Why have a hidden and a non-existent file?

by a humble question
what is the purpose of a hidden file?
For whose benefit is it?

why can't we just see what others have to say.

who is protecting us and from what?

where do you get off?

who appiointed you ?

I'm sure nobody appointed anyone on the SF IMC editorial staff. Like all other IMCs, they volunteered. I'm sure thty are open to anyone who wants to PARTICIPATE and get involved.

If all you want to do is whine, they are likely to not find that very compelling.

He is a liar. The flag wasn't banned. There were flags everywhere at the 9/11 memorial. I was there. The school passed out flag pins to everyone, and they had flags on the podium and everyone sang the star spangled banner. Lying violates a commandment from god.
He is repeating the original falsehood from Steve Sexton - the biased Dailycal editor who pushed this stuff with David Horowitz.

Statement of Chancellor Robert M. Berdahl
September 5, 2002 press conference

I have called this press conference to set the record straight in response to the outrageous allegations published by The California Patriot, a student journal, and picked up by the wire services around the country.

Transcript of questions asked of the chancellor and his responses at the press conference.

Excerpt:

Reporter: The article (in the student journal, The California Patriot) suggests that things like the Star Spangled Banner, God Bless America and the flag just might be banned by the University.

Berdahl: That's absolutely absurd. We sing the Star Spangled Banner frequently on this campus.

The central allegation of The California Patriot is that the University of California, Berkeley is unpatriotic in commemorating the events of September 11. This allegation is wrong. This allegation is an insult to everyone at this University. More importantly, this allegation is disrespectful to the thousands who lost their lives and disrespectful to the countless heroes who worked valiantly to save lives on that day. These American heroes inspired all of us and renewed our faith in the American spirit.

We planned next week?s memorial service to be consistent with the spirit and substance of the memorial service we organized last year on September 17. At that service 15,000 people joined in thoughtful reflection. No one suggested that that event was unpatriotic or un-American. In fact, quite the opposite was true.

The noon events planned for this September 11 are to be a memorial, also marked by contemplative music and prayerful thought to honor those murdered a year ago. We believe it would be a disservice to those who died to allow this memorial to become a political rally of any kind, for any purpose. This is where we differ with The California Patriot. The California Patriot, not the University, is trying to turn this into a political event.
I will not allow the quiet moments from noon until 12:30 PM -- moments of prayer, grief, mourning, and reflection -- I will not allow these sacred moments to be misused for political purposes. And I deeply resent the implication that by planning this service in this way, we are unpatriotic. There is nothing more patriotic and American than honoring those lost in this horror.

After the memorial service is completed, at 12:30 PM, the microphone on Sproul Plaza will be open to people who wish to express their thoughts. An open microphone will also be available on Sproul Plaza for two hours later that afternoon. There will be ample opportunity for all to express their grief, their mourning, or their political sentiments, as was the case on Sproul Plaza a year ago.

Thank you.

after all these years berkeley decides to go on the defence? i find it hard to accept myself. afterall they have prided themselves in their stance. they ate up the publicity. maybe they are changing their minds. maybe benefactors are pulling out.
by just wondering
Be specific. Give examples. Refer to the new guidelines recently posted.

One-uppers versus survival

Jewish Law prohibits the writing of the Creator's name out in full. The
spelling below is not intended to be disrespectful, particulary given this
column's topic --- editor.

Among the many commemorations of the September 11th anniversary,
the one at Berkeley was unique. The American flag was banned because
it might offend people from other countries. "The Star Spangled Banner"
was banned because it was considered too militaristic, while "G-d Bless
America" was not regarded as an acceptable substitute because G-d is
politically incorrect in Berkeley.

This might all be just an incidental sidelight on the silliness of
Berkeley, except that such attitudes are far more widespread among
academics, the literati, and the glitterati. Too often such attitudes are
based on nothing more substantial than a desire to be part of the
self-anointed elite who are one-up on everyone else.

Being one-up is so important to some people that it colors the way they
see every issue and can even over-ride concern for their own safety in a
world of international terrorism. One of the ways of being one-up is to
jump on the bandwagon of the latest fads, like being non-judgmental or
supporting multiculturalism and deconstruction. These clever sophistries
are the self-indulgences of sheltered and comfortable people.

Does anyone suffering the agonies of some terrible disease question
whether what he is experiencing is real or just a matter of "perceptions"
that are "socially constructed"? Does a mother whose child has died in her
arms question whether that is of any greater significance than swatting a
mosquito? Do people who risk their lives trying to escape from some brutal
dictatorship and reach American soil regard all cultures as "equally
valid"?

