Clay Haswell Speaks (or not) on Associated Press Priorities in San Francisco

by gkd/sf-imc
The Associated Press contacted SF Indymedia to find out about this kid who killed a cop in Red Bluff. But I had some questions of my own about the blood on AP's hands.
clay_haswell.jpg" A man suspected of fatally shooting a police officer in Red Bluff last week has apparently published some form of explanation at San Francisco Indymedia. According to the post from "Andrew McCrae" on SF-IMC, he shot the police officer in protest of "war abroad and a police state at home." The article goes on to suggest that he should receive immunity for his crimes because he first incorporated himself as "Proud and Insolent Youth Incorporated," and corporations always get away with murder.

Colleen Valles of the Associated Press sent SF Indymedia an email this morning, asking for further information about the post. As an SF-IMC volunteer, I returned her call and explained that SF-IMC is an anonymous open publishing website, and that we can't verify or validate any information.

I also told her that I wanted to "trade" questions. If AP gets to ask us about this, we should get to ask them about something in return.

Unfortunately, the Associated Press wasn't as forthcoming as we were. Colleen couldn't comment because she isn't a spokesperson for AP, so she sent me to Clay Haswell, who is Bureau Chief of the San Francisco Bureau of the Associated Press. Using the logic of the "Proud and Insolent Youth" incorporation, I asked Mr. Haswell why it seems like murders, abductions and other crimes are enthusiastically reported by the Associated Press -- except when a corporation is behind it. Mr. Haswell's only response? "The Associated Press reports on events all over the world."

Since this is not really an answer to my question, I decided to go into specifics. For instance, the Associated Press Managing Editors receives funding from the Ford Foundation to operate their "Credibility Roundtables." And there certainly are Associated Press resources spent on covering the Ford Foundation -- for example, a privacy study they funded. But nowhere can I find any Associated Press resources dedicated to uncovering exactly what the Ford Foundation's role was during the "Dirty War" in Argentina and throughout South America. Nor can I find any articles by the Associated Press about what Ford Foundation's role is today in funding media projects. Mr. Haswell had no answer besides he thought it was up for debate whether the "Managing Editors" could really be considered part of the Associated Press.

Concerned that this example was too obscure, I decided to ask about San Francisco-based Bechtel. The Associated Press has come under fire because the AP correspondent in Bolivia, Peter McFarren, has routinely regurgitated the Bechtel line on water privatization uprisings in Bolivia (that they are the work of "narcotraffickers," not Bolivian people who want to control their own natural resources). In fact, Mr. McFarren simultaneously reported on the water uprisings while lobbying the Bolivian Congress for a $78 million water export project. Now, this is a San Francisco story about clear corporate criminality as well as a clear conflict-of-interest for the AP -- and yet Mr. Haswell could only continue to repeat that the "AP has reporters all over the world."

I kept trying to ask specifics, but Mr. Haswell kept backpedaling away from specifics. I even gave him an easy one -- the Associated Press's complicity in the embarrassing corporate media propagandizing when the first coup attempt against Hugo Chavez happened recently in Venezuela. I thought that certainly a Bureau Chief of a major metropolitan area would have an inkling of an opinion on this now-famous corporate media blunder. But still, no answer -- only that the "AP reports on events all over the world."

Finally, we are left with no answers, vague denials, and dismissals. Mr. Haswell is either a Bureau Chief that knows almost nothing about important current events, or he is a Bureau Chief that covers up the mis-doings of his own corporate master.

When will the corporate media start reporting on the murders and crimes of corporations just as much as they report on the crimes of individuals? The answer is probably never, which is why there are now hundreds of independent media centers around the world, co-ordinating coverage from thousands of independent media producers.

The article refers to the lack of coverage that AP dedicated to the recent trials started in argentina against Ford for it's actions during the last military dictatorship there. It is in fact true that Ford is now facing several different trials ranging from 25 of it's workers who where kidanaped and executed to the companies dealings with the military goverment which led to members of the military using the factories to turture workers and posibly others.

Despite the fact that "AP has reporters all over the world." they have chosen to ignroe this piece of news:

" La semana pasada, el fiscal hizo una presentación contra el directorio del empresa Ford por las desapariciones de veinticinco obreros durante la última dictadura." -- http://pagina12.feedback.net.ar/buscador/ver.php?idnota=12662&idsec=1

This article by a local Argentine newspaper describes the current trials against Ford for the kidnaping and killing of the 25 workers refered to above.

