US Sergeant Learns Afghan Lessons

by US WAR LOSSES WATCH
Do American troops really understand what WAR means? Do they understand that when they murder and destroy the lives of innocent people, that blood does not wash off? U.S. SOLDIERS HAVE A CHOICE. LEAVE THE MILITARY NOW, OVERTHROW YOUR MURDEROUS BOSSES.
"The most challenging part of the exercise ... for me would be this environment. It's my first time working out in a desert and if you are not physically fit basically, it's really hard."
- Sgt. Steven Checo, Sept 29, 2002, about exercises in Afghanistan

Then, five days before Christmas:
Attackers struck U.S. forces near Afghanistan's mountainous border with Pakistan in two separate assaults. An 82nd Airborne Division paratrooper died in a gunbattle in the eastern town of Shkhin. The Pentagon identified the paratrooper as Sgt. Steven Checo, 22, from New York City.

The lesson for Steven? An inconvenient climate is NOT the most challenging part of war. This is not a fucking vacation. It is you going half way across the world to murder people you don't even understand. And guess what? It will be challenging because they are going to try and fucking kill you.

How many more families will lose their sons and daughters right before Christmas or a birthday so that George Bush and dipshit Dick Cheney can be even more filthy rich?

Learn your lessons before its too late.

too bad some of them find out too late.
by Radian
I got a lesson for you, you can choke on it.

Those guys know why they are there and volunteered more than once to get there. Paratropers have to volunteer for the army and then volunteer to be paratroopers.

Innocence is relative. Guess the people in new york were innocent. People die in war. We wouldn't be blowing up innocent goat farmers if they took care of the Taliban on their own.

Here is a hint. The airborne isn't going to mutiny and the US isn't going to quit over a a few casualties.
by ..........
"Innocence is relative. Guess the people in new york were innocent."

Yeah, typical conservative opinion. "oh, they died, so what? God's mad at America so he made it happen. They got what America deserves, because of all the homosexuals or something." What do they call that now, moral simpletonism .. er, moral clarity ... or something, I forget, you guys have so many buzzwords now.

I saw a program at a middle school on channel one. For one half hour these children were subjected to military enlistment commercials, soft drink commercials , and ‘’’’’’’news’’’’’’.
One particular item was an on the spot report
by a young teenage girl interviewing a friendly young solder about exploding old
discovered soviet munitions. The viewer
was allowed the thrill of watching a far off
shot of the detonation. It was freezing cold by the look of it. Yes quite a challenge. Make sure you bundle up junior before he
goes off to the cold.
by history buff
We've heard that before. Fifty eight thousand dead later, the US quit. How many dead it will take this time merely remains to be seen.
by Sheepdog
To history buff:
About the casualties on our side that result
from this current criminal scheme’s conclusion, if this ever indeed happens.
Do you mean before, after or both?
The survival rates of gulf war (1) vets aren’t

Vietnam was a proxy war with the soviets. The afgans and iraqis have no benefactor. By the way we killed hundreds of thousands of nva, and vietcong. some estimates surpass a million. This is not a political war.

I am by no means conservative but do not follow the line of the poor inncoent goat farmers and iraqi children..

Those iraqis sure put a hurt on us last time 200 coalition kia vs 60 - 100k. Technology works..

The defense is to eliminate those who terrorize. If the IDF completley displaced everyone in the west bank and enforced a DMZ type border I think suicide bombings would end. Unlikley but demonstrates the fact that a destroyed enemy can not strike. The palestinians only survive on Israel's restraint.

by Sheepdog
Well now if we haven’t done it yet we sure have the welcome mat out now for reprisals.
But hey that’s what the CIA is so damn good
at. Providing business opportunities for arms and oil or anything else these elite roach droppings want at our expense. They are salivating at the prospect of a terror attack, believe it. It could be just as successful as their last one.
We should create our own list of collaborators for future reference. We know they do. It’s only fair now that we see the only hope for the world starting in places like Argentina, Brazil Venezuela and Chapias. We should gather courage as we gather knowledge and numbers. The truth is so unavoidable about how we have been assaulted while the government looked the other way at the least through total incompetence or at the worst, complicity, that more of the people are waking up. It doesn’t take much.
by ..........
Well, Vietnam was actually one of the few post-WW2 American wars that wasn't proxy ... American troops actually participated in a major way in that. Proxy war usually refers to when they arm terrorist groups like the Contras to fight and die for them instead. For the Soviets, I guess, it was a proxy war.
by Radian
Iraq and Afganastan have no superpower feeding them state of the art weapons and intelligence. The islamic extremists are parasites who operate from shithole nations with ignorant and poor populations. The funding for these people is how this war will be one. kill the source of funding and these people will not be effective.
by Pissed-Off Veteran
I'm sorry, *only* 200 KIA?

