1000 March in San Luis Obispo

by Clayton Whitt (cawhitt [at] calpoly.edu)
As part of the national protests against war in Iraq, 1000 people marched in downtown San Luis Obispo.
1000 people marched today in the city of San Luis Obispo, a college town of 40,000 that is 200 miles north of Los Angeles and 10 miles from the coast. Marchers gathered at noon in front of the county government center in downtown SLO and listened to speeches before marching a loop around downtown. Saturday shoppers were treated to the sight of 1000 smiling and sign-bearing marchers of every age group. An event of this scale is very rare for San Luis Obispo, home of California Polytechnic University, a school known throughout California as being a highly conservative business, engineering, and agriculture school.
