Telegraph Ave: No Smoking, Yes Shopping

by berkeley copwatch news
... you know the government doesnt give a shit about smoking. What they want is to impose Giuliani-style quality of life laws which drive out the poor and replace them with Starbucks-ready shoppers. Below is a report seen on Copwatch mailing list.
i wanted to let you know that a cop came into my work today (i work on telegraph on the same block as Cody's and Moe's) and gave us this little sign that he was passing out. they're just simple signs that say no smoking w/in 20 ft of a doorway, but the way he explained their purpose to my co-worker was so that "those people who hang out with dogs and stuff and keep people from shopping, sometimes they smoke and ..."

something to the effect of 'we just cant have that' and "keep people from shopping" is a direct quote. i dunno i just pass it on because its just a simple no smoking law but it seems like at least this cop was looking at it as a way to target the street folks and maybe even folks like russ and doug minkler who have their stands outside doorways, you know? so yeah i wanted to pass it on.