Tell that to the fucking families of those 200 people, at least one of whom was a friend of mine.

Fuck the US Military. They dont give a shit about anything besides MONEY.

And for those of you armchair hawks who say one life lost is not important, I hope you burn in hell.
by ..........
So, you can pound on defenceless, desperate countries. WOW. Glory and honour, and all that garbage, while you bomb families from the safety of a cockpit fifty thousand feet up.

>u.s. soldiers are lied to by their superior officers.
too bad some of them find out too late.

Unconvincing. You must gain knowledge before you speak, otherwise it just looks silly.

Again, this fool attacked positions the writer (Radian) never took. Is this the best and brightest you have to offer?

>We've heard that before. Fifty eight thousand dead later, the US quit. How many dead it will take this time merely remains to be seen.

Again, unconvincing. Another opinion by a fool.

>There is no defense against terrorism, none, zero, nada zilch.

This individual must wear the top jesters hat. Since there is "no defense against terrorism", I suppose we better button down the hatches. One alternative that has been put forward by some on our planet would be to give in to their demands in exchange for them not attacking us anymore. The only thing that would tell the terrorists is that blackmail works, so that hardly protects us. Others propose that a country as rich as America should freely share its wealth with the rest of the world it would build a foundation upon which peace would reign. The notion that if everyone is even, if all people worldwide were receiving the things of life they needed, if all classes of people and all borders of countries were to disappear, then there's no threat, and by virtue of that, with the desire to have dominion over others eliminated, things such as war and terrorism would not be necessary. Those who hold this viewpoint are those whose life desires are best described as vanity of vanities, a striving after the wind. Some individual or group of individuals would rise to seize power at some point. One might say "We won't let them", but this is the thoughts of a complete imbecile at best.

>The defense is to eliminate those who terrorize.

This works. At some point, those who terrorize will come to understand that their methods will not attain the results they desire and they will abandon those methods. Will they turn to something else then? Certainly they will. And that new method they use to try to and attain the results they desire will in turn need to be defeated.
by Radian
I never said "only" or devalued anyone's loss of life.

My point was the massive superiority of the US millitary to that fielded by iraq.

If you don't mind me asking what unit were you attached to and your dates of service? Feel free not to answer..

As for 50k feet who cares, I could give a shit if we bombed the fuckers from space. We are quite capable of killing their soldiers with grenades, and directed fire. they are just as dead, what is your point? Why expose personell if you can kill with reduced risk?
by Sheepdog
Why expose personell if you can
kill with reduced risk?
Killing is serious business and so is dying.
Maybe we should find out who did the crime
for real, since the story we have had attempts to have shoved up our but doesn’t
wash. You might be going after the wrong criminals in the wrong country. Or does your entry oath ( as I vaguely remember it) still mean something?
"I DO SOLEMNLY SWEAR (OR AFFIRM) THAT I WILL SUPPORT AND
DEFEND THE CONSTITUTION OF THE UNITED STATES AGAINST ALL
ENEMIES, FOREIGN AND DOMESTIC; THAT I WILL BEAR TRUE FAITH
AND ALLEGIANCE TO THE SAME; AND THAT I WILL OBEY THE ORDERS
OF THE PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES AND THE ORDERS OF THE
OFFICERS APPOINTED OVER ME, ACCORDING TO REGULATIONS AND
THE UNIFORM CODE OF MILITARY JUSTICE. SO HELP ME GOD."
***Just for thought since the current resident wasn’t elected. I’d say that we
have a criminal in the white house, not a
legally elected president. Why kill or die for the likes of these?
by Sheepdog
A REAL INVESTIGATION NOW!
I also believe complicity and corruption
that would be exposed, would bring the light of outrage upon the real criminals who are
now feasting on their kill. It ain’t the
Muslims, that’s for sure. More of us are finding out. Times always look the darkest before the real strength of the people is
awakened by the undeniable truth.
All the TV and other trained attack poodles
of our mutual adversaries cannot stop the truth.
by idiot
"I could give a shit if we bombed the fuckers from space."

the beautiful thing about that statement is, they couldn't give a shit either - and a LOT more than you don't, probably in ways you've never imagined.

