Support Senate Filibuster of Iraq War

by ananda
This is a call for support of Senator Byrd's proposal to filibuster the resolution to approve US invasion of Iraq without UN support. This post includes e-mail addresses not present in previous posts.
Citizens of America,

In the next few days, Congress is scheduled to vote on whether to grant George Bush sole power to declare war on Iraq. The whole world and the U.N. are nervously watching this decision.

Recent national polls show that most Americans do not support the rush to war against Iraq.

In spite of this lack of support for the war, our Congress is apparently ready to approve such a war. With the pressure of national elections nearing, the U.N. vote pending, and only a few days before the congressional recess, this pivotal decision in U.S. history may slip by without debate. One of the safeguards in our Constitution for such rash decision making is the filibuster.

Many people feel torn or uneasy about the global consequences of going to war with Iraq, but they have found these opinions difficult to voice. In the last four days more and more brave public figures have begun raising U.S. and world concerns about this issue. They have offered hope that at least one Senator will represent the true public sentiment.

Still, time is running out. Once this upcoming vote has been passed, the decision will be irreversible. A filibuster is the only chance we have to avoid a rash decision. This tactic has worked in the past -- just last week, the threat of filibuster in the Senate caused the controversial Homeland Security Bill to be delayed for more careful consideration.

If you are one of the many people who are torn on this issue, it is essential that you support any Senator who has shown concern about the vague language of this bill. It only takes one Senator to filibuster and to represent the many who feel uncomfortable about the timing and ramifications of this bill.

Below you will find a list of Senators who have already begun to voice the country's concerns about this bill. You can call their office between 9am and 6pm Eastern Standard Time (Mon-Fri), or email anytime!

You do not have to be a constituent. Simply ask them to organize a filibuster on the vote on Iraq.

If no filibuster is enacted it "appears likely that there will be at least 70 or 80 votes in the Senate to give the President authority to attack Iraq." This bill will affect everyone's lives for years to come. As we have learned from history, once wars begin they are nearly impossible to stop.