If you feel like crowing about some supposed "moral superiority", please do so in a thread titled as much.

In the meantime, please post relevant information about this particular story here where it can be easily found (and not in another thread titled like "Ford Foundation").

Hahaha sounds like the AP tried to do another "bleed and lead" story and instead got it handed back to them!!! EXCELLENT!!!!!

well haha
the associated press cant answer questions like that on the spot

they need to hire a PR consultant first

You should have asked the Associated Press why they didn't focus on the corrupt murderers and pieces of shit in LA's Ramparts Division today --- they all got off with charges dropped. Funny how things work out for the boys in blue, huh?

Indymedia folks are treading on dangerous waters here...

I hope people are aware of the potential crackdown / scapegoating that could occur as a result of this bizarre and tragic story.

On top of the frequent "fuck the pigs" and other similar politically immature posts, we now have an actual Indymedia volunteer parrotting the line of the alleged cop killer to the AP.

Though I doubt (hopefully) that the Indymedia volunteer who spoke to the AP intended as such, his/her appatent attitude could easily be interpreted at simpathetic or at least callously indifferent to the murder of a police officer.

Again, I don't believe that the IMC volunteer felt this way... but if one puts themselves in the shoes of an outsider unfamiliar with Indymedia, this is a logical conclusion.

Individual acts of "political" violence carried out (supposedly) on behalf of a cause, can only hurt said cause.

This is the last thing the global justice movement(s) needs. Unless, of course, you really want a police state to come crashing down on all of us.

I guess sf.indymedia should be careful but that guy posted to sf.indymedia hours after posting to tens of others of sites.

Whats strange is that even the Olympian's coverage of a shooting by an Evergreen student mentions SF and doesnt mention that the guy first posted to local websites in Washington state:

Yes, AP really missed out on a significant part of the 'confession' side of the story by failure to ask deeper questions. They just kept repeating that it was only sf.indymedia where the confessions was reported, probably because the police in Concord listed that site.
Here is what someone described on portland.indymedia about the IP addresses involved:
We now know that the person who posted the confession and manifesto to San Francisco Indymedia also posted this material to numerous other IMC sites, in some instances hours before the post to SF IMC <see http://www.indybay.org/news/2002/11/1545491_comment.php#1545887>

This person, or a different person also emailed at least 26 other people or organizations, including

greenteacher.com, npq.org, nacla.org, utne.com, merip.org, ceip.org, covertaction.org, clamormagazine.org, progressive.org, fair.org, dollarsandsense.org, punkplanet.com, altpr.org

and those partially redacted on http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/796409/posts
which include

"2 of the receipents domain addresses were website design and hosting companies.
"1 domain belongs to a trial lawyer.
"1 domain is not a registered domain.
"1 domain was a University in Canada.
"1 domain was a site with links to other sites for web research on just about anything imaginable.
"The other 7 sites that I looked at are left of center, socialist or flatout marxist sites."

The person who posted this to Free Republic said that, when he discovered there had in fact been a murder, he contacted police and FBI and provided them with all of the information contained in the email. This led the Feds to an internet cafe in Seattle with the ip address 207.207.84.14. The email address used to send to this batch was mitch stevens < americanresistance [at] yahoo.com >. The above batch of recipients got an email from James Jameson <endourwar [at] yahoo.com> from the same ip address. These pseudonymous emails were sent on Friday and referenced a "we". The articles on Indymedia were posted on Monday, signed Andy McCrae.

The looming questions are
1) Why has the AP suggested the San Francisco IMC was the sole media contact for the suspect? Were they led in that direction by Concord Police Chief Jerry Madden, as suggested in this artlcle
http://www.sacbee.com/content/news/crime/story/5372487p-6360638c.html
2) Who else did this person contact? If he used different email addresses for each of these emails to 13 people, we can guess he had a list that was longer than 26. Who was on that list and what did they do with the email they received?

