:: APRIL 1ST: NATIONAL MARCH ON WASHINGTON ::

by Vincent Kukua (contact_bamn [at] uclink4.berkeley.edu)
SAVE BROWN V. BOARD OF EDUCATION UPDATE: The Supreme Court has given us a date on the University of Michigan affirmative action cases, Grutter and Gratz v. Bollinger. The date is APRIL 1ST. So open up your schedules and pack your bags. We need everyone to get on the bus and get to Washington D.C. and let your voice be heard for affirmative action.
----------------------------- UPDATE --------------------------------

The affirmative action cases at the University of Michigan are headed for the Federal Supreme Court and we are organizing to get millions of supporters of affirmative action to march onto the steps of the Supreme Court in Washington D.C. on April 1st. That's right folks, we have a firm date for the hearing. Remember April 1st! Grutter v. Bollinger could be our generation's Brown v. Board of education. The political impact that each and everyone of us can have on the educational climate of our public schools and higher education in our country will be far-reaching and historic.

On Martin Luther King Jr. Day, BAMN organized a mass march and rally at U of M in order to bolster support for the cases. It was an overwhelming success. We had at least 1,500-2,000 people come out from all areas of life; black, white, Asian, Latina/o, young, old, etc. We marched around the city of Ann Arbor chanting, holding signs that said "Support Diversity", Defend Affirmative Action", "No War", etc. The crowd was so hyped and the energy was kept as we headed into a mass meeting in the Chemistry building to talk about our continuing efforts to organize our schools and workplaces. Jesse Jackson and Hon. Greg Mathis spoke to the crowd and reinforced our resolve to keep building the new civil rights movement and march on Washington BY ANY MEANS NECESSARY. The auditorium was so packed that we had to open up an overflow room in order to accomodate everyone. We ALL pledged to continue to build the new civil rights movement, NEVER GIVE UP, AND NEVER SELL OUT! I encourage everyone to talk to your friends, family, neighbors, etc., etc., and get them to Wasington D.C. on APRIL 1ST. I guarantee that this will be the defining moment in your life and will change the course of this country for generations to come. See you all in D.C.!!!
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
