Fisk - Ariel Sharon Has Walked Into a Trap
This was one of his more interesting articles. I sort of thought Israel was *already* in the loop, although I guess not as symbolically 'officially' as they are now.

Ariel Sharon Has Walked Into a Trap.
And We Are Following Him
by Robert Fisk
Time was when Bali would have been the story of the year, the most violent act in 12 months, to be recalled with horror in December as the most terrible of crimes. But Bali was just the story of the month. And soon, perhaps, the Karachi bombings and the Bali bombings and the Mombasa bombings will be just stories of the week. See how easily we have acclimatized to death on a vast scale? What is to be this week's nightmare? How many innocents will be killed by the time you open next week's Independent on Sunday?
But last week's killings in Kenya and the attempt to bring down an Israeli airliner were far more important than most people realize. For by bringing Israel into the loop – by allowing Israel to become a partner in President Bush's asinine "war on terror" – al-Qa'ida has ensured that the Arab Muslim world will henceforth give its real if quiescent sympathy to Osama bin Laden. Outraged as many Arabs were at the international crimes against humanity of 11 September 2001, few will object to an attack against Israelis, however cruel, while Israel's suppression of the Palestinians continues. If al-Qa'ida is now against Israel, Arabs will give their support.

the bush admin. wants to occupy and control iraq. and after iraq, who knows? but the trap is the very idea that IT CAN CONTROL by occupation, or by setting up puppet regimes.
look at israel's occupation of palestine. has that brought security to israel? will it ever?
so what if america carries out the same failed policy on a larger scale? occupying entire states, setting up puppets with american finger prints all over them. what's to say that islamic fundamentalists inside iraq won't spring up and wage war against the new american puppet?
the only way for america or it's puppets to pacify and control their populations is to rule as ruthlessly and powerfully as saddam rules iraq now. with an iron fist. the reason why iraq has a secular government, or at least not an islamic fundamentalist one, is by in large because of saddam's ruthless oppression of his people.
what's to say that an american puppet won't have to rule in a similar way in order to supress a new islamic movement inside iraq? what's to say that the american puppet won't rule like the shah of iran, and face exactly the same fate? what's to say this whole idea of "controlling" iraq isn't just playing with a hornet's nest, or creating a quagmire requiring endless years of american military actions and hundreds of billions of dollars, all to keep an american puppet in baghdad propped up?
quagmire - n. - 1. soft miry land that shakes or yields under the foot 2. a difficult, precarious, or entrapping position: PREDICAMENT.
