A young man taking part in an Earth First protest near Mount Madonna County Park died Tuesday night after falling about 100 feet from a redwood tree where he had been living.
The man, who remained unidentified as of late Wednesday, is the first tree-sitter in California to die after tumbling from a tree.
“We’re pretty much in shock and trying to decide what to do,” said Tim Ward, a member of the Santa Cruz contingent of Earth First.
Ward said the man was in his mid-20s and had recently come to Santa Cruz. He was homeless, Ward said, before deciding to join a tree-sit protest against Redwood Empire, the San Jose-based firm now logging the approximately 50-acre site.
“We’ve been trying to find out what caused him to fall,” Ward said.
He said Earth First protesters are all trained “how to climb safely and how to rappel and how to stay fed and sanitary.” They’re also told to stay on a tether while in the trees, but for some reason the man was untethered, Ward said.
Redwood Empire on Wednesday issued a statement saying that employees were saddened by the news. The company said a logging crew and foresters rushed to the scene of the accident shortly before nightfall Tuesday. The crew had heard the man moaning and went to investigate.
Crew members and foresters comforted the man, who told his rescuers he didn’t know why he had fallen, before emergency medical crews arrived. He was transported by ambulance, then transferred to a helicopter and flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center.
Hospital spokesman Matt Schenone said the man’s heart stopped when he was being transported in the helicopter. Doctors tried to re-start his heart when he arrived at the hospital shortly before 10 p.m., but he was pronounced dead minutes later.
His body was sent to the coroner’s office, where medical examiners on Wednesday night were trying to determine the exact cause of death as well as the man’s identity.
Earth First Santa Cruz had brought plywood platforms, buckets, ropes, food, water and other supplies to set up the protest in mid-August as logging crews prepared to move in. From 15 to 20 activists took turns occupying four trees, named Esperanza, Free, Critter and Fresco, as loggers worked around the protesters.
The scene of the accident was in the same area where the group had set up the first tree-sitting protest in Santa Cruz County’s history in June 2000.
The area has been the subject of a long-running dispute. Environmentalists and county officials contend the state Department of Forestry and Fire Protection is too lenient with loggers. They argue that the logging of redwoods and Douglas fir will defile a creek that runs through the property and will upset the balance of the habitat. Redwood Empire and department officials, however, say the logging is environmentally sound.
On the eve of the first anniversary of its aerial “village” near Mount Madonna, Earth First’s attempt to establish a large tree-sitting operation near Boulder Creek was marred by the serious injury of a young woman. Jenna Griffith, then 20, who uses the forest name “Sparrow,” was injured when she fell about 30 feet from a tree and hit her head on a redwood stump. She is now fully recovered.

“This tragic accident should not have happened,” Redwood Empire’s statement said of Tuesday night’s accident. “The man and others were illegally trespassing upon private property for which there is a state-approved harvest for second-growth trees.”
Redwood Empire officials have said they were surprised by the protest because the “minor concerns” expressed during public hearings had been addressed by the company.
“More surprising is the apparent lack of training and disregard for safety considerations by these tree-sitters and their supporters, which would result in an untethered person falling from a tree,” the statement said.
The first Earth First tree-sitter killed in California during a tree-sit protest was in September 1998 in Humboldt County, where David “Gypsy” Chain was killed by a tree felled by a logger.
In April, a tree-sitter in the Mount Hood National Forest in Oregon fell from a tree and later died.

A tree-sitter in the Ramsey Gulch area of the Santa Cruz Mountains died late Tuesday night, early Wednesday am after falling 100 feet from his
platform in a nearly mature 100 year old redwood he was protecting from Redwood Empire Logging.
The sitter, who's name is only known as Nia, Rob, or Robin said that he had traveled down from the Mattole Forest area in Humboldt County within just
the last few days and said that he wanted to go up right away. He's displayed solid knowledge of climbing. He had a cell phone and a walkie
talkie in the tree with him.
The tree sit was in an active logging operation being cut by Redwood Empire Logging. As loggers were going home for the day they cut they stopped for
some reason and turned their truck engine off. It was then that they heard moaning. The sitter was found with a broken arm and leg and was later found to have suffered severe internal injuries. He was wearing no
harness, though he had one in the tree with him. The loggers called the Sheriff and stayed with the sitter. Sheriffs had the tree-sitter helicoptered to Valley Medical Center in Santa Clara where he died either
late Tuesday night or early Wednesday morning shortly after being admitted.
The tree-sit had been up for two months and "Nia" was its third sitter, following Ayala and Quicksilver. The platform was 4' x 6' in dimension. The weather was a bit cloudy but the was no rain or windy conditions.
The legal name of the sitter is unknown at this time and his family has not been notified. If anyone can be of assistance, please contact us.