What seems clear is that the AP does not know the full story and is doing a sloppy job of it. And it seems to be the case, conspiracy theories aside, that the suspect in this murder had a message that he desparately wanted to get out through the media, but all outlets were closed to him, except Indymedia. While Officer Mobilio's death is the most obvious tragedy here, that Indymedia may actually be the only way left for Americans to communicate with their fellow citizens should leave us all bereft.

aside from the alleged broadcasted confession, has the cops announced the discovery of any additional evidence (i.e. gun) or other corroboration linking McCrae to the shooting? anyone one can make a confession but it doesn't necessarily mean it's true. allot of people make false confession either because cops coerced it out of them or the person making the confession wants to draw attention to him or her self. i don't think what McCrae published in IMC should be considered the smoking gun until new evidence is brought forward. there's nothing in his publication that specifically identifies "what the killer would know about the crime" other than a general admission of "I shot the cop." important questions to the cops who are monitoring this website independent of McCrae's confession: can you place him at the crime scene? has he told you what he did with the gun? have you found the gun? was ballistic residue found on his person or clothing? does his car or home contain any physical evidence linking him to the shooting? any accomplices or accessories? another consideration, maybe the IMC posting was a smokescreen to deflect attention away from the real killer(s)? i think their are allot of unanswered questions here, and as for the Red Bluff rednecks and cop sympathizers, lets not rush to judgment here until all the facts are in. if McCrae really did it he'll pay and all IMC will be guilty of is helping the cops catch a cop killer. if this turns out to be the case, then they should thank IMC.
by aphonia (aphonia [at] livejournal.com)
Took some time to read over the thread on sf.indymedia, and was well and truly impressed with the level of illiteracy amongst people with whom I probably share more than a few political views.
Did it ever occur to people that, perhaps, if this McCrae fellow is indeed guilty of the crime, that maybe he might be just about the most perfect tool to discredit the points of view that he espouses as reasons for the killing?
It sounds like paranoid bullshit, but take a look at it for a moment: The officer that was killed was ostensibly a very good man, not at all like the caricatures of policemen that are considered "legitimate" targets of hatred (such as the ones involved in the Rodney King beating). He was a young husband and father, a D.A.R.E. officer (promoting the ideas of a government-approved drug education program), and not at all "deserving" of being plugged in the back of the head.
Then, all of a sudden, you have this "obvious crackpot" with these "radical viewpoints" willing to take responsibility for the murder, using reasons right out of the cookie-cutter school of "alternative" thought. And it's not as big of a stretch for Mr. and Mrs. Middle America to believe that people who have similar viewpoints to this "nutcase" would be just as randomly violent.
And, inevitably, all the "right" things happen. Crazy person gets rejected roundly by the community that shares similar points of view. The shared viewpoints are demonized right alongside the person in the minds of mainstream Americans, who only see a crazy, young cop-killer.
It would not surprise me at all to find out, fifty years from now, that McCrae was actually a kamikaze-style agent for the ones who would be against such thoughts as the ones he espouses, even though he does so rather poorly.
I'm sure I'll get flamed for this point of view, but it seems to me that the responders on sf.indymedia are just as easily duped into yelling things such as "terrorist" and making unveiled homophobic taunts about "Bubba in prison" apparently fixing his wagon through violent anal sex. Just as easily duped as any brain-dead frat-boy stereotype watching Fox news over the televisions at the sports bar down the street.

Actually, the Associated Press should have hired this young man as a writer long ago. His writing is clear, cogent, and on the mark. Had the Associated Press and other media been doing their job all along, particularly during the last presidential campaign, we would not be in such dire straits right now with all our hard won work for the environment, workers rights and social justice going down the tubes. Had the media ever portrayed Bush for what he was, it would have taken even greater illegalities for his to seize the presidency. This is not to condone the murder of an innocent police man, far from it, but just to say the media also bears responsibility for the kettle of hot tar we are currently in.
by Miriam Weinstein
did the accused commit the crime? before folks assume he is part of a anti-left conspiracy, be reminded he attended Evergreen College - one of the most progressive, interdisciplinary institutions in the country. Add that to his training at Fort Benning GA and you have an interesting mix.
While progressives are constantly staking a claim to non-violence while attempting to turn the tide in favor of the planet and ordinary human beings, it should be remembered that the use of violence to halt greater violence was reportedly not only condoned but used by Buddha himself. To kill a police officer in Red Bluff was a heinous and unwarranted act. The police do equally thoughtless acts all the time. Just yesterday, maybe 100 or so miles further west of Red Bluff, there was just a 100 mph police chase on the highways across two counties, utilizing two California Highway Patrol squad cars, a CHP motorcycle and an airplane, causing one accident, and luckily no deaths - for what purpose you might ask???? A shoplifting incident. Wow, am I glad the police are here to protect us.
Back to Buddha. If I remember the story correctly, (and I trust I will be corrected if I don't) Buddha himself killed a man who he knew was about to kill several other people. He said it was a greater good to prevent the greater violence.
I question the wisdom of twiddling our thumbs while the planet, and what little is left of the ability to live a decent life, is rapidly destroyed.
That said, I am NOT endorsing or condoing murder. But it is imperative that all sides of every issue be looked at and put in perpective.

