Wellstone Conspiracy Theorists Are An Embarrasment to the Left
Now I've been reading a lot of nonsense lately from the tin-foil hat conspiracy theorists, who argue that it those of us who seriously doubt the late Minnesota Senator Paul Wellstone was assassinated by a right-wing cabal taking orders from the White House must disprove he was murdered. This kind of debating tactic by the conspiracy theorists is an act of desperation by some people on the left who only have innuendo and suspicion to support their baseless accusation.

If somebody is going to even hint at such a fatal charge against President George W. Bush, then they had better bring some documentary evidence to the table before opening their mouths. For example, if you're going accuse a prominent citizen of being a wife beater on the stump in the town square, then you should at least have the testimony of a close friend or family member, if you want to be believable. A copy of a police report detailing such an allegation is, of course, tantamount to a smoking gun for the person making the charge of wife beating. It's not up to the doubter among the crowd in the town square, who calls into question the accusation of wife beating by the accuser, to provide evidence disproving the accuser's allegation. The onus is on the accuser, just as the onus is on those who started yelling "foul play" and even "assassination" the day the Wellstone plane crash happened.
Until the Wellstone conspiracy theorists have a credible source for their allegations, like a dissident within the official investigation of the crash or at least an eye witness openly casting doubt on the official explanation of what caused Wellstone's plane to go down that fateful morning of October 25, the entirely reasonable position to take on this issue is that the crash was an accident and nothing more. One of the strengths of the anti-war position regarding the upcoming invasion of Iraq has been outspoken former U.N. officials who spent time on the ground in Iraq and are opposed to such an invasion, like Dennis Halliday and Scott Ritter. Anti-war rallies put on by the usual wing-nut groups who populate the anti-war movement aren't going to convince one-fourth of the collective Congress to vote against a Bush invade Iraq resolution.
I realize it's pointless suggesting to the tin-foil hats that we give an investigation a chance in the case of the Wellstone plane crash. For the believers in the Wellstone conspiracy had already made up their collective minds within hours after it happened. I forsee seemingly endless amounts of energy being spent debating this topic and trying to find some evidence in this caper for years to come. We might even see a movie about the subject by Oliver Stone even more ludicrous than his 1991 JFK production. If any of you tin-foil hats out there are thinking about trying out screenplay writing, then I think you have something to go with here. Maybe old man Stone will buy it from you.
What is leading so many people to publish articles speculating about a Wellstone conspiracy and desiminate them via e-mail under headlines like COMPELLING NEW EVIDENCE WELLSTONE WAS MURDERED? I think Geov Parrish hit the nail on the head in his November 8 Workingforchange.com column: "The instant Wellstone conspiracy theory speculation amongst some usually rational observers suggests how desperate some of those feeling unrepresented in Washington are becomming. Wellstone didn't die because some evil cabal in a secure undisclosed location (i.e. White House) ordered his murder to swing the Senate....the fact that such an idiotic, evidence-free notion can take root so widely is itself a sign of desperation - - and powerlessness."
The final two paragraphs of March Ash's November 10 Truthout.org column is a perfect example of the desperate fatalism Parrish wrote about in his column:
"The precedent set by the death of Wellstone and the subsequent ascension of his opponent Coleman has the gravest of implications. The two men espoused diametrically opposed ideologies. The shift from Wellstone to Coleman is as dramatic as any the U.S. Senate has ever seen. It is a stark and immediate reversal of fortune ushered by the grim reaper.
The classic horror film, 'The Shining' opens with a child haunted by premonitions of violent death. He sees blood in rivers washing down hallways and faces of those long since dead. He keeps repeating over and over a word that no one understands: R-E-D-R-U-M. Only when the ax comes crashing through the bathroom does the meaning of this word become all too clear, as it is viewed scrawled on the wall, reversed in the mirror."
Are things really that bad now? You would think anybody who has even whispered a word of protest against the Bush adminstration is about to be arrested and burned at the stake. I could understand such a sentiment being expressed if Ash's column was datelined September 12, 2001. Relax. The day after S11 we only had one voice in the entire Congress who voted against giving the Bush adminstration a blank check to eventually bomb Afghanistan a month later, and it wasn't Paul Wellstone. It was Barbara Lee, U.S Respresentative from Oakland, and she cruised to an easy victory in her reelection campaign! About one-fourth of the entire Congress voted against the Bush invade Iraq resolution and the judiciary is slowly starting to hack away at the unconstituional, civil liberties trampling PATRIOT Act. We have seen the most viisible anti-war movment since the Gulf War protests more than 11 years ago. Things are a lot better for the left now since the tragic setback of S11 .
Of course, Ash presents no evidence Wellstone was assassinated. Just the same old innuendo and speculation about a right wing cabal assassinating its way into power. From the Rabin assassination in Israel in 1995 to the Carnahan plane crash of 2000 in Missouri to the recent Wellstone plane crash, it's all the work on an evil cabal, insinuates Ash. Predictably, Ash lionizes Wellstone, as if he were a modern reincarnation of Eugene Debs: "They (The Democratic Party leadership) know full well Wellstone had crossed over the line. Wellstone had done what each of them knows they dare not do - challenge the power brokers." Ash forgot to mention the last time there was a significant escalation of the bombing of Iraq under Clinton, Wellstone, like current anti-war hero Jim McDermott of Seattle, became a laptop bomber.
Ash is pushing an evidence-free theory of assassination in the wake of Wellstone's death so it's not surprising he isn't more circumspect about the actual record of the late senator. While mostly laudable, Wellstone's record was far from perfect, except in the minds of those pushing an assassination theory that, absent a hint of evidence, really can only exist in a vapid, childlike imagination.