People can define things inside their own heads any way they want to. It
is only when they pretend to be talking about things outside their heads,
in the real world, that they spread intellectual confusion and social
chaos. Many a foolish policy is based on trying to make the real world
match the picture inside someone's head.

Since all people and all cultures are equal -- inside the heads of the
one-uppers -- any disparities in the real world are seen as injustices to
be corrected. Therefore, if a high school punishes more black males than
Asian females for misconduct, then apparently that school must be racist
and should be sued.

Differences in income, mortality rates, unemployment, and innumerable
other things are all automatically suspect as evils of society, because
different groups cannot possibly be behaving differently, since they are
equal inside the heads of the one-uppers. Countries that are poor cannot
possibly be less productive, but must have been "exploited" somehow.
People who think this way are especially dangerous when we are facing
mortal perils, such as international terrorism. Since there is moral
equivalence inside their heads, their conclusion is that we must have done
something wrong to make terrorists hate us.

It will never occur to such people that the kind of envy and resentments
which they themselves promote incessantly may be behind the hatred from
those who are lagging far behind the progress of the West and who can
achieve significance only by destruction.

We cannot do anything about what is inside other people's heads -- except
let it stay there and not get inside ours. But getting inside our heads,
and especially inside the heads of our children, is the compelling urge of
those who want to make the real world outside match their inner vision.
Why? Because theirs is a very self-flattering vision, which establishes
them as morally one-up on the rest of us. Going against the common sense
of ordinary people is the key to their self-exaltation, whether they are
favoring criminals over victims, animals over humans, or other countries
over America.

In a long war against terrorism, where we may have to both suffer and
inflict terrible devastation, unity and resolve are the keys to enduring
and prevailing. One-uppers are the last thing we need. They are enemies
within, who can be the most dangerous kinds of enemies.

If they are so preoccupied with flattering their own vanity that they do
not understand that their own survival is at stake, so be it. But the
tragedy is that millions of other people's survival is also at stake.

"Upon hiding/editing a post, the member of the editorial working group who did so will also add a comment explaining the basis upon which the decision to edit/hide was made."

It's obvious nessie is doing the editing, but leaves no markers(other than it's spray of urine) explaining a post was there, or why it was edited. It leaves the regulars looking as if they're ghost writing.

That so many right wing spammers on here are so obsessed with nessie . . . It's hilarious how people can only focus on one thing. Over and over and over, sort of frantically, like a pathology that's getting worse by the day, trying to push out something else that's bothering them . . .

And it's strange because these are obviously not stupid people - they're actually amazingly creative, especially in some of their verbal imagery - so I can't understand why they're so crazed about nessie. I can understand dimwits like Bush, who steal phrases from Disney to talk to a superpower nation, but these people could really be doing better than going on and on about one person on here. Frankly I'm getting bored by it.

The crying democrats image is pretty good, and the crazed slung-together graphics trying to pin the bump of truth on indymedia were hilarious - really -but for me, the nessie stuff gets old. And everyone knows about the id-theft thing, so who cares? Dullsville.

How about a nice care-not-cash discussion? Or another bumpersticker action? Maybe you guys could come up wtih your own bumpersticker. How 'bout that kids?

Nessie hasn't posted more than one or two comments per day on the indymedia newswire for some time now, and if you were perceptive, you'd notice that. Has anyone failed to suggest to you that you have some 'obsessions' that you should do some work on? You're up at 8 in the evening, 2 in the morning, 6 in the morning posting more of these weird photos - which would probably take other people hours to find by browsing through people's personal home pages - and babbling this line about how 'nessie' is everywhere and this causes you emotional distress. with the 'bedwetter' phrase - not so many people use that phrase. Are you the sidekick of 'smashtheleft' from tennessee who used to briefly flood this newswire a few months ago?
by cp
Is that who the troller is... , jojogunn? What's interesting to me is that in the real world, I talk and work with conservatives all the time. My family ships me David Horowitz books, and there are students in my classes and the people on greyhound, and I'm working with a student club at Berkeley here containing lots of ayn randites to bring conservative Justin Raimondo to speak - and we can civilly discuss lots of things without trying to patronizingly recruit or insult the other party. Hey, could you experimentally try dropping all the cynicism and have a 24 hr civility period where you straightforwardly present or argue a position without just trying to irritate everyone like the boys in my 7th grade class who would line the hallways 'gleeking', or lobbing very tiny bits of spit on everyone, and where anyone who showed their irritation would just encourage them.