SF-IMC's front page feature about the story of Andrew McCrae and his web confession erroneously claims that "McCrae posted his confession letter to various IMCs and, according to the reactionary FreeRepublic.com, other media outlets as well."

As the link SF-IMC provides to the FreeRepublic story (http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/796409/posts) clearly shows, Andrew DID NOT post his story to the "reactionary" web site. Instead, the story was emailed directly to Neil E. Wright from the address, americanresistance [at] yahoo.com.

It wasn't until the following day that Andrew's letter appeared on FreeRepublic.com when Mr. Wright, the email recipient, personally posted the letter and the accompanying email header:

Um, unless I am totally understanding what you are trying to express,
I think there is a flaw with your correction, which can be seen if you go back and reread the sentence you corrected. The end of the sentence you corrected is phrased ", and according to the freerepublic.com, other media oulets as well". It did not say that the confession was originally posted on free republic website. The meaning of the sentence is that people *on* the free republic site said that the original confession was posted on sites other than indymedia sites.

The "ex-soldier" turned drifter -- allegedly turned confessed murderer -- roaming the country with multiple names and posting to a variety of alternative websites IS AN "AGENT PROVOCATEUR" PLOY.

The (plausible deniability) EX-SOLDIER(?) with multiple names (McCrae, Mickel, etc.) is a very obvious COINTELPRO-type operative. This military/fbi operation deliberately sent email messages or postings to a variety of progressive-left websites, as well as rightwing websites which question the government, as part of a typical COINTELPRO discrediting/undermining campaign. It is VERY OBVIOUS that the email messages & postings confessing to the tragic killing of a police officer by this supposed ex-soldier turned "drifter" are a PLOY to discredit both progressive-left media/organizations and also rightwing groups who criticize/protest against government policies.

This type of COINTELPRO DISINFORMATION PLOY attempts to associate government critics with violence and the advocacy of irresponsible & illegal tactics. The truth will come out about government deception and cointelpro-style, staged "agent provocateur" crimes against individual U.S. citizens and groups. Look at the reality of what occurred in the case of Judi Bari and the FBI-staged car bombing. Don't let the spooks undermine indymedia and other progressive websites (as well as any alternative media which question/criticize the government ). Be aware of rampant "agent provocateur" operations in this political climate. Don't be duped pawns of the George Bush, Sons & Cronies--Carlyle Group--Halliburton--Dyncorp--LockheedMartin--Wackenhut--ExxonMobil (Rockefeller/Standard Oil)--Citigroup--War Profiteering--Heroin/Cocaine Smuggling--Money Laundering CRIME DYNASTY.

Arizona man provided tip in Red Bluff case

Chronicle Staff Writer
Thursday, November 28, 2002

An Arizona man who received a "strange and mysterious" e-mail apologizing for the slaying of a Red Bluff cop launched investigators on the trail of an ex-Army private who was arrested four days later in New Hampshire.

Neil Wright, 50, said he had received an e-mail from "Mitch Stephens" at americanresistance [at] yahoo.com at about 6 p.m. Friday on his home computer in Lake Havasu City and called police an hour later.

"We apologize to the family and friends of the Police Officer that we killed in Red Bluff, California," stated the e-mail, posted from the Capitol Hill Internet Cafe in Seattle.

The e-mail included a "Declaration of a Renewed American Independence" that is the same as an anti-government diatribe posted Monday under the name Andrew McCrae, who is charged with the ambush murder of Officer David Mobilio on Nov. 19.

More than 20 versions of the declaration -- some with an apology, some with a bragging confession -- were posted on a series left-wing "alternative news" sites from Hawaii to Maine and Georgia under the umbrella indymedia.org.

