SF: Call Supes To Demand No Muni Fare Hike

by San Francisco Voter
Call all 11 San Francisco Supervisors today to demand no Muni fare hike. The Battle of the Budget begins now and the Board of Supervisors makes the final decision on the budget. Muni should be free as fares cannot pay for Muni and fares are by definition a regressive tax, that is, they are anti-workingclass.

You can find the names, phone numbers and E-mail addresses of all 11 supervisors at:
http://www.sfgov.org/bdsupvrs/roster.htm

The US mail address for all of them is City Hall, 1 Dr. Carlton Goodlett Place, San Francisco, CA 94102

All 11 supervisors make decisions about all of our districts and thus, they all represent the entire city. They all have voice mail so you can call them at any time and leave a message which can simply be: Vote No on ANY Muni fare hike.

This is urgent as the Metropolitan Transportation Agency takes up the issue on January 7. That Agency consists of Willie Brown appointees but the final decision rests with the Board of Supervisors. You must make your voice heard now. If you have complaints about Muni's service, tell all 11 supervisors what your complaints are. The service has not improved; San Francisco has simply lost population due to loss of jobs. The "rush hour" buses and trains are often packed, and service during regular hours beyond the Northeast business area (east of Van Ness, north of Market) needs improvement. Be specific on your grievances.

I know you, and I, are worried about the international situation, as we should be. We will all be at the peace march on January 18 and we are all making our contributions with money, labor and/or time as we can to make our peace march the biggest and best ever. That does not change the fact that all politics are local. That simply means we can make the biggest difference in changing this society from a war economy to a peace economy right here at home, starting with all local budget battles. These wars are all about maximizing profits, making the rich, richer, at the expense of the workingclass.

The budget can and should be balanced by cutting the police department budget, reassessing commercial real estate to its true market value with no exception for the Friends of Willie [Brown], making the Financial District a transit tax district to tax the profits of the large corporations, and firing all of Willie Brown's Special Assistants, also known as his election fraud team.