That's the beauty of it.

Godamnit! I don’t want another cent of my taxes spent to kill torture or maim anyone.
I can’t stand the thought of another child
or adult being wasted or twisted by the
horror we so casually deal out to the rest of the world.
We are collecting a mountain
of hate against us for the benefit of a few
sociopaths who always need more than
they have already. And they never feel the
shame or pain they cause in their compulsion
for greed.
by Radian
Don't pay your taxes. Vote green party. Run for office.

Do you think we would be bombing the "innocent goat farmers" if their guests had not chose to fly civilian aircraft into civilian targets. I disagree with you but I can't quite justify blowing myself up to kill you. I guess we deserve it though...What should we do bend over and spread our butt cheeks like we were french?

Personally I think bombing is less effective than killing their benefactors. like all war this is about money and power, allah is a snow job for the ignant cannon fodder.

This obscene waste of our future because a few criminals want more than they have already; when they have so much it makes them as marauding elephants, ripping and
smashing to obtain what ever they want.
They don’t care about the grief and misery or the
terror and torture their insane lust for more, ever
more has caused.
They use our best for their whim and discard it after
its use has passed. Look around at all the vets on the
street, without dignity or respect from a country
that ceased to care about these victims of greed.
I had friends who died over ‘there’ and I had friends

I took the GI bill and school, many others took the

Honor is fighting a just and moral fight regardless of the odds. Not whether you are on the winning side whatever the hell that is. I don’t think we have been
on the winning side for a long blood stained walk
down this road. And it will be our children who will
pay for the hate and reprisals we are sowing along
the way.

I Knew Steven Checo and, I know he joined the service to try and have a better future. Our men and women risk their lives in order to save others, but what is the country giving back to those families who, at some point has lost a loved one. Money will never cure the pain and thought of losing that special someone.
by Julio Plasencia
Attention to all of you: I never met Steven Checo, but he was my brother's in law's brother. Please read the following expression I personally wrote for him and placed next to his pictures at his funeral.

I never met you and never spoke to you, but I’ve heard a lot of things about you. I remember the pride your brother held in his hands every time he showed someone your picture dressed as a soldier, which he always kept in the front page of his wallet. “That’s my brother, and he is in the army” With all the pride anyone can put in any statement.

Now the pride becomes a memory, an unforgettable reminder of all the good times that brought life it self together. A memory of those days when the sky was always blue and there were hopes of moving on, but only of moving on. Now is the time to look back and relive those moments that will always be there, not just hanging on the wall, but burned deep inside; in every thought and in every step.

The question is Why….?. I know there’s an end to every story. I know this is not the first nor the last story that ends in its first chapter. But, is it really necessary? Must we burn our skin in order to achieve happiness?

I always wanted to meet you, but you were never home. Allow me to introduce my self: I am one of those who saw your picture, one of those many times your brother exposed it to express his pride. I was a witness of the specific moment when there was an “I miss you” hidden among the words of a few sentences. I am now a witness of the memory that can never be destroyed.

I will remember you, as if I had actually met you, because I met your dreams and your desire to move on. Because I have a reason to believe that there’s more than just a dream to dream about. There’s the hope to move on.

Rest in peace, although peace is what you died for.

Learn your lessons before its too late.