An investigator in the case, who asked not to be named, confirmed late Wednesday that Wright's tip on Friday night had started police and FBI agents on the trail of the man later identified as McCrae. The investigator also confirmed that FBI agents on Saturday had downloaded the hard drives from the Seattle cafe based on Wright's tip.

"Mr. Wright was very helpful to us in the case," the investigator said. "If you want to measure his assistance, just look at the result. We arrested that same guy."

Wright, a right-wing activist who writes for the conservative Web site freerepublic.com, said he had no idea what crime the sender was referring to when he received the message -- but felt compelled to check it out.

"The death of the police officer there in Red Bluff wasn't national news then," Wright said Wednesday night. "I had no idea what this e-mail was about.

. . . After I read some background on this case, I realized this person was confessing to an unsolved murder. I immediately called police in Red Bluff."

Before the cop shooting your average California street cop didn’t know (or really didn't care) about IMC. Immediately after the so-called “confession” surfaced on this site, Red Bluff PD and others alerted their rank and file during police shift briefings and encouraged their cops, with the blessings of FBI, to saturate SF-IMC with negative-inflammatory comments in an attempt to draw out alleged “subversives.” Beware coppers, police departments everywhere have disgruntled employees on the payroll who are always eager to blow the whistle, even in a one-horse-town like Red Bluff. Another thing, where’s the evidence? Aside from “The Declaration” what else do you have on McCrae? On the day of his arrest McCrae spoke to Sarah Vos of the Concord Monitor. Did he make any incriminating statements that directly implicated him in the crime or did he just talk about his political beliefs? On Wednesday it was reported that cops “hauled boxes of evidence” out of McCrae’s Olympia apartment. Okay, what kind of evidence? The search warrant used in this case is sealed for 90-days and I suspect its origin was Tehema County. With every search warrant served comes a “Return.” A Return is an itemized list of all property seized and its filed with the original search warrant afterwards at the DA’s Office and Superior Court. A copy of the Return was left at McCrae’s apartment as a receipt of all property taken. I wonder what the Return says? Also, with every search warrant comes an Affidavit that reveals the specific facts that cops used to convince a judge why a warrant should be issued. In many instances, the Affiant, or the cop applying for the warrant, will intentionally distort and manipulate facts to mislead the judge into issuing the warrant. It’s all part of the “creative report writing” process that most of them subscribe to, a process they all experienced during their initial indoctrination into the Cop Subculture. In McCrae’s case, the search warrant affidavit should serve as a blueprint to the subsequent raid conducted at his private residence. I suspect the cops will do everything within their power to suppress this information if evidence is weak. I suspect the reason we haven’t heard about any new evidence is because there is none. Finally, if the cops conveniently forgot or failed to leave a copy of the Return or some form of a receipt for the “boxes of evidence hauled away,” they screwed up.

okay - rereading the AP story that was reposted in the comment 3 above makes me realize that I need to get this timeline straight. I'm not entirely sure it makes sense.
--First - Officer Mobilio was sniped a couple weeks ago.
--Last Friday the 22nd, the Arizona man gets the email on his computer and calls FBI an hour later which gets them on the trail of McCrae

--Three days later on Monday - the confession is posted on various imcs as well as several other sorts of political forum sites. Sf.indymedia got the posting on Monday and was indicated as the only confession site in the first round of AP stories about the capture of McCrae on Tuesday. Several commenters here start pointing blame at sf.imc readers for not calling the police.
The confession was supposedly posted from a Capitol Hill, Seattle internet cafe.

--Tuesday 2am - the police catch McCrae in a Holiday Inn in New Hampshire.

Here are my questions -
1. Who posted the confessions on websites on Monday. Was that supposed to be McCrae or someone else who reposted it all over the place? Were the Monday confessions posted from the Seattle Internet cafe, and if not, from where? Also, if not, what were they downloading from the Seattle internet cafe... did he post confessions that no one except the Arizona man noted much earlier on or what?
2. When did he incorporate in New Hampshire? Key to the story is that he became 'Proud and insolent youth, inc' in NH, but did he do that after he went to New Hampshire? If he posted stuff at an internet cafe in Seattle around Thursday or Friday, and it takes at least 8 hours of flying plus airport time minimum for transport from Washington to NH, when did he file these papers? The gov't offices probably weren't open on the weekend. Did he send the papers in from Washington state - assuming he went back to washington after his trip to shoot Officer Mobilio in CA? Would this place McCrae in NH already by the middle of last week?
3. If there are other people involved in spreading the confession on Monday, who are they? I.e. who posted to imc general, and sf.imc? If McCrae was the one who posted his own confession, where was the computer he used in New Hampshire?
by just curious
1) During the standoff, Mickel told a Concord Monitor reporter that he had written a "Declaration of Renewed of American Independence." He also said that he had formed a corporation called Proud and Insolent Youth and incorporated it in New Hampshire. He said that he chose New Hampshire because the state constitution contains the right to revolution.