I think these Earth First sitters are starting to really piss off the trees. That's two they've spit out in less than a year.
My regrets got out to the family and friends.

first of all we don't use any nails when attaching the platform to a tree. we use ropes that are removable if and when a tree is saved. any sits that i have been involved with have had some sort of communication with other people. that may be in the form of walkie talkies or possibly a cell phone. i don't know what sort of system they had set up in santa cruz but even if he had some means of communication when falling it may have stayed in the tree or been lost. lastly we are not employees we all choose to do what we do of our own free will.

Conflicting accounts are surfacing on the circumstances leading to the man's death. Loggers who saw him on the ground said he was not wearing a harness. According to a man who spoke to Bryan, who was conscious and breathing after the fall, Bryan spoke of a problem with some netting.
But "as far as we know, there was no netting in the tree at all," Earth First! spokesman Dennis Davie said. "We don't have any idea (what went wrong). It is one of those situations where we may never know."
The California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, which went to the man's aid, would not comment about the incident. The man was part of
an organized protest against logging in the Ramsey Gulch area above Corralitos. Davie said the man spoke of being an experienced rock climber, and climbed the tree, which the activists call "Esperanza," quickly and
confidently. He was in the tree just 12 hours prior to the accident.
Earth First! is firming up plans for an Oct. 19 memorial, but has yet to set a location or time.

When it is so easy to disregard human life and the environment we are all in serious danger. It seems we are very close to another inflection point in history, every one more catastrophic than the previous. Fundamentalism of all kinds is beginning to take over. There is no point in reasoning with those that are unwilling to listen. These same ones who are upset that some are joking about this incident would be the _first_ ones who would be making jokes if a PL corporate officer were to die in some tragic manner. Have no doubts that is the case. Don't make fun of the tree climber who fell, but its OK to make fun of the PL exec who was killed. As humans we should be doing what we can to look after each other. Any argument that creates sides and factions is detrimental to the fabric of our culture. Bankers, landlords, and such, are human. While they may profit at times at the expense of others, labeling them parasites is unethical. A person is a person, and no ethical conflict should be allowed to get in the way of that. So I am in the woods today marking trees for cut and I finally realize how crazy the whole reality of the issue is. These trees are really dangerous. People are willing to risk their lives way up in the canopy of these giant trees.
I realized that I was in large part to blame. If I had only been working faster and harder to remove these hazards to human life, two innocent people would still be alive.
So tomorrow I am going to work with a new dedication and resolve. I promise to make the forest save for all by removing any tree that may pose a threat to humanity.

You probably get your opinions from the news, Mr. Toad.
Many news reports about the World Trade Center and Afghanistan find a way to slip in a remark about the dead people.
For example:
“U.S. warplanes bombed a village in Afghanistan today that was believed to be a hideout for the terrorist group that attacked the World Trade Center, which killed more than 3000 people.”
This is a not very subtle attempt at manipulation. Is the US government and/or media worried that we will stop hating the Arabs?
Or does President Bush want to distract us from our economic problems or the Enron scandal?
Whatever the reason, we have some examples of how journalism may look in the future, if this practice is continued.
"Today in Congress, President Bush, an unskilled alcoholic who was born into wealth, announced a proposal to eliminate the taxes that rich children pay on inheritances and trust funds."
"President Bush, who is suspected of being a heavy cocaine user until recently, refused to answer reporters' questions on why his brother's wife did not get in trouble for smuggling nearly three-quarters of a million dollars' worth of items into America without paying customs tax."
"The first U.S. casualty in Afghanistan worked for the CIA, a group of psychotic, unemployable losers who believe they are characters in a James Bond movie."
"Each year American taxpayers give several billion dollars to the CIA, a terrorist organization that smuggles weapons around the world and starts revolutions in a misguided attempt to make the world a better place."
"Prime Minister Tony Blair of Britain, a nation that since 1945 has been doing whatever America asks regardless of whether it makes any sense, announced that Britain would blindly follow America into Afghanistan without questioning why."
"In a recent poll of British adults, a group of people who have been unable to think for themselves since 1945, 67% said they believe President Bush is an idiot but they want to obey his every desire anyway."

