SF Black Bloc Tour

by bb
A black bloc call was made for San Francisco's January 18th anti-war demonstration. A mostly anti-capitalist breakaway march resulted in a rather successful black bloc action. Here are some finer points I caught on film.

good job..

nice pic.. nice target and so on

I saw the starbucks ones and I thought, 'was anyone *in* there when this happened?' man, would that have been funny. You'd think the workers there would go look for work elsewhere, or refuse to show up on protest days . . . but starbucks is a zionist business anyway.
by intheUK
nice work!
lets see more in the future (hopefully here too).

Let's bring the war home!
by wheeeeeee
come on people, 5pm on a saturday in downtown SF... there was nobody but protesters and cops around...

besides, the only people that would smash an occupied building are obviously agent provocateurs...

jesus H. Gotama -- how could you willingly put up pictures of the Black Bloc's worst spelling error of the new year? WEAPONS OF MASS DESTRACTION? who the hell is going to take us seriously now?
by Reverend Billy (Revbilly [at] revbilly.com)
They say that they get to be violent and that we can't be. They say that since they are able to hide their violence, keep it in the distance with their graphics and muzak, that...
They say that since they get to bust unions and poison the family farm with Monsanto,
They say that since they make money then they aren't violent.
They tell themselves that since they make money any violence they create is unintentional or necessary.
Wise up. Starbucks gives money directly to the Sharon government.
Starbucks is simply violent and it is up to us to find a way to re-train customers to recognize violence when they are paying for it.
All Starbucks windows should crack and fall.
All Starbucks green sea-goddesses in the windows should grow their nipples back.
All Starbucks should revert to the neighborhood diner that they evicted with their Nasdaq funny money.
All Starbucks should be sold and the 25 million impoverished coffee workers get paid.
Howard Schultz' 800 million should not be enough to repair how many windows are breaking around him.

Short sermon. Sun. 2 PM in NY. Thanks for your work. Amen.

DESTRACTION

I agree that this shit only weakens our cause and makes us laughable. I saw another tag during yesterday's march calling for the <i>revalution</i>.
by Gramarrian
Common Folks!!!! That was outside the citibank building that I saw that tag. REVALUTION ???? But just maybe we have an Anarchist Jamres Joyce in our midst who's composing new words and grammer on the fly.
REVALUTION = REVOLUTION + ANARCHY ? But the walls of citibank are not appropiate places to try out composing new words. But also admittedly, the cops were close, and there ' wasn't the time/place to put a lot of time and effort into compositions.
by Rad Fem
I saw NO mention of your window smashing adventure in the media so one of your main rationales was not achieved. Overall it was just a bunch of high testosterone, unloved, horny men on a rampage. UGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGHGH
by um
"horny men on a rampage"

What makes you think that the people who broke those windows were all men? From the crowd pictures one can see that there were just as many women with face masks as men so....

RAPID CITY ANARCHIST NEWS LETTER!

Hi all. It’s George Steeple, the most dangerous man in Rapid City (according to Harvest Mall Security). I have been chillin’ as usual, working on my new manifesto The Rapid City Anarchist, and building a half pipe in my mom’s driveway. The half pipe is almost complete, so I expect to have a big party conference fairly soon.

The Anarchist Revolution is taking longer than I originally planned. I know that in the first issue of the Rapid City Anarchist I predicted that the revolution would happen sometime before Homecoming (September 28th to be exact). You’re probably saying to yourself. “Holy Shit George, it’s almost Christmas vacation and you’ve on issue three of The Rapid City Anarchist. So when can we expect the Anarchist revolution.”

Well don’t worry. I assure you that the revolution is almost here. How do I know? The social structure is beginning to crumble. If you only look you will see that Anarchy is taking hold of our most sacred institutions, the very instruments of oppression.

Like for instance on Sunday. I was hanging out with Jim Dorfmen (commonly refereed to as the Dorf and Rapid City Anarchist Party Leader). We were just chillin’ mindin’ our own business in the food court at Harvest Mall.

That was when Mike Walchezki (government informant and Harvest Mall Security guard) began to oppress Jim and me. He said to us, “Hey kids, did you use the ketchup packets to write Anarchy on the ass of the giant Santa at the other end of the mall.” Why were we accused of this, you might ask? Of the hundreds of citizens in the mall why should we be singled out? It is obvious that our past political activity has been brought to the attention of the fascist apparatus.

This pig did not have a single shred of proof. We checked carefully to make sure that no one was looking when we wrote Anarchy on Santa, the ultimate instrument of Capitalist oppression. So I say to the security guard, “lick my balls you cock sucking fascist”. What do you think he did? Nothing. Not a damn thing.

