take a nap
12) Make dinner/lunch/breakfast
13) Hang out with your family (gasp!)

...need I go on?

Don't be such a reactionary rationalizer of other people's shitty behavior. Don't act like all of your revolutionary class champions are out there causing havoc just waiting for objective conditions to make things right.

Most folks of all ages, sexes, classes and races think sideshows and other related activities are disturbing and dangerous. Wake up.

Whatever you may think: just because you're poor and male doesn't mean that you can do whatever you want. In fact, as these folks continue to insist on committing illegal activities in the name of "the hood" or "the Raider Nation" or "Oakland," the cops will have their jobs made all that much easier.
by bent rider
Not posting shit about people, but about stupid, usless, polluting behavior.

Squeeling cars around in intersections, creating clouds of smoke, is destructive not recreation.

And to put a "class" spin on it is baiting.

The girl killed at the hockey game chose freely to attend that game. The people living in a neighborhood or on a public street aren't choosing to have cars spinning out of control near them.

I agree there should be a place to hold sideshow competitions where those who want to participate/watch can do so without any risk to innocent bystanders.

>>> When it comes to white folks, politicians want to add more safety precautions so that the fun doesn’t turn deadly <<<

Would the sideshow participants accept safety precautions, or would they feel this diminished their sport?
by Oaklander
I could not agree more: the coliseum or the arena (or even the parking lots) are great places for sideshows and that's where they should happen. Then, everyone there will be there voluntarily, and they can be organized to ensure safety.

On streets lined with the homes and businesses occupied by people who have no interest in sideshows? No way.

its pretty easy for cops to catch bicyclists. why doesnt bent rider want to complain about all the other cars that went to the superbowl? is it because they werent used to defy the police?

Poor ?? Have you seen the $5000.00 sound systems ?/ or the megabuck performance improvements to their cars ??

I wonder if the owners home lives are as well endowed..

But, the point that there is sheer boredom among the youth of today is right on the mark. This may sound corny, but I remember my younger years growing up in the east side of san jose. Back in the 60s...we had the San Jose Speedway..the Fremont Dragstrip....

and the freedom to roam the entire east side on our bicycles..from Story and King to Alum Rock park...this was our domain..the kids of today only seem to have video games as an outlet..

I raised a son in this same area..and i was surprised at how little there is to do in this valley for teens. The only options seem to be video arcades and malls. My own upbringing had very little parental supervision...as long as we were home at night, we were free to roam the world..not an option these days..

I tried to take an active roll in my son's life and expose him to many activities that would later hold his interest...from backpacking (which he loathes) to sporting events...he was usually by my side. The moral of this story ?? Don't blame the current climate for not entertaining your children...that is the parents job...My parents were lucky and were able to raise 4 children without much interaction or supervision...but times have changed...If parents spent 1/2 the time with their children as they do caring for their cars, sharpening their (golf, bowling, pool) game...then the incidents of last weekend would not happen.

I know that it is easier to blame the city government for its failing the youth of today..but look around you...Youths are succeeding elsewhere..and with less...the difference ?? Parents that care...

so oaklander you don't remember the laundry list of problems that the side shows caused in Oakland over the past two years, businesses vandalized, numerous assaults, 1 rape , several assaults with deadly weapons, and one murder. (in Oakland) just kids...hav'en fun....
they just had a murder in san jose that resulted from gang activity, on the strip used by cruzing teens and young adults. who want to race
you must have a very short attention span. this is an accident waiting to happen (pun intended)

If you think rape only occurs at a fucking sideshow, you need to open your eyes. Rape happens at a fucking country club but I dont see you arguing that those should be shut down. Fight rape, not sideshows.

As for the wingnut hippie who says cars are destructive, your attitude is destructive. Stay in Berkeley for the good of all humanity.

Sideshows are a fun thing to do and we're allowed to congregate in public whether you piglovers like it or not.

we need to consider the environment in our daily actions. by promoting gasoline engines and cars of any type you are encouraging you youth of Oakland to pollute the air with cancer causing gasses. can't you and your friends help us make a clean world?

we must work to ban cars mass transit it earth friendly and it is fun.

we need to be globaly responsable, and not be putting around in our little smog belching cars.
we all need to give up our cars to save the planet.

we also need to worry about the soil erosion problem.
did they teach you about that in school?
we only have 3/4 of an inch of top soil left in most farm land states. this will lead to wide spread food shortages in the not too distant future. this is a realy scary thought but there is some thing we can do.
Has anyone shown you how to make a compost heap?
you know almost all household garbage can be used in compost .. this way we can regenerate the top soil we use to grow food.

Easy Compost Recipe

Find a well-draining spot out of direct sunlight. Whether or not you use a compost bin is optional.
Start with a layer of "brown" material, like straw and leaves.
Add a layer of "green" material, like grass clippings.
Alternate layers of "brown" and "green" materials as they are available.
Turn the mixture every three to five days. You may turn it less frequently or not at all, but the compost will take longer to "cook".
Water regularly, making sure to keep the pile fairly moist.
If possible, keep the pile about 3'x 3'x 3'. Smaller piles will still work, but more slowly.
If you have a thermometer available, you can test the temperature of the pile. When it begins to cool, it is time to turn and water the pile.
Do not forget to add animal manure, if at all possible. In order of most to least beneficial, choose rabbit, chicken, sheep, horse, steer, cattle, duck and pig.
add meat, fish, bones, dairy foods, food leftovers, oils; pet feces or kitty litter; news papers, junk mail, sawdust, cardboard or chips from wood;

by OAKLAND

yes go back to school and learn to behave like a civilized person. you must have skipped that class while you where in reform school. or is this the way all of Oakland behaves.
the fact that when some one tries to help you out of your backwards thinking you throw a hissy fit. like a child in a supermarket.
your ongoing pollution of the planet is not welcomed by the rest of humanity.
earth1 is right, conservation is the way to go. if you are too stupid to see this then may-be reconsidering driving would not be a bad idea.