2) McCrae's incorporation papers, filed in Concord on Nov. 7, list addresses in Loudon, N.H., and Olympia, Wash. The Loudon address was for the local agent of a company that filed the papers.

3) Investigators have not revealed how they tracked Mickel to New Hampshire or identified him as a suspect. Before Mickel was named on a California arrest warrant, investigators had been looking for a red Ford Mustang. It was only later that they tied the car to Mickel, Red Bluff Police Chief Robert Petitt said. The car, which has tinted windows and Washington license plates, has not been found.
http://www.cmonitor.com/stories/news/local2002/mccrae_follow_2002.shtml

4) Wright called the Red Bluff Police Department, and just after 7 p.m., Ron Spurgeon, a Red Bluff police detective, called the Mohabi County Sheriff's office, according to the county's logs. Deputies were sent to Wright's house to pick up paperwork. Wright said that Spurgeon asked him to forward the email and fax it to him. The deputies faxed the paperwork to Spurgeon because Wright did not have a fax, Wright said.

Wright does not know why the email was sent to him. It was also sent to 13 others, but Wright would not release their e-mail addresses. Spurgeon said that the names were part of the investigation and thus confidential.

Petitt would not say whether investigators knew about the declaration before Wright called them. He added that scores of people had contacted the department about it.

"That declaration has taken on a life of its own," he said.

5) Currently, Mickel is a sophomore at Evergreen State College in Olympia, Wash., his mother said. The school is known for its liberal philosophy and does not have majors. His mother said that Mickel studied creative writing.

I was wondering when the Empire would take a swat at us. This is part of the price of authenticity. As Zevon says "You 've got to roll with the punches." Lets get the truth be well.

Also, as far as the timeline, it seems clear that Andrew McCrae could not have posted his confession by himself on sf.indymedia This doesn't necessarily mean anything by itself, because he could have been the one to circulate it around a few days previous to Monday, and then some other individual put it on indymedias on Monday.
but consider, McCrae was taken into custody at 2am Tuesday morning, according to the AP wire stories which I assume used eastern time. The sf.indymedia wire story was posted at 7:39pm Pacific time which would equate to 10:39pm Eastern. A detail of the AP account of the arrest was that there was some sort of standoff at the Holiday Inn in Concord where they negotiated with him to come out, and retrieved a reporter for him to give a statement too. How could he physically have been capable of getting a laptop set up, securing a dialup connection via a hotel, and found a number of websites, figured out their interface, and posted it to about 20 sites all while the police are trying to get him out of the room. It seems far fetched. So this indicates that probably someone else spread the confession... and it even could have been a nonparticipating 3rd party who knew very little about him but somehow encountered the confession and decided to spread it - who could really guess.
This also indicates that the people blaming sf.indymedia for not calling the fbi about a suspicious story are totally wrong because the guy had already been taken into custody 3 hrs later.

on all the action while I was offline for the week.

Sickening to see how inappropriate the mainstream media is - for whatever reason - as they have been exposed to be on this thread. Great work.

More evidence here that mainstream media is essentially useless for any real info and that IMC is becoming more and more important for that. Which may be an interesting blowback in this case if anyone is trying to undermine or discredit IMCs.

I also think it's interesting that these sort of morph criminals are popping up - people who fit an alternative mold in some way are suddenly becoming violent. The fact that they are getting caught so easily, essentially throwing themselves at police - while the anthrax killer, Osama, etc. are impossibly elusive - also seems like a rediculous pattern.

Whatever happened to just blowing everyone away at the office?

This particular killing, to me, would appear to be due to schizophrenia - the age, the intellect, the irrationality, etc. - if it's for real. All those pieces would fit, except for the somewhat Disney aspects of the corporate stuff, and the cop stuff.

But I didn't read through the whole thing, just skimmed, so I'll have to look again.