Why you ask? Fear!!!! The power of the working class was with us. The people’s discontent would rise up like a wave of unfathomable power to wash away his stupid rent-a-cop fascist structure and the entire food court, even the Wendy’s at the far end. The power is on our side now. This week has been a great week for the Rapid City Anarchist. Several important Anarchist political statements have been made in the past week.

On Tuesday Jim skipped fourth-period gym class. We toilet papered Mike Walchezki’s trailer on Wednesday and on Friday I destroyed three mailboxes on Pine Street. Anarchy is here my faithful comrades in arms. So until the next issue of the newsletter remember to skate hard, fight the Fascists and keep reading the Rapid City Anarchist.

What makes you think that was anybody's rational?
by Susanna
Solidarity also with militant activists!!!!
No matter if it's peaceful or militant - unite is the resistance!!!! We can only win if we fight together with different kinds of actions. It's ok to make militant actions and it is ok to make peaceful actions. RESIST!!! FIGHT NATIONALISM & CAPITALISM, HOMOPHOBIA, RACISM & SEXISM!!!!

oh man.

nice pictures though!

Property destruction is not violence. Property does not feel pain. People feel pain. Animals feel pain.
The environment feels pain.

When I was six I threw a half a brick at a bulldozer window to see if it was saftey glass. Vandalisim got kinda boring..

Grow up. Carry a sign and protest like everyone else or grow some balls. Mix amonium nitrate in to a 5 gallon bucket of warm diesel until it won't go into solution. Add some screws and nails. Top it off with a home made blasting cap and a remote motor to detonate( r/c shop). Enjoy a man's work..

If you feel really peppy carry it in your self during lunch and kill all the zionist supporters enjoying their coffee. You can be a real marytr..

Leave your trust fund to greenpeace..Go for it put corporate america in its place..

You could douse your self with diesel and burn your self in line for a frappachino. You'd get headlines world wide..

Spray paint and kiddy destruction pales in comparison..

(note to ATF this is sarcasam..)

The Sunday Chronicle listed all the vandalism EXCEPT the vandalism of the Chronicle building.

and they said 200 protesters.
Without their "voluntary servitude" the leader would be impotent. As Gandhi points out:

Even the most despotic government cannot stand except for the consent of the governed which consent is often forcibly procured by the despot. Immediately the subject ceases to fear the despotic force, his power is gone (Gandhi, 1980, p.27)

In actual practice, the withdrawal of co-operation takes the form of civil disobedience, strikes, occupations, boycotts, and a general mass non-compliance with the wishes of the oppressor. [Gene Sharp (1973) has documented over 200 successful techniques of nonviolent resistance.] In the great Indian strike or hartel of 1930 against the Salt Laws, for example, virtually the entire subcontinent was shut down and British rule paralyzed (Bondurant, 1958).

i was there i came from san diego, there was no media but it was truly one of the most wonderful things i have ever seen. the destruction of all that oppresses us, starbucks, immigration, citibank, etrade
i am proud to say i stood up for the punks who took over the streets on jan 18, 2003 in the name of antiwar and anti corporations

by Pacifist
Honestly, when I heard about this rampage on Saturday night from a friend who happened to see it as she was walking back to BART from the ANSWER rally, I really was sad. I mean, the emotion of sadness actually swept over me for a few hours.

I thought to myself, "here we go, the day would have been almost perfect, but maybe its the end of the peace movement already." I mean, I was out there with many of my friends that day - we came as a group of almost 30 - and we were all out there because we are opposed to violence in all its forms, and we see war as being the utmost form of violence.

But I have to admit. I've been struggling the past few days, reading post after post on indymedia, and though I still feel I could NEVER do anything like this myself, I have to say, the arguments for these actions are well reasoned, intelligent, and simply must be considered.

I just thought the anarchists that have had so much attention since Seattle were a bunch of punks, with too much teenage angst out for a good time.

One of the tenants of my philosophy is that people should always struggle not to dehumanize others. I think it is what allows violence to be possible. But I was talking to a buddy at work yesterday about what happened, and he said, "hey graham, have you ever TRIED to look at it from the other side? I mean, don't you think you're dehumanizing THEM by not even trying to listen to their viewpoint? you're always talking about that right?"

This really got me thinking. My buddy's not even the political type at all. Usually I can tell that he just gets sick of listening to me every day when i come into work saying, "you won't believe what they're doing now!" (I just can't help myself sometimes) But he's right. He may have helped me make one of the biggest changes in my politics in my life.

I guess sometimes its good just to step back and reevaulate things. Sometimes its so easy to get swept up in your own thinking - especially when you're in the minority - that you don't have a chance to do this. Its just really hard. You get used to defending yourself against rightwingers all the time and that turns into getting used to defending yourself endlessly against anyone you're arguing with.

