The Intifada in Numbers

Sunday, September 29 2002 @ 05:41 PM GMT

RAMALLAH (Palestine Monitor) - Yesterday marked the second year of
the current Palestinian uprising against the Israeli occupation of
the Palestinian territories and the repression of the Palestinian
people.

During the last two years, the Israeli response to the Palestinian
people’s struggle for internationally recognized right to
self-determination and towards an end to the Israeli colonization of
their land has grown increasingly violent and aggressive.

In September 2000, Palestinians were met by Israeli soldiers firing
rubber-coated-metal bullets and live ammunition, today nearly all
the West Bank towns have been fully ‘re-occupied’ by the Israeli
army and have been placed under strict military-enforced curfew.

In Gaza, the population is bracing itself for an imminent
reoccupation.

More than 1,914 Palestinians have been killed by Israeli soldiers,
settlers or police since September 2000. Also counted among these
are those who died as a direct result of the Israeli occupation,
i.e. those denied access to life saving medical treatment when
ambulances were stopped and turned away at checkpoints, and the
unborn babies who died when their mothers could not reach hospital
because of closure or curfew:

· 71 Palestinians have died after being prevented access to medial
treatment, 21 of those were children, 13 were newborn babies.

· 169 have died in extra judicial assassination attacks, of these 31
were bystanders at the time and 44 were “unintended” victims killed
as they were with the victim. 22 were children.

· 22.5% were aged 18 or younger, i.e one out of every five killed

· 60% were shot with live ammunition

· 85% were civilians or not involved in any violent action or attack
at the time they were killed

· 17 medical personnel were killed while on duty

An estimated 41,000 Palestinians have been injured in the same
period: 2,500 of those are permanently disabled, 500 of whom are
children

The prolonged Israeli closure of the Occupied Territories has
destroyed the Palestinian economy and lead to serious damage to
infrastructure and civil society:

· 75 % of the Palestinian population live in poverty (less than US$
2 per day) and unemployment has reached 65%.

· 30% of children under 5 years of age suffer from chronic
malnutrition, 21 % from acute malnutrition

· 45% of children under 5 and 48% of women of childbearing age
suffer from moderate to mild anemia

· During the first 15 months of the Intifada the occupation caused
physical damage amounting to US$ 305 million. During the month long
invasion in March and April 2002, the Israeli army destroyed and
looted US$ 361 million worth of property

This violent and dangerous occupation regime is now being met by a
popular non-violent resistance, including peaceful marches in the
streets with people protesting the three-month long curfew regime,
the siege and the continued killing of innocent people.

Do you expect us the trust the numbers that say:

" 85% were civilians or not involved in any violent action or attack at the time they were killed "

This is a simple lie, most those who killed were Military Aged Man involved in attcks against Israelis

There are actually 3 times ! more Israel women killed than palestinians women. There are actually 2.5 times more Israeli man age over 40 that were killed than palestinian man over 40 (these are actual numbers - in % the ratio is even higher) The reason for this is simpe while the palestinian TARGET civilians the Israeli do not TARGET civilians they target militants.

What is also inluded in the infaled number is the 212 palestinian killed BY THEIR OWN people because they were SUSPECTED as collabraotors with israel - talk aboyt EXTRA JUDICIAL KILLING and palestinian lead the world in this crime as well as in TARGETING civilians.

This uncanny ability to ignore facts that are smacking you in the face seems to be a characteristic ailment of those supporting Israeli expansionism.

Several dozen Palestinian Muslims at Jerusalem's Temple Mount used rocks to attack Israeli policemen who were guarding the Western Wall, a Jewish holy site. Police entered al-Haram al-Sharif, the "grand mosque compound" on the Temple Mount, and dispersed the attackers.

So how does Reuters headline the story? "Israeli Police Drive Protesters From Muslim Shrine."

I wonder if it also includes the Palestinians killed when their bombs exploded prematurely or were detonated for whatever reason in the vacinity of Palestinian civilians.

This is invariably the lie Israelis give out whenever they murder civilians.

You can fool some of the people all the time and you can fool all the people some of the time, but you can't fool all the people all the time.

The Israeli army initially stated that Baha was carrying a bomb at the time of his assassination. This is not true. It does however prove that the shot was fired to kill, not to stun or frighten but to kill. The statement then changed to accuse Baha of carrying a molotov cocktail.

This was supposed to have exploded in his hand. Setting him on fire and killing him. 'It was his fault'. This is what the IDF said about the boy they shot in the head in Balata the night before. Seventeen-years-old. He died when the ambulance carrying him was refused entry through a checkpoint to the hospital. A double killing. They said he killed himself, shot himself. This a common statement released after the Army murders people here. All armies and police do it. Blame and demonise the victim.

328 children have been murdered by the Israeli army or armed settlers since September 2000.

328 children have been murdered by the Israeli army or armed settlers since September 2000.

Since the beginning of the current intifada, our Website has published lists containing the names of all individuals (Israeli, Palestinian, and foreign) who were killed during the violence. - http://www.btselem.org/English/Statistics/index.asp

The lists include the name of the person killed, whether they were civilians or members of the security forces, their age, place of residence, date and place of death, and who killed them. Where B'Tselem is certain about the circumstances surrounding the death, they are also listed.