Glad to see all the timeline info too - thanks.

>>Finally, we are left with no answers, vague denials, and dismissals. Mr. Haswell is either a Bureau Chief that knows almost nothing about important current events, or he is a Bureau Chief that covers up the mis-doings of his own corporate master.

Wrong on both accounts. He's someone who could care less what you have to say. He probably hung up the phone and told anyone that if any other "pinheads" should want to "interview" him, to take a message, he has actual work to do. The AP guy gave more complete answers to you than most would have. Your questions were irrelevant. What you as a small "media" outlet thinks about or has to say about someone like the AP or newsworthy events are insignificant, and he treated you like the low-life you are.

so that it would no longer screw up the wrap. When you a post comment with a long strings of characters all in a row with no spaces between them, it screws up the wrap on the whole thread. Don't screw up the wrap. Screwing up the wrap is rude. Don't do it.

{1) "Indymedia folks are treading on dangerous waters here... "

2) "Individual acts of "political" violence carried out (supposedly) on behalf of a cause, can only hurt said cause."--"Lucas"}

1) what's so dangerous about telling it like it possibly is? the truth is a 'good' thing--living a lie, now them's dangerous waters to walk on.

2) not necessarily (if so, explain how so). if some alleged nut goes and supposedly blows up a federal building because he thinks the feds are oppressive, does the federal establishment involved have to provide a response of "equal" measure? the short answer is no. another question is why would they respond in as violent a manner and would they necessarily be "justified" in doing so? the short answer is not unless the law allows such. (so what is justice?).

also not necessarily because "politically motivated attacks" can be *FAKED* (please feel free to disagree with this point--i wish i could come up with the link
{"Why has the AP suggested the San Francisco IMC was the sole media contact for the suspect?"--"?"}

who knows, maybe *they* want to set up another IMC harass-a-raid; or does this incident remind anyone of the berkeley Reclaim The Streets! party where a person wearing a "black hood" shoved a man into *onlooking* police who instead of persuing the shover, nabbed the shovee?

I'm also not sure that linking an editorial opinion about the AP slant on the news directly to the case of some guy killing a cop in Red Bluff makes much sense ... who cares what that jerk's political opinions were? There are plenty of law-abiding people in the world who want a different kind of news coverage than what AP provides, and the task before us is making a different kind of news coverage possible.

Personally, I'm rather encouraged by the fact that deranged weirdos who commit crimes have been getting caught quickly. Sorry to hear someone write that they are reaching the point where death threats by Internet weirdos are becoming routine. I know everybody wants to stand up for freedom of speech, but when posters are intentionally munging a thread with lots of abusive or threatening stuff, I hope y'all at Indymedia don't feel obligated to put up with it. Hit delete, tell the cops when some posting looks really bad or personally dangerous, but let's move on to the more substantive issues of the day.

A police officer pulled a guy over for speeding and had
the following exchange:

Officer: May I see your driver's license?

Driver: I don't have one. I had it suspended when I got my
5th DUI. (Driving Under the Influence)

Officer: May I see the owner's card for this vehicle?

Driver: It's not my car. I stole it.

Officer: The car is stolen?

Driver: That's right. But come to think of it, I think I
saw the owner's card in the glove box when I was putting
my gun in there.

Officer: There's a gun in the glove box?

Driver: Yes sir. That's where I put it after I shot and
killed the woman who owns this car and stuffed her in the
trunk.

Officer: There's a BODY in the TRUNK?!?!?

Driver: Yes, sir.

Hearing this, the officer immediately called his captain.
The car was quickly surrounded by police, and the captain
approached the driver to handle the tense situation:

Captain: Sir, can I see your license?

Driver: Sure. Here it is.

It was valid.

Captain: Who's car is this?

Driver: It's mine, officer. Here's the registration.

Captain: Could you slowly open your glove box so I can see
if there's a gun in it?

Driver: Yes, sir, but there's no gun in it.

Sure enough, there was nothing in the glove box.

Captain: Would you mind opening your trunk? I was told you
said there's a body in it.

Driver: No problem.

The trunk was opened; no body.

Captain: I don't understand it. The officer who stopped
you said you told him you didn't have a license, stole the
car, had a gun in the glovebox, and that there was a dead
body in the trunk.

Driver: Yeah, I'll bet he told you I was speeding, too.