What the hell does that mean, we have learned the important lesson; The Arab world can't fight for shit. Yes the M1 is a much better tank and out ranges the T-72, but still the casualties are too lopsided to claim solely on technology. Lets be honest, Arabs can't fight a modern war against a western nation, and they lack the equipment, training and leadership, sort of like the Italians in WW2. In 1991 we lost 200 causalities (for 100K plus), most of which were friendly fire victims, 32 casualties (for around 10-30k, sorry we used more “daisy cutter” bombs that don’t leave bodies to count) overrunning Afghanistan, most of which were accidents or friendly fire incidents.
The Arab world is like that really pathetic bully in high school tries to intimidate other people, yet any time someone fights back he gets his ass kicked. You know it is morally wrong yet you can't help laugh at them. Go away Arab, you not scaring anyone, the only reason you are still around is because of our mercy not your military prowess. I remember a friend went to one of the anti-war rallies to stage his own anti-anti-war rally. Apparently some Arabs, (7-10, he knew they were Arabs because they were wearing pick nick clothes on their heads) most likely students of visas from Palestine tried to intimidate him and another guy from exercising their right to peacefully protest. (According to them since Arabs don’t have freedom thus nobody should) however even with a 4 to 1 advantage they stilled showed their true nature and they retreated. He wasn't even armed with the latest weaponry not to different from their fellow brothers on the front line. So who the heck do you think you are scaring?
by Catspit
Each year in the United States more than 40,000 men, women, and children die in traffic deaths. Over 5,000 of that number are children. Many, many more are permanently scarred or maimed. The United States also has close to the world's highest crime rates for armed robbery, rape, murder, and murder with handguns.

It is sickening how we wring our hands over the death of a soldier in a foreign land, but are apathetic while we murder ourselves. Woe be it to an outsider who treads on us. It is okay if you beat up your neighbor, but we had better not see any outsiders doing the same. Sick...

Unless we can learn to pay more attention to our own affairs and provide consistant and even enforcement of the laws that we have made, our country will be no role model to the rest of the world. Other will continue to jeer at us, shoot at us, or worse.

by WhizWart
Geez, you are ass backwards. The Sgt. had it right. Shooting at someone is relativly easy compared to marching your ass across a hot, rocky, mountainous desert by day and then freezing in it at night. Live near Death Valley? Try walking across it at high noon in July, then when night falls, walk back the way you came. You'll be lucky if you don't have a heart attack or dehydrate.

It is this simple:

The bin Ladens, Quadafis, Sadam Husseins, Hitlers, Idi Amins, and Ayatollahs of the world exercise terror to the fullest extent they are capable, for whatever their reasons. They do not distinguish between the truly guilty and innocents. They are completely unconcerned with who they make suffer. They cannot be negotiated with; they do not compromise; appeasement does not work with them; reasoning with them, even by applying their own logic does not work; they do not care about their own people. They cannot be bought; they cannot be talked to. Whatever their goal may be, they are tunnel-visioned toward it. Now, all you people out there that live here in the US, who hate this country so badly (you know - the country that gives you the right to openly hate it), may see the US as guilty and deserving of terrorist punishment. But do you actually want to see these poor, misunderstood terrorists come over here and wreck this place - even if you think we deserve it? It is simple: we may not ever be able to beat terrorist attacks against us, but we cannot just stand by and do nothing. And since giving love a chance just doesn't work with these morons, we are going to have to physically, violently, actually, slap them off the map. Do you think that just because you are sympathetic to bin Laden, the Taliban, or al Qaida against the US that you are protected from these jackasses? We are just going to have to kill them to stop them. Period. It means going to war. I don't like it any more than anybody else does, but there is no such thing as diplomacy with these idiots. These chicken bastards hide behind women and children. We cannot fight their war with tweezers, so, unfortunately, some women, children, and seniors - true innocents - are going to get hurt. We should regret it, but not bear any guilt for this. It is they who are bringing this on their own people - not us. Those middle-eastern countries have been settled for ten thousand years, and they still can't get it right. They still can't feed their people, have contributed absolutely nothing to bettering themselves or mankind, they have benefitted from every scrap of what little technology they do possess without having earned it, and they still let themselves fall prey to cannibal dictators. Their people need to get off their rear ends and get their act together. They're lucky the US can be suckered into helping them. But don't worry too much about their long-term welfare. Just remember that if, on December 8, 1941, the day after Pearl Harbor, you had stood out on any street corner and announced that within five years we would be kissing up to and rebuilding the country of the treacherous dogs who had just bombed us the day before, you would have been shot where you stood. Nobody would have believed it. Now picture somebody standing on a street corner in NY City on September 12, predicting that one day we will be best buds with Iraq, and that we will soon be buying ugly little stinking cars from the Taliban Motor Corp. Long term, those people we should now be beating up will be our partners in business. Don't worry - they will make out just fine.

