The year is 2002 and the prison population of the United States exceeds 2 million-one of the largest per capita in the world. As the federal and state governments cut funding for education and healthcare and diverts it to prison expansion and war, more and more Americans are finding their future is locked behind bars.

California is in a state of emergency, with money for education and housing being diverted into prison guard salaries and prison construction, all under the auspices of a Governor who’s been sold to the highest bidder.

WE CANNOT LET THIS GO UNCHALLENGED!

On October 19, join prisoner advocates, family members, former prisoners, and prison reform activists in a nationwide demonstration to protest the injustices occurring in our nation’s prisons.

This demonstration coincides with the 3rd annual Prison Reform Unity Day, a project of the Prison Reform Unity Project, or PRUP. California Prison Focus and PRUP are asking for individuals and community organizations to demonstrate outside of their local prison to demand the overturn of the three strikes law, the release of lifers eligible for parole, health care for all prisoners, a shut-down of the Security Housing Units, no more prison construction, and the abolition of the death penalty.

A major rally and demonstration will then converge outside of the gates of California State Prison–Corcoran, which organizers are asking all participants protesting at the various prisons around the state to gather at 2:30 PM.

Organizers chose Corcoran in particular because of it’s central location and because it’s one of the worst human rights violators in the whole California prison system. Abuses at Corcoran have been thoroughly documented by human rights and social justice groups for years. They include prison guards staging gladiator fights, setting up other prisoners to be raped or murdered, systemic medical neglect and malpractice, racist, sexist, and homophobic harassment, brutal cell extractions, and mental cruelty. Corcoran also is a location for one of the state’s SHUs (Security Housing Unit), in which prisoners (including non-violent HIV-positive and “gang identified” prisoners) are locked down 23.5 hours a day indefinitely.

Now is the time to stand up to the theft of our children’s future! Now is the time to oppose the sellout of our communities! Won’t you join us in saying:

“Incarceration will not solve our problems! Investing in our people and our communities will! We want a future without prisons!”
