I want to be like you. How do you do it?

by Chris S.
I'm about to turn 18 and move out on my own. Please tell me how to live a responsible life.
I will graduate high school and turn 18 this year. Then I will move out and get my own place. I have been reading all of the interesting articles on this website for weeks now.

My parents want me to go to college. Are there any colleges in the US that aren't part of the capitalist-fascist system? Do they have financial aid?

If I don't go to college, how should I get money? How do all of you make your money in order to pay rent and buy food and stuff? I would appreciate any advice on how to get a job and not be part of the capitalist-fascist system.

Thanks for your help!

Chris

It is possible to get a job doing activism but there are not many jobs and they are mainly with large NGO type groups. Other than that, most people have to work at normal jobs and do this type of work in our free time.

I've heard Evergreen has some interesting aspects. So does UCSC. But school is what you make of it. Even in a hardcore med program, like UCSF, people in there stress that you can make the program what YOU want.

The thing to remember, as long as you are an UNDERgraduate, you have the highest opportunity for grants and Federal Aid (until you're doing a PhD). Don't not apply for places you want thinking you can't afford them - if you can get in to a school, you may get funded almost entirely by grants and aid. But this depends on what state, etc. In the year before I went to college my father started his own business and recorded a negative income - that's ideal for state and federal aid. If you're on your own, making nothing, it's also good. I got so much aid that I didn't have to work in school. Avoid loans, but don't let them STOP you from getting the education.

Going to college - in my view - was a way to protect myself from realities of daily life while I could immerse myself in topics that I felt drawn to. It's the only time in your life that you really make that sort of time and effort to develop your interests. But it's also dangerous to avoid reality. It took me a long time to get back to it. You're concern about the system shows that you already have a pretty good sense of things. But the protected time, I still think, is important for development. If you can avoid working during school, I'd advise it. Getting high grades on stuff you're excited about is important for feeling you can make a difference.

Or, you can learn by working. But I can't really contribute to that discussion because that wasn't my experience.

Good luck!

There are tons of jobs in the 'helping professions' such as teaching, healthcare, and social work that don't involve working for corporations with negative impacts on society. Also, if you are willing to learn the basics of keeping your own books, many people make a great income as independent contractors who run their own business in carpentry/landscaping/bicycle or car repair/painting. I met a young electrician who took up the trade so that he wouldn't have a boss and could get by on working 4 months of the year.

Some people (I wont mention any names) work off the books. They work for cash and pay no taxes. It's really easy to get a job doing construction this way.

The really clever ones work for themselves. That way, not only don't they pay any taxes, but they don't have to split what they earn with a boss, either. Being a back yard mechanic is a good example of one way to do this.

Either way, it's called "grey market labor," and it beats living heck out of working a straight job.

There are many, many ways to do it. One person who posts here works as a home maker, and also walks dogs on the side. Another works as a gardener. Use your imagination. It’s not rocket science.

It also helps to keep your expenses down. One way to do this is squatting. There are a lot of different ways to squat. Here’s one of them:

You can eat for free out of dumpsters and food banks. Better still, eat vegan. It’s really cheap, it’s fairly healthy, and a lot of it is really, really delicious.

If you live in the country, and like eating meat, poaching is a excellent, time tested way to put food on the table. Even if you live in the city, it is never that far to a deer. The Oakland-Berkeley Hills, for example, are crawling with them. Prudent poachers are said to always bury the gut pile. Or so I hear. Watching out for wild dogs probably wouldn’t hurt, either. They’re up there, too. Don’t let them corner you.

It’s safer (they say) if you use an improvised silencer, because poaching is a *much* lighter bust than a possessing a silencer. If you get busted on the way home with the carcass, you’ll probably only get county time, state time at most. But if they also catch you with a silencer, you’re going to do federal time, and a lot of it, especially these days. If you use an improvised silencer, though, you can ditch it at the crime scene (after wiping it for prints, of course). If you don’t know how to build an improvised silencer, ask this guy:

I’m speaking hypothetically here, of course. I’m certainly not recommending that you actually do any of these things. That would be illegal. I’m just pointing out what some people do. Make of it what you will. What you do when i’m not around is none of my business. Don’t tell me about it. I don’t want to know. Better still, don’t tell anyone. Most people in prison are there because of a snitch. The rest got there by bragging.

Good luck, and always remember, not everything works out, especially immediately. If something is not working out, don’t give up. Try something else. The best strategy is to have three separate, dissimilar and unrelated sources of income, and only need two at any given time. That way, if one of them slacks off for a while, you’re still covered.

Just become a crack dealer. It's much quicker to make money which will free up tons of time for activism.

i aint good at advice, but i think i can give you a few pointers, which COuld be of use.
workin' /studying hard don't work, just work /study consistently and put in the time to develop Your expertise For You & others around you. stay in the field that you are interested in, otherwise manipulative types may use You only for their gain, and probably not yours. vielengluck

My advice - don't go to college unless you are 1000% sure you have figured out a good job path and that you are guaranteed to make serious money when you get out, with the degree you got.

Otherwise, college tends to prolong your naivete, give you a distorted view of the world, decrease your ability in navigating the real world, etc.

First of all, don't sell drugs. The only drug that should be sold is LSD, and that should be a non-profit endevour to make it availlable to anyone who want to try it. If everyone was still tripping on acid, dmt, psilocybin, and mescalin the world would not be in such a mess.

Seccond, don't go to college. Why do you need someone to teach you? DIY! If your parrents want to pay for college, see if you can get them to put that money in your hand. You might have to be really tricky - but trust me, your parrents become a hassle after you leave the house - they never produce positive things for you again, so do try to get the money.

Remember, any time someone teaches you how to do something, they brainwash you. The more you are taught, the more you become a composition of other people - and less yourself. Why else would the government mandate public school, yet hire such sluggishly retarded teachers? The education system makes everyone stupid.

EDUCATE YOURSELF

As far as money goes, that shit is everywhere. Just remember, when it comes down to it, all you have to do is get money in your hand - then it's yours. People give it away left and right. Almost anyone can get paid to do internet porn pics and video. You can make about 1,200 dollars for a movie - all you got to do is have sex 3 times. Opportunities abound, and the best thing you could possibly do at your age is explore. When your my age, you should be ready to leave the country, when your 25, you should come back and start the fucking revolution.

thats what im doing, im 21 - and off to latin america. expect to see me again in a few years with an AK and a cigar. Tu Esta en Los Manos Buenos, America!