PEOPLE FROM NEW YORK ARE NOT THE ONLY ONES WHO HAVE LOVED ONES IN THIS WORLD. IF YOUR LOVED ONES COME HERE TO KILL OUR LOVED ONES, WHAT DO YOU EXPECT? OR DO YOU TAKE LIFE SO LIGHTLY THAT ONLY WHEN YOUR FAMILY IS KILLED DO YOU CARE?

You can't eat allah. Interesting how the afgais cannabilized the talibs for a few million dollars and air support.

As for the Ranger killed he volunteered, twice. Once for the army and then again to be a ranger. Any ranger will tell you they know the risk of their job. The rangers i have met understand they are not remfs and have dangerous jobs. several rangers are severely injured or killed anually just training with their units. I would bet the people who really knew mr checo his family and fellow rangers would agree that he made his choice and understood the risks.

"DO YOU TAKE LIFE SO LIGHTLY THAT ONLY WHEN YOUR FAMILY IS KILLED DO YOU CARE?"

That does seem to be the case for most flag-waving patriots. They will *never* forget the people who died in NY, but everyplace else? They could care less. In fact, if you mention it they'll treat you like you're insane.

As long as the media has shoved 9/11 mythology in through their eyeballs while they were hypnotized, they'll do anything moron government wants them to.

Hitler could be walking in the halls of our capital and the average moron patriot is too busy with his sports page to have a clue. They can't be bothered if it isn't something on the TV, all fixed-up with soundtracks and fluttering flags, just like a soap opera. Grown men falling for patriotic soap operas, really sad.

And now, all these flags flying again - just at the thought of war in Iraq - patriots are making sure everyone knows just where they stand, like good little morons.

It sickens me every day to see them.

>>> There is no defense against terrorism, none, zero, nada zilch. <<<

The U.S. is relatively isolated geographically from our enemies, unlike Europe, Israel, etc. We could stop more terrorists from infiltrating by tightly controlling our borders, harbors, etc.. We could reduce the number of terrorists already here by strictly enforcing immigration law. The latter would have side benefits in places like CA as well because it would ease some of the burden on our strained natural resources (particularly water) and on our social structure (health care, education, etc.)

We got attacked because, for too long, we listened to the P.C. "we are the world," "we are all the same" and "all people are good" crap.

Crap indeed.
Dispite many warnings from various government intelligence
services, the ‘event’ at 9-11, 2001 was allowed to
happen while our 13 trillion price tag military sat
with their thumbs up their but to give the U.S. an
excuse to accomplish an agenda which needed
just such a pre planned occurrence to lead us to
a martial state.
We were attacked because the economy was tanking, there
were rising murmurs of election fraud, and corporate
theft.
Something had to be done.
The blame lays, if not in the house; then at the
doorsteps of the CIA.
This is evident to anyone who doesn’t have serious brian damage.

The Middle Eastern countries have been inhabited for a million frickin' years, and still wouldn' t have the wheel, or fire-making capability if not for a few other countries, especially the US. OK - we have been stupid and have made some mistakes. But there are hundreds of peoples all over the world, include the American Indians, who have, all-in-all, benefitted from the advances the US has made over its comparitively short 200+ year history. They wouldn't have the cell phones, TV, radio, penecillan, x-rays, dirty movies, booze, trucks, electric light, frisbees, airplanes, pencils, and a million other things that they have come to use and enjoy - both good and bad - if not for us. And that includes the latest weapons. If you don't think they have gotten used to those things, just ask them to do without them. They wouldn't even have a map of their stinking countries if not for us. From their perspective, their relationship with the US hasn't been completely wasted. They have done NOTHING to earn any of the post-stone-age improvements they now have. They have contributed NOTHING toward the betterment of anybody, including themselves, in all the time they have had to do it. They haven't even improved on a weapon. And oil doesn't count, because its existence in their countries is only a coincidence of where they are located, and not the result of any hard work, brains, inginuity, or abilities on their part. They didn't even know it was there, until we figured it out and how to use it. We are talking about people who have never originated a thought or an idea. You can't go and paint the US as a purely imperialistic nation slaughtering peaceloving peoples, either. Sure, we have gotten pushy and out of line imposing ourselves on other people where we had no right being. And in a lot of cases we can't blame them for hating our guts as they do. But let's be completely fair in this criticism: those worthless bastards are not a bunch of innocent 4-year-old girls - they have been installing their own stinking dictators and slaughtering each other for centuries. These people have had a 10,000-year head start on the US. They wasted it, and now are jealousof us. So, like a bunch of kids, they have tantrums and strike out at us. That's fine - but they need to expect to get the hell kicked out of them. They're lucky we are both stupid and rich. We'll kick hell out of them, then kick them into the 21st century by rebuilding their rotten countries - which they don't deserve - at our own expense. Then we'll get trade going with them, and eventually they will choke us to death economically. (If the North Vietnamese had had any brains, they would have let us win the stinking war, because we are the only nation in the world who has ever been stupid enough to rebuild and modernize the nations we conquer, right or wrong, and on our own nickel. Just ask the American Indians or the Japanese how they have made out - and it was the Japanese who started the mess in the first place).

