Huwaida Arraf and Adam Shapiro: Life Under Israeli Occupation: International Solidarity Movement Activists Report Back
New College, 766 Valencia Street, San Francisco
Live Webcast: http://www.newcollege.edu/cesa
Huwaida Arraf and Adam Shapiro are members of The International Solidarity Movement (ISM) that began peacefully and creatively intervening on behalf of Palestinian human rights last year, just as Israel stepped up its military offensive in the Occupied Palestinian Territories. Since that time the ISM has joined campaigns to accompany Palestinians living under military curfews, harvesting crops, and resisting land grabs and home destruction by Israeli settlers and occupation authorities. Shapiro, spent a day in Palestinian President Yassar Arafat’s Presidential Compound in Ramallah while it was besieged by the Israeli Army in the Spring or 2003.
Arraf and Shapiro will offer reflections on the first year of ISM's work and a report back from Arraf’s recent trip to Palestine, focused on the enormous wall currently being built by Israel in the occupied territories. They will also give updates on upcoming ISM campaigns and answer questions about their efforts and what is required for participation in upcoming peace activities including Freedom Summer (in xxx). Finally they will comment on the Bush plans for War against Iraq, the development of a nonviolent resistance movement in Palestine, and what Americans can do to promote peace and justice in the Middle East. Sponsored by Global Exchange, International Solidarity Movement and New College. Contact Rula Kalafawi, rula [at] globalexchange.org, 415-255-7296

1) The date given for Huwaida Arraf and Adam Shapiro at New College (Mon Jan 3) is obviously wrong. The correct date is Monday, January 6.
2) Huwaida and Adam will also be speaking in Berkeley on Sunday, January 5 at 3 pm at:
Unitarian Fellowship Hall
1924 CEDAR ST. at Bonita (between Shattuck & MLK)
0.6 miles north of Berkeley BART.
Buses: 15, 43, 7 or 9 to Cedar.
Note: This post is not actually by a member of ISM, but the information, including contact info, is mostly taken from their leaflet, with additional location information added by Aaron <redguy22 [at] aarons.fastmail.fm>.

very handsome couple!
Listen now:
Here's an mp3 recording of the event. I will make a quick news story on it and provide some feedback. But I wanted to toss this on to the SF Indymedia server right away -- and to be able to link to the file later.
The file was recorded off the webstreaming program. The audio is very low quality (my recording settings were set above the quality of the stream -- that's just the way it was streamed, sorry)

Scratch what I said yesterday. I'm not going to write-up a new story. The above pretty much covers it.
I do have a suggestion for the folks at New College. I think your speaker program is very cool. Thank you for it. But you know, the web casting isn't as nifty as you might think. When I was on it yesterday, there were only two other people listening. The quality of the audio was horrible, as you can hear from the recording I made and attached above. Wouldn't it be just as easy to record any given program, make an mp3, and upload it as a news file? I'd think there would be even less technical issues with that versus streaming. Recording and uploading would have the advantage of archivability and accessibility at any time. A delay of a day or whatever isn't a big deal. Again, only 3 people were listening to that web stream, but far more people would surely hear the program if it was consistently uploaded as an mp3.
Also, you need to figure out a better way to get consistent audio volume for speakers and those that ask questions.
Again, thanks for the program. What you're doing is fantastic. Additional forums for discussion is always a good thing.

What a nice picture of a Jew hater and a self-hating Jew. One day their future kids will blow up their Jewish grandparents and relatives after learning the terrorists ways from mommy and daddy. I'm sure Adam Nazi Jew will be so proud!
Media Benjamin and her pro-capitalist enterprise, Global Commodity Exchange Value, should have NO part in a truly radical anti-war, anti-capitalist movement. And just selling more Silicon Valley technology to create this "technological global village" is utter bullshit. Down with self-appointed "leaders" and boycott the pacifist crap they preach from on high. In the Class War they are capital's apologists and will be righteous targets of the working classes' hatred of all petit bourgeois merchants.
