Thank you all for what you are doing to preserve the feeble few square miles of wilderness we have left in this country! To all logers and PL employees and anyone who thinks this is outlandish and 'terrorist' behaviour: don't realize too late what these people are trying to do! No one hates you! We must all stand together to make it into the future! Save Trees! Save People!
by Maul
Witchdoctor,
A wilderness is an unsettled or uncultivated region, nothing like where this protest took place. This protest was located along side greenwood height rd. which be no means is unsettled. Most of PL’s land can be considered to have been already put under cultivation because of past logging which aloud for our present stands of trees (also know as second growth, which judging from the photo is what the demonstrators are protesting). By that reasoning none of the land that has been harvested in prior years or contains settlements can be deemed wilderness. If you want wilderness go to the Trinity Alps. As for the loggers and PL employees you are correct in saying that nobody hates them, in fact many people support and stand behind them and their work. Harvest Trees! Grow Trees!
by Rio
So Maul,
Are you suggesting that PL should clearcut just because these are second growth trees, causing much damage to the steep hillsides and stream beds? When does the land get a chance to heal. The workers that were halted were mostly Mexican and aren't even local. PL imports 100% of their logging workforce. This company isn't sustainable because they overlog (not allowing small trees to grow big enough), use herbicides that cause water and land contamination, wipe out species diversification, cause landslides, turn forests into tree farms, don't use local labor and clearcut which causes desertification.
MAXXAM is a corrupt corporation that is raping this community and the land. Open your eyes.

Rio,
What do you have against Mexicans?
by freshwater resident
Speedy G,

Actually, those latino's were in their boss's words "his boys". Ed Lewis the violent sadistic hot header looser said that. maybe i'm wrong, but i don't think this issue is about the ethnicity of the workers, it was a poor attempt at explaining that PL no longer contributes to this community. PL no longer employs logger. They contract out their piecemeal work. I think it's great personally if folks can find work, go for it. However, if your going to come in and trash my watershed at the expense of your below wage job, please back off. Go work somewhere else or join the IWW and demand a fair wage and jobs into perputuity. But not in this watershed under illegal operations which causes increased flooding a lowering of the local property values. And yes at the time of this writing, PL has been illegally operating since August 29, 2002 when the judge issued a stay on all operations which fall under the SYP and HCP. Bullying the community doesn't work. The community isn't entirely opposed to shutting down PL, but they seem bent on doing it to themselves, by blatently disregarding the judge's latest ruling and by allowing for the corporate hostile takeover to have taken place 15 yrs ago.
by Speedy G
Freshwater resident,

True PL no longer employs its own logging crews, but they do employ local logging contractors that depend upon local workers (some may be Hispanic, yet many are not, although that is hardly the point). These logging contractors are valuable part of the Humboldt economy, and for you to state that they earn below wage just shows your lack of knowledge or desire to research the subject in detail. Secondly you refer to the watershed as “my” watershed, implying that you “own” part of the watershed. Well PL “owns” a great deal more of that watershed, has it ever occurred to you that what you and many protesters are doing is having an affect on their property values or are you only concerned about yours? Finally you are only interpreting the court ruling the way you wish to have it heard. Due to the unclear language and misinterpretations from both sides of the legal battle no clear ruling can be found. Until the judges states his exacts intentions please stay out of the legal arena.
by Maul
Rio,
How big is big enough in order for PL to log? How big is too big for PL to cut? To you have any viable proof that PL does any of the things you accuse them of, especially the desertification (maybe you spotted a cacti on their land or vast areas of sand dunes or how about one of the Great Pyramids)?

the judge clearly stated during the court hearings that he meant his order to apply to logging operations. his stay has language within it that balances the companies needs against the public trust. i'll stick my nose in the court rulings all i want too. his ruling has gotten clearer and clearer since this was dicsussed in court. logging operations are stayed. period. this is a no brainer. PL, DFG and CDF just don't want to believe it.
by Speedy G
Freshy,
Perhaps it is just the opponents of logging that just don’t want to believe that logging can still occur on pre approved plans. You may have been to busy sticking you nose in the court rulings that you couldn’t see over it to clearly read the ruling.

from times-standard.com

The judge did grant PL six logging plans the company believes are in the process of being approved by the California Department of Forestry, the other defendant in the case. But these plans -- in several watersheds -- are not sufficient to keep the company up and running through the year, Branham said.
....................
CDF is proceeding to approve the six logging plans exempted from Golden's stay, but is not working on other harvest plans, said CDF Chief Counsel Norm Hill.

ya know what...anyone can watch the trial. anyone can assist in the gathering of evidence. heck maybe it's time to get an amiscus brief filed on behlaf of the public on this one....

Did you see the picture of the clear cut? The forest is being raped, and sold, and destroyed. These trees will not be here unless something is done now.! Redwood trees only grow in two places in the whole world, and Northern California is one of them! we can not allow this horror to continue. If anyone knopws of any information regarding clearcuts in Southern humboldt, that is going on right now, please contact me. I want to get involved.

what's that cartoon? Is that standard format for conservative "facts"? LOL!!!! No wonder they have such a twisted impression of reality and can't get accepted into any shools!

It's your typical, you must be stupid,

self satisfied ignorance displayed by

I admire the people who risk their safety to seflessly protect the environment from those who seek to destroy it. We need to look out for nature as much as we need to look out for our fellow man. As CHIEF SEATTLE once said, "Those who spit upon the earth spit upon themselves."