Ideally, we need to leave other people alone - completely alone. We are hated both inside and outside our own country for the bad we have done and not appreciated at all for all the good we have done. We just can't win, so let's have no imports/no exports, no phone calls, no embassies, no letters, no internet, no immigration, no CNN, no travel, no vacations, no passports, no sharing technology, no visas, no business, no exceptions - just cut off the rest of the world, including Mexico and Canada, and let them do whatever they want. If they need something, let them get off their asses and invent it the hard way like we have done. We should be so isolated from them that we don't care or even know who is in charge over there. Just mind our own business inside our borders, and let them do whatever they want to each other. Before we close the doors, let's let out all the people living here who hate it, and think they have it so bad, and have such great affection for those who have come to be our enemies - for whatever right or wrong reasons. (It isn't perfect here, but if you hate it so badly, GET LOST - constant bashing this country is just getting in the way of fixing it. Are you going to sit around a gripe about a flat tire, who caused it and those working on the problem, or are you going to shut up, get off your ass and help fix it?)

We DO NOT NEED anybody else. Then, when they mess with us, we won't be at any fault, we can kick the crap out of them and we can get back to minding our own business.
Thats a weird way to see the world when in a real sense the Middle East was the place where the wheel was invented and Iraq has the remains of the earliest cities that have ever been found.

Up until the 1500s the Middle East was way ahead of the rest of the world in science and technology. When the Western Roman Empire had collapsed and Europe was regressing, the Arab world was making advances in science and math not seen since the height of ancient Greece.

"Perhaps one of the most significant advances made by Arabic mathematics began at this time with the work of al-Khwarizmi, namely the beginnings of algebra. It is important to understand just how significant this new idea was. It was a revolutionary move away from the Greek concept of mathematics which was essentially geometry.

Algebra was a unifying theory which allowed rational numbers, irrational numbers, geometrical magnitudes, etc., to all be treated as "algebraic objects". It gave mathematics a whole new development path so much broader in concept to that which had existed before, and provided a vehicle for future development of the subject. Another important aspect of the introduction of algebraic ideas was that it allowed mathematics to be applied to itself in a way which had not happened before"
http://www-gap.dcs.st-and.ac.uk/~history/HistTopics/Arabic_mathematics.html

Most of what you are taught in school today as being Euclidean actually came though the Middle East. Euclid's works were studied and turned into their modern forms (since the Greeks had used 100% geometry without numbers in their original proofs)

The adoption of Indian numeral "allowed the extraction of roots by mathematicians such as Abu'l-Wafa and Omar Khayyam (born 1048). The discovery of the binomial theorem for integer exponents by al-Karaji (born 953) was a major factor in the development of numerical analysis based on the decimal system. Al-Kashi (born1380) contributed to the development of decimal fractions not only for approximating algebraic numbers, but also for real numbers such as . His contribution to decimal fractions is so major that for many years he was considered as their inventor. Although not the first to do so, al-Kashi gave an algorithm for calculating nth roots which is a special case of the methods given many centuries later by Ruffini and Horner.

Although the Arabic mathematicians are most famed for their work on algebra, number theory and number systems, they also made considerable contributions to geometry, trigonometry and mathematical astronomy. Ibrahim ibn Sinan (born 908), who introduced a method of integration more general than that of Archimedes, and al-Quhi (born 940) were leading figures in a revival and continuation of Greek higher geometry in the Islamic world. These mathematicians, and in particular al-Haytham, studied optics and investigated the optical properties of mirrors made from conic sections. Omar Khayyam combined the use of trigonometry and approximation theory to provide methods of solving algebraic equations by geometrical means.
...
Many of the Arabic mathematicians produced tables of trigonometric functions as part of their studies of astronomy. These include Ulugh Beg (born 1393) and al-Kashi. The construction of astronomical instruments such as the astrolabe was also a speciality of the Arabs. Al-Mahani used an astrolabe while Ahmed (born 835), al-Khazin (born 900), Ibrahim ibn Sinan, al-Quhi, Abu Nasr Mansur (born 965), al-Biruni, and others, all wrote important treatises on the astrolabe. Sharaf al-Din al-Tusi (born 1201) invented the linear astrolabe.

