At 11:30 a caller reported 60 + people assembling at 24th and Mission, planning to march downtown

At 11:47 AM a caller reported a concentratiion of cops at Mission and Main.

AT 12:14 AM a caller reported that the march has started.
by us
A caller just reported the head of the march is two blocks from Civic Center. He estimated 20,000 +
by us
They just passed 16th. They are very loud. The cops are escorting them and clearing traffic in front of them.

So says an eye witness.
by us
all have barricades in front of them.

The tail end of the march is straggling into Civic Center.

There are less than hundred cops *visible* at Civic Center.

The cops are apparently doing mainly traffic control.

by us
Two new reports say column still marching, very dense. Tail at Beal. Column 1.5-1.75 miles long.

Previous report of tail straggling into CC must be mistaken. Maybe it was a thin place in the march.
by us
People still pouring in.

About 120 visible cops in Civic Center.
by Bush Admirer
If you should be in the city of SF today, and you should encounter these demonstrators, here's what to do:

1/ Point and laugh.

2/ Send out a 'freak alert' on your cell phone.

3/ Take pictures. You can later email these to your friends thereby proving that you really did see a mob of whackos.

4/ Go home and take a bath.
by not one
Shake hands. Now count your fingers.
by Sheepdog
Can't find Bravenet?
Shrub admirer?
Bozo
by us
People are concentrating around anarchist flags, presumably with direct action in mind.
by US
"Tens of thousands"

Says one caller.

Other caller reports 8-10 police horses holding position on Mission between 5th and 6th.
by Sheepdog
You are surrounded, COME OUT WITH
YOUR HANDS UP!
by Bush Admirer
I wonder what it will cost the good citizens of San Francisco to clean up the streets after the rabble rousers have departed?
by us
Civic Center is PACKED, and last of the march has arrived.
by us
at least 50,000 people in and around Civic Center, "conservative estimate."
is about to break off from the main crowd. There are about a dozen motorcycle cops circling, ready to deal with them.
by Bush Admirer
Even if you add up the main participants:

Gays
Homeless people
College kids
Other kids
Easy manipulated losers who've been 'propogandized' by Pacifica Radio

It's hard to believe that would add up to 50,000.

We normally find that 50,000 translates to 1,000 when the adults check the numbers.

To the 'Bush Admirer': the costs for cleaning up the 'litter in the streets' after today's anti-war protest(s) is no where near the costs being generated and inflicted on American citizens by the Bush Administration; not to mention the costs of the carnage that this administration has inflicted so far!

the march went past me for about two hours.
about half that time all 4 lanes of market street
were filled. my educated guess is 50-100 thousand.
is headed down McAllister towards downtown.

The Chron is reporting that there is a police estimate of 42,000. That means 80,000 in real numbers.

700 people.

"Big bunch" of cops right behind them.

Anothe, second group (about 1500) left Civic Center and is coming up Market behind them on the sidewalks.
probably at Third.

Sez caller.

by Bush Admirer
2,000 seems about right.

But if you subtract out the following, what are you left with?

Gays
Homeless people
College kids
Other kids
Easy manipulated losers who've been 'propogandized' by Pacifica Radio

by us
Confrontation pending.

Sez caller.
by us
Still moving. Now headed up Battery, going NE.

Shadowed by police cars on side streets.
by us
towards embarcadero.

cops at davis and broadway. people were running and changing direction. Cops apppear to be getting ready to try to stop the marchers.

Sez caller on scene.

Meanwhile, at Civic Center, AIC speakers have finished. People leaving Civic Center Plaza.
by us
"Cops *not* herding us. We're herding ourselves. The cops are following along."
by us
"About a thousand of us. Cops in riot gear."
by jeff s
sf imc you are great
i'm in miami tryin to get something happening here.
the "news media" in miami is a total blackout.
thanks for the reporting.
peace

"tried to head up Washington, but cops formed line and blocked it off"
by rtechie (rtechie [at] go.com)
I think the message was a little confused by the vaious political agendas people (particularly the speakers) were pursuing. What does Isreal have to do with protesting the war, or Green politics?
by us
Not ready to quit yet. Still boxed in.
by amused
what does israel have to do with a possible war in the middle east? sounds like a total fabrication...!
by political analysis
Iraq is no threat to America. Iraq is a threat to Israel. Israel's master, America, is coming to her aid.
by us
At Davis and B'way in front of Army recruiting station. People giving speeches on bullhorn.
by us
"They're now marching in formation. They're wearing their helmets."
by Us
"No arrests (so far). Cops in riot gear and some on horses. Not trying to trap people. Letting them drift away and disperse."
by us
There's about 150 people left and about 150 cops, plus more on a bus around the corner. People are marching towards Embarcadero.
by us
Demonstrators have dispersed.

Congrats, San Francisco. You behaved admirably.

by Eric Brooks
What Israel has to do with war for control of the Middle East, is that it receives 3 Billion dollars worth of U.S. military support per year to keep it the dominant imperial military and nuclear power in the region, acting as the key strong arm thug on the side of U.S. global hegemony.

The presence of this thug government in the region keeps the balance of power there in such a constant state of tense insecurity that the U.S. has an ongoing excuse to maintain a strong military presence in the region, and thereby dominate who on this planet gets oil, and at what price (always purchased in U.S. dollars.)

Israel uses much of that military support to viciously and continuously break international law invading, oppressing, and consuming with settlements, sovereign Palestinian territory, while murdering and evicting its indigenous population just as Europeans murdered and evicted indigenous peoples in the Americas centuries ago.

Israel is intrinsic to the U.S. designs for global domination of Iraq and the world, and has even threatened to use its own nuclear weapons on Iraq.

Is it any wonder that Arab countries are enraged at Israel and the West? I think not.

In the United Nations, Israel repeatedly supports, (sometimes all by itself) U.S. proposals to make war on Iraq and other Mid-Eastern Countries.

By its very audacious nuclear/military presence, Israel's hawkish imperialist government is the spiked iron right hand of the U.S. totalitarian designs on the planet. Without that threatening spiked fist, a U.S. preemptive strike on any Arab nation would be unthinkable.

Israel's people, just like the people of the U.S. must rise up and take their country back from the evil warmongers and corporate forces which control it, and thereby end the ability of the U.S. to trample Arab countries with impunity.

They must take back their dignity by stopping their government from modeling the U.S. like a foolish child, with its attacks and nuclear threats on others supposedly meant to bring 'security' to its people (while Iraq is very unconvincingly accused of embodying that very same threat.) What vile nonsense this is.

The current State of Israel has -everything- to do with our protest to stop this war...

For Peace

Eric - You've really been drinking the Kool-Aid of the ultra-left!

The facts are:

Good guys: Israel

Bad guys: Palestine (Arafat).

No amount of protesting and whining will change the facts. Once again, the facts are:

Good guys: Israel

Bad guys: Palestine (Arafat).

said like a true simpleton.

Good guys and bad guys you say?
Nothing is ever that simple.
You talk as if there is some shred of truth to that.
Simpleton is right.
