Describing the Gujarat results as a "victory for Hindutva', VHP senior vice-president, Acharya Giriraj Kishore, said on phone from Mumbai, "it is high time the so-called secularists realise the strength of Hindus and rectify their political line."
Read writing on the wall: RSS

New Delhi, Dec. 15. (PTI): An elated Sangh Parivar today described the BJP's emphatic win in the Gujarat elections as a "victory of Hindutva and nationalist forces" which would change the direction of the country's politics.

"It is a victory of nationalist forces. The Gujarat electorate have given a message to both Congress and the BJP and they should read the writing on the wall," RSS joint spokesman Ram Madhav said.

Even the BJP, he said, should keep in mind the "upsurge of nationalist feelings" in the country while drawing its future course of action.

Madhav expressed hope that verdict would change the direction of national politics.

India may become Hindu Rashtra in two years: Togadia
Press Trust of India
New Delhi, December 15

Buoyed by BJP's emphatic victory in the Gujarat elections, VHP on Sunday said India could turn into a 'Hindu Rashtra' in the next two years even as the RSS said the results were a "writing on the wall" for the BJP in deciding its future course of action.

"Hindu Rashtra could be expected in next two years...We will change the Indian history and Pakistan's geography by then," a belligerent Praveen Togadia, VHP's firebrand Secretary General, told reporters in Jaipur.

Both the BJP and the Congress have to change their outlook on 'Hindu Rashtra', he said, adding, "minorities should decide themselves how they want to live in India...VHP will not decide their future...It is a question of co-existence in Hindu Rashtra."

Meanwhile, in Delhi, RSS described the Gujarat verdict as a victory of "nationalist forces."

"The Gujarat electorate have given a message to both Congress and the BJP and they should read the writing on the wall," RSS Joint Spokesman Ram Madhav told PTI.

BJP victory setback for secular democracy : CPI

PTI[ SUNDAY, DECEMBER 15, 2002 04:08:40 PM ]

NEW DELHI: The Communist Party of India said on Sunday the "communal divide and polarised social fabric" encouraged by the BJP, VHP and other Sangh Parivar outfits had led to the victory for the BJP in Gujarat.

"BJP's victory is a setback for the cause of secular democracy," CPI National Secretary D Raja said here.

"Historically, the pro-business and virulently anticommunist BJP has been India’s most fervently pro-US party. Under the BJP’s influence, India recently came out in support of the US missile shield initiative"

"The BJP has been seeking a new lease of life through US President George Bush's “war on terrorism”. In the name of supporting the US-led “war”, the BJP has tried to promulgate its own version of anti-terrorist legislation — the Prevention of Terrorist Ordinance (POTO).

The POTO contains draconian provisions which seriously undermine democratic and civil rights. It allows indefinite detention without trial, shifts the onus of proof to the accused party and has made admissible to the court any confession given to the police.

“This means the police will be in a position to intimidate, terrorise and coerce people into making all sorts of confessions… all based on a thoroughly vague definition of what constitutes terrorism”, Bhattacharya said, adding that the POTO reverses current Indian principles of justice.

The POTO has been approved by the lower house of Parliament but not by the upper house. This has prompted the BJP to take the extraordinary move of calling a joint session of the two houses in order to push the ordinance through, ignoring widespread opposition and popular protests. "