The Mongols destroyed muych of the Middle East and the Ottomon Empire produced less advances than the Arabs, but for much of its history it was still far ahead of the West.
"Scientific literature developed considerably in the period of Sultan Süleymân the Magnificent. We find two major mathematical books in Turkish entitled Jamal al-Kuttab wa Kamal al-Hussah (Beauty of Scribes and Perfection of Accountants) and 'Umdat al-Hisah (Treatise on arithmetic) by Nasuh al-Silahi al-Matraki (d. 971/1564). His book in Turkish entitled Beyân-ı Menâzil-i Sefer-i Irakeyn (Description of the Stopping Places of the Campaign to the Two Iraqs), related to geography, should also be mentioned. Musa b. Hamun (d. 1554), one of the famous Jewish physicians from Andalusian descent, was appointed as Sultan Süleymân's physician and wrote the first Turkish and one of the earliest independent works on dentistry which is based on Greek, Islamic, and Uighur Turkish medical sources and in particular Sabuncuoğlu Ceerefeddin's works (Terzioğlu, 1977). In the sixteenth century, important works on astronomy were written by the representatives of the Egypt-Damascus tradition of astronomy-mathematics. The greatest astronomer of this period was Taki al-Din al-Rasid (d. 1585) who combined the Egyptian-Damascus and Samarkand traditions of astronomy and mathematics in his studies. He wrote more than thirty books in Arabic on the subjects of mathematics, astronomy, mechanics, and medicine."

1. The Vietnam War: a peace agreement was reached, signed on Jan. 27, 1973, by the United States, North Vietnam, South Vietnam, and the NLF's provisional revolutionary government. The accord provided for the end of hostilities, the withdrawal of U.S. and allied troops (several Southeast Asia Treaty Organization countries had sent token forces), the return of prisoners of war, and the formation of a four-nation international control commission to ensure peace.

What does this tell us? Never trust a Commie.

Two things...all Mr. Gore had to do was win his home state..and the results in Florida would be moot..But, alas, the folks that knew him the best elected to go another direction...Was this a conspiracy also ??

You can count the ballots from here til eternity and you will always see the same result..Gore is and always has been ..a loser..

And as far as the war in Viet nam goes;

I still have not forgotten the SF activists that spat on me when i returned from SEA. You can claim that you are the true patriots of this nation all you want, but you true colors showed up that autumn day in 71, when i encountered your ambassadors...

Funny, how they yelped for protection and assistance from the "Pigs" when i clocked the one with the biggest mouth...the rest scattered like roached when the lights are turned on..

Hey you ignorant ASS! My brother wasn't out there killing innocent people he was out there CAPTURING the Devil's Menions not killing them lets get that straight. That shows how much you know about the war. Second of all if you forgot let me remind you that on 9/11 they used our innocents as human bombs but I guess that ain't good enough of a reason for you. As for that little comment that you made about him getting the Afghan Lesson just lets to show how ignorant and small minded you are.
by history buff
imperialist invaders.

Damn Americans really are crazed religous kooks. I can see how the US supported the Taliban for all those years before 9/11It fits with the Fundamentalist Christian belief system.
by your worst nightmare
listen first of all think before you speak, We are talking about a U.S. Airborne been killed in Afghanistan, have you no heart, consideration, and a conscience to post such a dumb ignorant article. You should be proud the Steven and other soldiers are protecting our country with their lives on the line. I would like to see you there in Afghanistan you won't even make it as you deploy...So have some consideration and THINK BEFORE YOU SPEAK...You do not know the trauma this family and many others are going through thinking that their child, cousin, brother...might not come back alive.
ASSHOLE!

it's an all-volunteer military, you piece of shit.

you volunteer to learn to kill people,
then yo go out and kill people.

