Hundreds of Muslim Immigrants Rounded Up in Calif.

by Reuters
LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Hundreds of Iranian and other Middle East citizens were in southern California jails on Wednesday after coming forward to comply with a new rule to register with immigration authorities only to wind up handcuffed and behind bars.

Here's a report from the U of Washington in Seattle which a few local indep journalists are trying to follow up on - trying to trace who is giving these surveys. This is the basic description written by a researcher there:

"A friend of mine who is from the middle east got a letter from some UW
department saying he would be contacted by phone and asked to participate in
a telephone survey about crime.

They called a couple days later and spent about 90 minutes asking him
questions. In between innocuous questions about crime in his neighborhood,
they asked him things like "have you ever donated money to a mosque?," and
"have you ever done anything for which you could have been arrested?"

My friend knows of other people from the middle east who were contacted. But
neither he nor I have heard of anyone else who was.

He thinks it's bogus and I tend to agree. It smells to me like the federal
government using UW studies and departments in order to gather data on
people it wants to monitor. At this point I don't have any more information
but I am trying to get more. Does anyone have any information on this?
It's my understanding that much information about publically funded studies
can be obtained by the public.

If anyone has any info on this, send it my way. If I can find out anything
substantive, perhaps I or someone else will write up an article on this for one of the local rags."

Are there any protests planned in SF? There was a protest of 2,000 in LA.

"Are there any protests planned in SF? There was a protest of 2,000 in LA. "

Ther probably won't be any protests in SF. Protesters usually don't really care about the issues they are protesting, they just like to get all dresed up and draw attention to themselves.

If it raining, they will not protest. Once the weather warms up, they will start protesting something or other.

In Canada the authorities are attacking immigrants who are Arab and/or Muslim, though it hasn't (to my knowledge) been in this exact manner.

In Montreal, Quebec, the group "No One Is Illegal" has organised protests, campaigns, conferences, radio shows, and because of their efforts, some things - although just a wee bit - have changed. But i assure you that they are still going strong and will continue the struggle.

These are human beings we are talking about !! Do a flyer campaign at the airport, go to the malls, go to the local community radio stations, organise damn it... these are human beings !! If you think the rain is bad, think about the cold, with snow, icestorms, hell, don't be complacent.

Think about being forced to return to your country and end up being tortured and/or dead. There must be some student society, or community groups that would be interested. What we're talking about is the F word, thats right, facism.

We can not let our sisters and brothers be treated like this. We are all of the human race. An injustice to one, is an injustice to all. We must fight against fascism, in all its forms.

It really touched me when the other person posted something about his friend being asked questions in regards to when he has ever given money to his mosque... these people ain't asking if Christians or Jews are giving money to their respective religious organisations!

You say "Don't Blame the INS". The INS (la Migra) is now a part of the Departement of Homeland Security, which by the wya is part of the government of the United Snakes. But even if they weren't part of HS, why not blame this band of double-dealin' thugs, who tell people to register, and then arrest them illegally and hold them in abominable conditions when they do. I have never been more ashamed to be born in this country

It wasn't your fault. It was luck of the draw. As Americans go, you exemplary. If there were more Americans like you, the world wouldn’t hate us so much.

The wierd thing is, this actually makes me feel less alone about whats happening here in australia with the refugees. It appears we're not the only one with a hostile crazy facist government.

Please America, land of the free, *please* don't go down that path. Let those people free!

I was shocked as well when I heard about those mass arrestings and the depotation that will follow after that. I have a suggestion which worked quiet well here where I live. You need to find out about the plains in which people are supposed to be deported then write flyers which explain the situation of these people. An easy way of civil disobedience is to ask the other passengers not to sit down, not to put their seatbelts on, not to switch their cellphones of, to sing and make BAMBULE until the person may stay.
Of cause this will have little real consequeses but at least you inform other people and show them how easy resistance can be. You bring a singel destiny closer to them.
I think direct action is as much important as going to demonstrations.
Now to the people who feel ashame for their citizenship and who think Bush is the devil.
I think it is to easy to put all the evil on one person.
Bush is not the devil! Of course he is pretty inhuman, stupid and stuff but it is the system that makes him strong and that gives him support. This is the same in every other country. Imagin him in a society where everybody is and may be different and where there is nobody with power over others. How people would laugh about this little, crazy talking figure. It is the system which needs to go down. The institutions of government, big coorperations, pharma industry, etc.
Everything could be so easy and nice. But before this can happen people need to become concious about their own power and what they can do for a better new world.

I am saddened, humiliated and outraged over the conduct of our government for the unwarranted arrest of so many foreigners. The Bush Administration is guilty of violating everything that is good about this country. For what, revenge, power, superior attitude? Is this the way to deal iwith terrorism? I think not. How sad! How very sad!