B'Tselem emphasizes that the inclusion of a person's name in this list does not mean that the death resulted from a human rights violation or that the deceased did not him/herself violate the rights of others. The lists constitute a comprehensive list of persons who were killed during the al-Aqsa intifada, and should be understood solely on this basis.

Given the scope and complexity of events, B'Tselem is unable to issue a definitive conclusion regarding every incident in which a person was killed. Firstly, the large number of cases makes it impossible for us to conduct an exhaustive investigation into every instance in which persons were killed.

Secondly, even in cases that we investigate, it is not always possible to determine unequivocally the actual circumstances. For example, it is not always clear if the person killed was armed or was near an armed individual, whether IDF soldiers' lives were in jeopardy, and the like.

Furthermore, as an information center, B'Tselem faces the problem of disinformation - supplied by both sides - regarding the circumstances of the deaths of many of the persons killed during the current events. An example is the case in which Palestinians contended that, in October 2000, Israeli civilians tortured and killed a Palestinian civilian. In investigating the matter, we obtained the assistance of pathologists from the United States associated with Physicians for Human Rights, who found that the person had most likely died in a traffic accident. - http://www.phrusa.org/research/forensics/israel/Israel_accident_2.html

In another case, the IDF Spokesperson issued an official statement which contended that the soldier who killed a Palestinian civilian in Beit Omer, Hebron District, in November 2000, had shot him in self-defense after the man tried to snatch the soldier's weapon. B'Tselem's thorough research revealed that the claim was false. In fact, the Palestinian was shot following a verbal argument with the soldier. During the argument, the soldier aimed his weapon at the Palestinian's head and pulled the trigger. B'Tselem has not yet received the results of the Military Police's investigation of the matter. - http://www.idf.il/english/announcements/2000/november/16.stm

For these reasons, the circumstances of death are not listed in most of the cases. B'Tselem endeavors to investigate these circumstances, and the findings are published, in part, in our reports. Persons interested in studying the complete data in our possession, are welcome to visit our offices, upon prior coordination.
--"This is a simple lie, most those who killed were Military Aged Man involved in attcks against Israelis "

Considering Israelis (soldiers and settlers) have killed children of all ages, it would be interesting to know what they mean by "Military Aged Man." Is a fourteen year old boy a "Military Aged Man"? What about four or five year old girls?

-- "I wonder if it also includes the Palestinians killed when their bombs exploded prematurely..."

That's what Israel said about fourteen year old Baha who was killed in full view of ISM activists. The Israelis first said that he was a suicide bomber than changed the story to say that he was killed from a molotov cocktail he was holding.

In fact, however, and with ISM witnesses at his side, an Israeli soldier from over 120 meters away took careful aim at him and shot him dead on purpose.

Even this, however, is lied about and obfuscated to try to turn the murderers into the victims.

the killing of fourteen year old Baha is a daily occurrence most of the others not being witnessed by anyone other than Palestinians.

The average death toll is about two to three Palestinians killed per day (1900 dead divided by 700 days).

In fact, during the last six-week period of "relative quiet" (as the US media likes to call it), 71 Palestinians were killed and no Israelis (again around two to three Palestinians QUIETLY killed per day without any fuss at all about it in the media of the very people who PAY for it all). But when an Israeli is killed or injured, then that "relative quiet" is broken and we get to hear the names and life stories of all those dead and injured. I think that is appropriate -- i.e. humanizing the victims. But when the same is not done for the far greater number of Palestinian civilian killed or injured, then this has to be recognized for what it is -- propaganda designed to keep Americans supporting Israel and paying for its occupation to the tune of five or so billion per year.
Did you not hear about the Palestinian that killed the Israeli mother and 2 children while she was reading her children a bedtime story? How can you be so one-sided? Both sides need to stop all this killing. They are both equally responsible. Any sane person could not put the blame on one or the other in this horrible situation. I do always hear, though, when the Israelis kill, they are doing it in retaliation. And this has always been the history of this situation. Considering the fact that Israelis could bomb all of the Palestinians in one day if they wanted to, I think they're being very fair. If the shoe were on the other foot, there's no doubt in my mind, the Israelis would all be dead. There will never be peace as long as the Palestinians do not admit they are at fault, too.
If you are concerned about Israeli deaths, then you would support the Palestinians' call for International troops to be stationed there as a buffer between the two peoples. The Israeli government rejected this. Why do you think that is?

--"They are both equally responsible. Any sane person could not put the blame on one or the other in this horrible situation."

The Israelis are the ones totally responsible for this situation. How can you put the blame on a people that is being systematically uprooted, dispossessed, and randomly killed. Israel is conducting a war against civilians and has been since its inception. Palestinians have basically surrendered at this point but Israel refuses to recognize that surrender because that might mean that they could no longer steal their land. Thus they are forcing this conflict to continue and are responsible for it. I believe it's not only unjust but immoral to blame the main victims here who are the Palestinians -- which is what has been done for so long, basically standing reality on its head with Israelis considered the main victims.

--"I do always hear, though, when the Israelis kill, they are doing it in retaliation. And this has always been the history of this situation."

The Palestinians say the same, of course, that there killings are in retaliation for Israelis killing of Palestinian civilians including children. And considering that Israel has forced this entire conflict on the Palestinians, they are more responsible for any civilian deaths, including their own.