Has anyone seen anything about the statistical liklihood of this number of crashes over the years?
It would be a complex thing to examine because of the numerous factors, but not impossible to begin to look at.
Oh, but of course, then you'd have to be wearing a tin-foil hat if you even considered looking at numbers.
The thing about articles like these is that they can often stimulate good discussions amongst the people questioning the party line, so thanks for posting!
What exactly is the difference, logical or moral, between believing that so-and-so was murdered or such-and-such an incident was staged by one's favorite "secret forces of evil incarnate Inc." and believing that Iraq is the greatest extant threat to world peace and must be conquered immediately, if one believes it simply because it suits one's political prejudices or peculiar worldview?
And what on earth does "which side are you on" have to do with questions of objective truth?
Mean Auntie Mae
And if these people can't, they are then part of a black ops launched by the KGB in cahoots with the Pakistani secret police to bring down the indymedia board, thus sinking nessie and the other brave posters who dare to question The Establishment And All Its Lies And Those On the Left Who Are Its Abject Servants.
Oh, and by the way, Noam Chomsky is a Secret Senior Vice President of the Chase Manhattan Bank and an apologist for the existing social order.

>Many people quickly recalled other shady "accidents" from the past. Some pointed out by Mike Ruppert:
Rep. Hale Boggs, D-La., was killed in 1972 and had been an outspoken member of the Warren Commission investigating the assassination of JFK. Various sources reported that he had openly expressed doubts about the commission's findings.
Rep. Jerry Litton, D-Mo., was killed while campaigning for a U.S. Senate seat from Missouri nearly two months before the 1976 election. This was exactly the same fate that was to befall Missouri Democratic Gov. Mel Carnahan twenty-four years later.
Rep. Larry McDonald, D-Ga. and the national chairman of the John Birch Society and creator of a private intelligence operation called Western Goals, was killed on KAL 007 after it had mysteriously veered off course on a flight to South Korea and ventured several hundred miles into Soviet territory. The plane was shot down by the Soviet air force. At the time, McDonald's Western Goals was being exposed in an LAPD intelligence scandal linked to massive domestic spying, the CIA and covert operatives like Gen. John Singlaub.
Rep. Larkin Smith, D-Miss. was killed in a private plane crash in 1989. At the time he had been working with veterans of U.S. Army Special Forces looking into the deaths of five Green Beret colonels, all of whom had been connected to a covert CIA drug operation known as Watchtower. [Details of Smith's death are included in the FTW package "The Tyree Papers."]
Secretary of Commerce Ron Brown, a Democrat, was killed in a plane crash in Croatia on April 3, 1996. There are many unresolved mysteries with this incident, not the least of which is a color photograph of a post mortem Brown, which is frequently displayed by comedian/activist Dick Gregory, clearly showing a bullet wound in the back of his skull.
John Tower, a recently retired Republican senator from Texas known for his heavy drinking, was writing a book about the Iran-Contra affair when he was killed in a plane crash in 1991. Tower had reportedly been extremely unhappy when he had been denied an appointment as secretary of defense by President George Herbert Walker Bush. Tower had also been the chairman of a Reagan-appointed independent commission investigating Iran-Contra.<
i find this the most interesting question regarding the wreckage in which sen. wellstone was killed:
>The plane's wings were detached in the crash, but it was the fuselage that burned and disintegrated in an intense fire.
http://www.upi.com/view.cfm?StoryID=20021026-072614-3304r.
Since the Beechcraft's fuselage contains no fuel -- only the wings do -- how did the fuselage burn up, while the wings stayed partially intact, as seen in photos? Why did witnesses "blue-gray" smoke instead of the usual thick black smoke from aviation fuel fires?

