Alert! Tree Sitters Under Assault 1/16

Today, Thursday Jan. 16, Pacific Lumber and Humboldt law enforcement began moving in on tree-sits on PL land in Humboldt county. It is unclear at this writing how far they will go to try to remove tree-sits from their property, but people have felt recently that PL might soon try to remove the tree sits.
On Thursday, PL's "climber Eric" dismantled a tree-sit in PL's Demonstration Forest near the Avenue of the Giants, taking down sitter Sequoia, and showed up in Freshwater, where there have been many tree-sits, not dipping below about a dozen the last couple
months. Freshwater is also the area where Remedy has been in an old growth redwood for 10 months, along with Wren who has been in a nearby tree for 8 months. The Freshwater watershed has been under
assault by PL logging, where the Headwaters Deal Habitat Conservation Plan allows 500 acres to be clear cut annually.
Remedy told us by cell phone that law enforcement and PL climbers, climbing gear in tow, arrived at a tree-sit on Kneeland Rd., about 5 miles from her tree, surveyed the scene, but did not attempt to climb
the tree and extract the sitter.
PL is carrying out aggressive logging in key areas, including occupied habitat of the endangered marbled murrelet. Their logging has also been causing slides and flooding, with tremendous impact on local residents and on salmon and steelhead fisheries.
There have been on-going tree-sits in the Demonstration Forest, Gypsy Mountain, where David Gypsy Chain was killed in 1998 by an angry logger, in a stand of old growth in Grizzly Creek, in the Mattole watershed, and in Freshwater.
PL is coming under fire with the release of a scientific report making the correlation between their accelerated logging and devastating water quality problems such as the flooding and mud slides befalling neighbors downstream from PL logging sites, degradation of drinking water supplies and loss of agricultural crops. The recommendation to scaling back the cut coming in that scientific report and the fact that the case challenging the Sustained Yield Plan of the Headwaters Deal may have caused PL to
accelerate their cutting in the last of their available old growth, which happens to be above already impaired water courses and in endangered species habitat.
Those facts have made the tree sits all the more urgent.
Support is needed! Call the two numbers below to find out how you can help.
Areas of tree-sits are as follows
*Demonstration Forest, near the Pepperwood exit off 101, in the Avenue of the Giants
*Freshwater watershed, which is east of the north end of Eureka
*Gypsy Mountain and Grizzly Creek areas are out highway 36, east off 101 near Fortuna and south of Eureka Check with BACH office and North Coast Earth First! before going up to offer support.

What on earth are you doing tree sitting, anyway. Come on down out of there. Now get a life.
Geeez. some people never learned to behave.
Geeez. some people never learned to behave.
PULP, your comments are tough to decipher. What is your point? Cutting down 12,000 yr old trees is a bad behavior. Please stop it and the twee sitters will probably go away.
12,000 years old? Are people cutting down the Petrified Forest? If so, they should stop now.
Ignorance is amazing
Ignorance is amazing
Ignorance is letting someone else poison your ground water, or cause mudslides into your neighbor's homes or delighting in the destruction of ancient forests that don't exist anywhere else on earth. Ignorance is watching these practices take place and convincing yourself that it doesn't matter, that the pockets of Charles Hurwitz are more important than your own backyard. How sad!
prior posting mistakenly stated 12,000 yr old trees and it was supposed to be 1,200 yr old trees. duh, posion oakie, we know your just a tech who works for pl. when you get your rpf, let's debate, until then....
Am I to assume every mistake is a typing error?
I don't correct spelling, but adding 10,000 years to the life of a tree is a bit much. Would you have posted a correction if I hadn't called you on it? Not trying to nit pick, but would you allow such a misstatement from those you disaggree with?
And would an RPF have better knowledge of the age of trees? There is nothing to argue, you made a mistake.
Thanks for the correction.

I don't want to hear the complaints of tree-huggers regarding mudslides.
The worst mudslides in centuries are threatening right now in all the areas of the Western US that were recently devastated by wildfire. What caused the uncontrollable wildfires, you ask? The no-access no-logging no undergrowth-thinning policies of every major environmental group and every tree-hugger allowed massive uncontrolled undergrowth. As a DIRECT RESULT, the wildfires were completely out of control for months on end, destroying millions of acres of forests and watershed. The mudslides that will surely follow during the coming months of El-Nino inspired rainstorms and typhoons will be a DIRECT RESULT OF THESE MISGUIDED POLICIES.
These mudslides will dwarf any of those referred to here in earlier posts.
You want to point fingers for muddy water supplies and destructive mudslides? Time to look in the mirror.

wilbur,
the mudlsides that are referred to here are not from the naturally occurring western wildfires. they are from excessive logging the maxxam is forcing pl to do. yes, pl is cutting three times the rate prior to the hostile hurwitz takeover. the science says, direct correlation in the five watershed between the excessive logging and the destruction of these watersheds.
as for the industries fucked up influence on the public lands and the limited wildfires, that really is a debate for another thread. bushy baby's forest smokescreen is just a ploy to take the most fire resistant trees to the lumber mill. it's not about thinning around structures and reducing the risk to populated areas, it's about greed.

It's disheartening reading the petty quips of some of the folks posting here. “Get down from the trees? Get a life?” Are there really people out there who question the relationship between clear cutting and erosion? Visit any hillside that has been overcut. Are we also questioning the wisdom of cutting down the last 3-5% of California's ancient trees. If you really want the money that these last great forests will provide please be honest and state it. Yes they will fetch lots of money. If you would like to justify cutting old-growth and creating clearcuts with the idea that it's responsible forest stewardship, please realize that you run the risk of sounding both greedy and ignorant.

ignorance is working for these companies, such as columbia helicopter, which logs Humboldt's giant redwoods for pacific lumber, and also logs tropical rainforests in several third world countries. SHAME on these parasites who are destroying life on this earth so they can pay the mortgages on their oversized pickup trucks.
So I get up this morning and its my day off, and as soon as I roll out of bed my wife starts badgering me about mowing the lawn. Well , I figure i'd better get it out of the way if I am to have any peace the rest of the day. So I pull the lawn mower out to the back yard and out of the corner of my eye I see some skinny ,long haired guy sitting right in the middle of our lemon tree.I ask the guy what the heck he thinks he's doing and he starts going off about the destruction of the enviorment, and how trees have rights too and a bunch of other stuff. Well I tell the guy he's gatta come down cause my kids want me to make lemonade this afternoon but he wont budge,so I walk back to the garage to get my alvacado picker to knock him down with but when I got back the little prick had climbed down and jumped the fence.
Oh, those wacky young people, confusing your lemon tree with a 500 year old redwood. lol. Silly tree sitters. What are they thinking? You're right. A tree is a tree. Let's cut them down.
I hope he got one from sitting in the tree.
Dear Heretic, I dont know if the little runt got a sour rear end from sitting in our lemon tree , but I do know he sure busted the living daylights out of his legs when he jumped our fence. Great, now thats one more thing my wife can hound me about, "clean the blood off the fence." Oh well I still love her dearly.