UPI News- The invesigation into the death of a young activist has turned up no new facts. Saftey investigators believe the young man fell some 100 feet when he accidentaly slipped from his tree perch and plunged to his death. The ambulance driver who treated the man was quoted as saying,"100 feet,No Shit!" A fellow activist who goes by the name snowflake was herself roughly 150 yards away in her own tree perch when Naya (real name robin),plunged to the ground."I heard some rustling,then a loud WHOOOPS....IEEEEEEEEYAAAAAAAAAAA,then a very load THUD,snowflake told reporters. When asked if Naya could talk after he hit the ground, snowflake said, "not very well, he could only sort of wisper, but I do remember him telling the medic that was strapping him into the gurney not to let those other ass-holes steal any of his shit."
You are fighting to save trees but if you look at it you are full of crap. first of all you are sitting in a tree on a WOODEN platform lets think about were that came from. doesn't wood come from trees yes i believe it does. aren't you exagerating a little to much. and with a name like naya no wonder God helped him fall out of the tree.
It seems we have terrorism right in our own back yard? Cutting down redwoods? Haven't we learned anything in over 100 years of "democracy" other than how to convert nature’s wonders and beauties into profit for investors? If J. Muer were alive today, if T. Roosevelt were alive today, I can imagine what they might both agree to, and that is the government’s loss of control over big money. Indeed, it seems that today "big money" and "government" are one and the same. Greedy "robber barons" are alive and well and many live in the Fortress known as the US Congress! They stay there by pretending to agree with "term limits" all the while secretly accepting the very donations that will keep them in office. I have seen the forests of our nation, and I know some of the history of what our country had before "capitalism" made its mark on our forest reserves. Clear cutting still goes on, strip mining still goes on, and the money continues to flow into those "hollow legs" of politicians that measure personal success by how wealthy they are. Lip service is cheap; destruction of natural resources goes on like a lawyer’s filibuster at a speech contest. People that can help to stop mass destruction of our planet must do so, otherwise being "safe" in an environment devoid of nature’s complexities and ecosystems is its own jail cell. We can do this, but most of the time help comes from the local inhabitants. Locals must become nationally tied and elected officials must be held accountable. Don't let the robber barons pay lip service to the ecology, for we are the patriarch’s to future generations.
Do we want trees? Do we need trees? How about people? How about any other life form? What we want and need like and dont like.... all of our own personal "opinions" matter none in the face of the destruction of our creator. THE EARTH IS THE LORD AND THE FULLNESS THEREOF. What does this mean? We are atoms that origionated within a star. God created us IN HIS IMAGE. All of this means that the only god is existence, nature or whatever you care to call it. We are GOD if god truly created us in His Image. We are a reflection of the infinite variability of Creation/Creator. Fool yourself onto the path of destrucion if you wish BUT be warned! The path of knowledge truth and wisdom although more challenging than ignorance is the one we must take for survivals sake. The actions we must take: ascending into the habitat of the canopy. This is indeed a very CRUDE method. What, putting your own life at stake to save one tree or perhaps even ten. BUT, we who defend Mother Earths' right to life see beyond our own lives. We know that if we die in service of creation we have not ceased to part of that Creation. These wicked fear tactics will not stop those who are called to defend life on this living sphere. I will not give in to weakness. I will not give in to fear. I knoe trees, loggers, tree sitters and everything in between can grow together harmoniously, and I hope we do. We all must keep an eye on this wicked energy wherever it creeps in...We with love must combat hatred with love and not allow the hate to influence We and our dialouge. Compassion. You dont know me on a level of human interaction, but with compassion we may concieve eachother to be equal. Although you dont know me perhaps you could feel compassion for me. I have love and compassion for you and all and all your loved ones, for all your family. Would you have compassion for me as a living being? Or this Planet? Would you have compassion for me when I confide that I have survived a 14cm tumor in my chest encroaching my heart? Now would you feel love for me? I have lost loved ones. May thier bleesed souls be at peace, as well as all living and gone ancestors. When you tune your prayer in with all Prayers ever prayed, then and only then will our collective prayers be answered. Peace and healing to all.