as for the tally, it is broken up into two columns: one for the so-called "left", and one for the so-called "right". these terms apply loosely. both columns list people killed, assassinated, shot, almost killed, died in plane crashes, ect. it's also pretty loose. and it only covers the twenty and twenty first centuries. i'm sure there's names in both columns that i have missed, and i apologize for my ignorance. you can do the math and add up the columns your self.
so called "right":
- george wallace
- ronald reagan
- john tower
so called "left"
- john f. kennedy
- martin luther king
- malcolm x
- robert kennedy
- hale boggs
- jerry litton
- larry mcdonald
- larkin smith
- ron brown
- mel carnahan
- paul wellstone
maybe it's nothing. maybe it's something. i'm not here to say.
but nobody should feel ashamed for being suspicious, or asking questions.
the more questions, the less conspiracies.
Is it just a coincidence that all of these people with so much in common all met the same fiery end? i don't think so. mike ruppert doesn't think so. Oh, sure, you can laugh at us all you want, but there are more of us every day, and we're getting stronger....
if a conspiracy is groundless bullshit, your questions can prove it. there goes that conspiracy...
if there's more to a story than simple coincidence, then the right question, at the right time, put to the right person, will prove it. there goes that conspiracy...
you mistake me for someone who has no brain.
no, actually, tin man, i think i had the right person.
Your Mean Auntie Mae
You apparently mistake America for some Third World banana republic. The NTSB report is the only investigation that needs to take place. Beyond that, no additional amount of my tax money should be spent chasing rainbows and as a citizen of this country I will not allow it to happen. Mark my word you will not see a governmental funded investigation take place. I have spoken and it will be done.
smoke mirrors bushit.......hundreds of billions buy truth as reported and votes needed to profit.
wellstone's death was a warning to congress...for any who didn't get it. anthrax
sheep greet biosimilarity and "white noise".

And now DoorMatt enters the fray, forgetting his role of trying to stir up self-hatred and guilt and fucking actually takes a stab at being a conspiracy bug. Damn, a marriage made in counter-revolutionary heaven--nessie and DoorMatt. The former with brains so scrambled from psychotropics and the latter so emasculated by being born with the "wrong" skin color. I wish they'd go the way of Wellstone and let the rest of us to put the final nail in the coffin of conspiracy bugs--who don't give a FUCK if it was 2 or 3 or a million guns on the grassy knoll in Dallas--and get on with the serious, critical business of revolution. Which means a praxis of theory, informed by a critique of political economy, and action. NOT spinning fairy tales about the good guys and bad guys ad nauseum.
Conspiracy bug nessie and self-hating DoorMatt, which side are you on?
Auntie Fannie
Ps. Now we're about to pass "home land security", fascism is here. It's sad, I love this country, and those who are running it, don't give a damn, in fact, they're only concerned with ONE foreign country, and for THAT country, we're going to war, and we're losing OUR freedom.
With everything that happened during Iran-Contra, you expect me to believe there aren't people loyal to the North and Liddy philosophies capable of rigging a small plane to fall out of the sky?
I have drawn no conclusions and I point no direct fingers. But jeesh, it's so f'ing suspicious.
No Way it could be a "conspiracy". heart trouble was the finding.
Not to put too fine a point on it, "editor," but you're a Stalinist piece of shit. Reinstate the post.
Walter Mondale is New world order all the way.
He is a member of The Council on Foreign Relations,
and The Trilateral Commission. So don't think Republican or Democrat(since they are on both sides) think New world Order puppet or not. Then ask why people die, at the just the right time.
Look on the linked page for Mondal you will see
"Walter Mondale - C,T "

"The Council on Foreign Relations...
is the American branch of a society which organized in England... (and)... believes national boundaries should be obliterated and one world rule established."

"The Trilateral Commission...

These are the "nuts" you say talk about the New Workl Order.
I can see for some of you its going to take a long time for you to wake up to the truth!