so i will dance a little jig each time one of you dies.
your suffering is NOTHING compared to the misery you unleash onto brown and poor people around the world.

family? what of the famillies in iraq and palestine? you deserve no family while you drop bombs on water treatment facilities! on pharmacutical plants! on civilian shelters!

you think you are defending america? how fucking stupid can you be? you are making the world less safe, not more.
by j
no one was talking about bombing iraqi's and the palestines

you PISSED OFF many people by saying that the Sgt. deserve to die.

yeah i know Bush is a @#$% but don't bring his ideas, to that of the Sgt. learning his lesson.

what the hell is everyone thinking. Anybody who reads and doesn't quickly look to opening thier mouths understands the nature of capitalism, the market economy and state sovereignity. These are deep rooted in our country. This didn't happen overnight yeah know. Our forefathers built this country on these principles way before we were born. Our countries government built all thier laws and businesses around it. We will never get rid of profit hungering companies, politicians that play the name for money game, and our president has a cabinet of old blue blooded conservatives who are looking to make the upper 5% happy. This is fact -this will not change. We, the other classes, have never been part of the ruling class and fear to say have never made such any dent in the systems that we complain about. Instead of fighting about Iraq and Afghanistan and veterans benefits, lets look to other ways to improve the little things in our own communities first. Things do not start at the top, they start at the bottom. If people think they are going to change this gov. and thier monetary support for large corporations, you are mistaken. I beleive Community should be the priority. Raise money and set the example for other communities. This will trickle. Raise children to see a newer vision for the future of america-perhapse litlte corruption. War has always been part of our worlds history. Hey i'm just glad i live in country that keeps us pretty safe-you think it's natural? Nope alot of dirty things happen to keep it this way - i wish it were different but... If you have an opinion about soldiers, why don't you ask them why they enlisted? Don't forget, everyone's experience is different. It will vary. Taking sides to supprt your argument huh? Yeah we all know how that works. You wanna make a change stop fighting the authorities and start thinking about how to make them listen. Go over thier heads. Violence is a temporary solution at a local and global level. set the example. Sociology 101 folks. I'm not a patriot but sure am happy that i can go to supermarket and buy whatever the hell i want for dinner and anyone else whom might be hungry. bom appetite. Lots of talk and no mature action. ohh brother!!!

>>> so i will dance a little jig each time one of you dies. your suffering is NOTHING compared to the misery you unleash onto brown and poor people around the world. <<<

So there you go. Your side is just as hateful as you claim the other side is.

Well, guess what, we're going to be bombing the f**k out of Iraq shortly and there is NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO STOP IT! All your protesting, window-smashing, and ranting on a web site, won't stop it.

I remember the day two of my friends died in the World Trade Center and CNN showed video of Arabs dancing in the streets. Well, soon it will be my turn to dance the jig of sweet revenge.

"Well, guess what, we're going to be bombing the f**k out of Iraq shortly and there is NOTHING YOU CAN DO TO STOP IT! "

that remains to be seen. the day the war starts, america stops.

"I remember the day two of my friends died in the World Trade Center and CNN showed video of Arabs dancing in the streets"

funny how CNN didnt show you footage of the israelis dancing on rooftops in NYC. they were later arrested, found to be munitions experts for the mossad, and then deported. the owner of the company they worked for (Urban Moving Systems) abondoned his business and fled to israel. funny how the director of the FBI says the identities of the highjackers is unknown. funny how hamid karzai used to be an executive for unocal oil, which was once refused an afghan pipeline but now will have it.

ever hear of something called the US Constitution? it's the highest law of the land. any american who goes against it is a TRAITOR.

the constitution says quite clearly that if the president signs a treaty and the senate ratifies it, it is the law of the land, just as high as the constitution itself.

after WWII, the US signed the UN charter which says that war is rejected as a means of resolving disputes, and that signatories to the charter are not allowed to attack another nation unless the UN security council authorizes it. a nation can attack another without approval ONLY if they have been attacked first.

that's not just international law, that is the LAW OF THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, which is supposed to be a nation of laws, not men.

the moment bush authorizes military action against iraq without UN approval he becomes a traitor to america, just like you.

US soliders are instructed that they are not to follow illegal orders. show me even ONE solider that is upholding his legal responsibilities, and i will change my stance.

meanwhile, you are still a traitor.