So after Wayne finished putting me in check, a few hours later, a few muslim guys came to the counter to order a couple of coffee. I took their order, and when I was filling up their cups I overheard a piece of their conversation. One of them was saying to the other "You wouldn't believe it!!! I swear, I was walking by there last night and the whole front of the building was trashed!! The windows were broken, there was spray paint on the walls, i can't remember exactly what it said...have you heard anything about this? Someone must've done it during that big march yesterday. Yusuf is gonna love it when he hears about this!"

anyway, that just topped it off. I mean, these guys were really excited about this. Hell, I went to a few of those protests down there the other week, but I never really thought of what it must be like to feel like you're at risk of being detained.

I don't think these actions alone will have any real affect of the INS process or on government policy, but I just can't write them off anymore.

I guess different people just have different ways of doing things. If we can stick together on this we'll be stronger.

PEACE :-)
by Ross
A broken window that probably costs less than $400 to fix in a store owned by a corporation with billions of dollars in assets. Is that going to make a difference? Is that going to change anyone's mind who doesn't already hate the place?

It'd be one thing if a farmer from Dixon got up one morning and drove his tractor into town and through the front entry of the store. Then we might have at least a mild stirring of public awareness. But a broken window and some really bad, tiny patches of graffiti? I don't think this caused more than a yawn in anyone's day.

Quit romancing yourselves, quit dramatizing some half-rate BS (quit jacking yourselves off). Do something that changes someone's mind or at least makes them think. This doesn't even make anyone angry. Sure, violence is an option.. but here it shows a remarkable lack of creativity. We are humans, and thankgod, we are gifted with more than simple, mundane means of expression.

Violence can be appropriate, it can be beautiful.. you guys make it cheap and sleazy. It's so obvious to everyone that it's your own mental and emotional issues that are guiding your actions, not some coherent philosophical reasoning.
Back in the day , people used to break things that mattered, and not a bunch of symbols.

What changed?

>Earlier, someone wrote, "Starbucks is a zionist business anyway." Huh? What the hell does that even mean? They're a mega-conglomerate that destroys local businesses and culture, sues prison labor, underpays their staff, and uses minimal free-trade coffee, but what does calling them "zionist" mean? Is debate over Palestine and Israel at such a low point that the word "zionist" has become a meaningless insult ripped from its context?
by jj
what are you doing thats more millitant than the black bloc?
instead of arguing that the black bloc is a waste of time, why dont you organize something that is not a waste of time, and that will stop the war instead of breaking a few windows.
untill you do that, you should keep quiet. or better yet, join in the bloc.
a black bloc might not be enough, but what are you doing instead?
by ShutEmDown
When the bombs start falling and the invasion begins, there should be a mass walkout-not just from classrooms at schools and universities but from EVERYWHERE!
by American
When the bombs start falling there will be a massive walkout - from the Iraqi army. Go USA!!!
by Jamie Busch
AMEN! Go USA. You pathetic and infantile punks who think that breaking a few windows at a Starbucks is some kind of profound political statement are beneath contempt. You don't deserve to live in a free society. I wish you would get on a boat, and trade places with some deserving Iraqi who has never hurt anyone, and would give ANYTHING to live in this country. Then he or she would be free from the fear of rape, torture, and murder from the fanatical piece of human filth that you all marched to support. Shame on all of you forever.
by Radian
I'm sure these guys are back to swatting mailboxes with bats and video taping themselves getting the dog stoned.
by Uwe
The INS is sending back people who fled Iraq and Pakistan and a dozen other middle Eastern countries, very frequently who have established families and lives over here, but they often have one piece of paper out of order or there is some technicality, so they are send back to Pakistan or Iraq forever where they could be hurt by the dictator while their kids stay here w/o a father.
Maybe you should go trade places with them if you love the integrity of the INS's front window so much.
by class revolution
to brainiacs, smashing stuff is a sign of some blah blah blah and using that theory, it turns people off.

all normal people and realpolitik people (like bush and company) understand that smashing stuff ups the ante a little bit, shows more conviction, and more raw unpredictability which would stretch the impact of the protest beyond the intentions of the politicians who are supposed to be running the anti-war dissent in this country. if you want to talk tactics, lets talk tactics!
by charles
I wonder how your gonna get a walk out when most of you do not have a job and most are not US Citizens you protesters that are americans show your really communist supporters after all the group answer is 100% communist funded and backed so we normal ameriacans know you are a joke adn how many out of 30k could even vote take out the kids and non americans bet only 500 out of 30k are even legal americans citizens JOKE JOKE JOKE JOKE do us all a favor go be a human shield for Saddam and save us the trouble of putting in jail for supproting terrorist groups that want to kill americans

Pay taxes this April 15.

Everyone that participated in this distruction is no better than those we fight against. I'm part of the anti-globalization movement and find your tactics to be disgusting and an insult to the progress we're working for. I hope everyone responsible for this is caught, punished, and hopefully not linked to the work other non-violent people are doing.
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
