Planning Commission Delays Day Labor Program Hearing Yet Again

by SF Day Labor Program
Planning Commission delays Day Labor Program hearing for the 5th time!! However, we will be attending the meeting this thursday to register our anger at the continuing delay and announce our filing of a lawsuit...
Dear friends and allies of the SF Day Labor Program,

I am writing with the disturbing news that the SF Planning Department has for the FIFTH TIME IN THE PAST SIX MONTHS postponed the hearing to consider the Day Labor Program's move to 3358 Cesar Chavez St.!! The Department, lead by Gerald Green, continues to stall the process by creating new excuses every time a hearing date approaches. It is more and more clear that the building hearing is tied to the Mayor's current stalling of the city contract, which until recently was held by La Raza Centro Legal to run the SF Day Labor Program.

WE ARE STILL GOING TO CITY HALL ON DECEMBER 5!! Please join San Francisco day laborers in a rally and press conference on December 5, 1:30, main steps of City Hall. Day laborers and their supporters will denounce the Planning Department's stalling of the Day Labor Program's move to Cesar Chavez St., as well as the Mayor's termination of city funds to the Day Labor Program.

WE WILL ALSO BE ANNOUNCING THE FILING OF OUR LAWSUIT AGAINST THE CITY!! The Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund (MALDEF) is filing a lawsuit on behalf of La Raza Centro Legal/SF Day Labor Program because the city violated the workers' and our agency's First Amendment right to protest
without suffering retaliation.

WE NEED YOUR SUPPORT ON DECEMBER 5, 1:30, CITY HALL!!

If you have questions, please feel free to contact me at renee [at] lrcl.org or

Venceremos,

Renee Saucedo

Renee knows that the proposed sight for the day laborers is to small

Renee knows that the day laborers won't use the building anyway. They don't use the trailers now. They stand on our street corners and on our homes polluting the neighborhood beyond belief.

Renee knows the traffic to the neighborhood will increase. The "absurd" notion that traffic will increase is based on the fact that contractors are already buzzing up and down our streets. We see it everyday. What are the laborers waiting on our corner everyday for if not to be picked up by a contractor who is causing traffic! We live here, Renee does not. But of course we are all racists over here and all the neighbors are lying about the traffic and the garbage.

I'm sure the kids at the karate school right next door to the proposed site will love to step over feces and smell the urine baking in the sun. Don't believe me? Take a walk by the paint store on Cesar Chavez's where the laborers sit and take a wiff. Take a walk by the gas station at South Van Ness and take a wiff. Stroll down 26th St. and see all the lovely styrofoam cups and plates the labors eat and drink from everyday shoved into our sewer system.

But that's right, they care and give so much to the community through their taxes and volunteer work. They really care about our street sand want to see it clean, since they use it for their loading zone.

But you guys are right, we don't have any rights only the day laborers matter. The people who live and have homes in this area don't have any rights and we should just shut up and keep paying our property taxes and let the day laborers just crap all over our neighborhood. We should pick up after them because they work so hard and we don't. We should walk over their human waste and garbage because we got it good and they are poor and from Mexico and they pick our wine and food.

Well guess what. I don't care. I don't care one ounce. Because they don't. Ask them. Believe me Renee, it shows. I'm glad the city took away your money, I guess you'll have to fuel your political career with your own money and not on the backs of the day laborers!
We are 100% volunteer and depend on your participation to sustain our efforts!
