Report- 15 Danish Jews on Muslim group's hit list

by Nina Gilbert-Jerusalem Post
The Simon Wiesenthal Center has called on Danish Prime Minister Anders Rassmussen to personally intervene in the case. The Muslim group believed to be behind the list is Hizb Ut Tahrir, whose aim is to create worldwide Islamic rule.
By August 19, 2002

Fifteen prominent Danish Jews have been put on a hit list by an extreme Muslim group in the country, a Danish newspaper revealed last week.

The people on the list reportedly include Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Melchior's fater, Binyamin, a rabbi in the community, and the fater of Ron Pundak, one of the archietects of the Oslo Accords.

The Simon Wiesenthal Center has called on Danish Prime Minister Anders Rassmussen to personally intervene in the case.

The Muslim group believed to be behind the list is Hizb Ut Tahrir, whose aim is to create worldwide Islamic rule.

Deputy Foreign Minister Michael Mechior told the Jerusalem Post Monday that he could not confirm or deny that his father is on the list. However, he said that Danish authorities are "taking the matter seriously" and have contacted the people on the list.

Melchior said the newspaper, Jyllands-Posten, obtained the list through Muslim connections, but was pressured not to publish it.

He also said that the attorney-general of Denmark is considering outlawing the Muslim group that is reportedly behind the plot. According to Melchoir, the group has been active for the past few years, and the incidence of extreme Muslim activities is on the rise since the outbreak of violence between Israel and the Palestinians two years ago.

Binyamin Melchior was the chief rabbi of Denmark and is still a prominent Jewish figure in the country. Pundak lives in Israel and in Denmark and was the editor of a leading Danish newspaper.

The IMU and the Hizb-ut-Tahrir: Implications of the Afghanistan Campaign

OVERVIEW

The attacks in the United States on 11 September 2001 and the U.S.-led military campaign in Afghanistan have intensified the scrutiny of Islamist movements across Central Asia. Of such movements, two – the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan (IMU) and the Hizb-ut-Tahrir al-Islami (“Party of Islamic Liberation”) – have been of greatest concern to the governments of Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan and Tajikistan and to the broader international community.

This briefing considers how the allied military action in Afghanistan has changed the dynamic regarding these two organisations in Central Asia and impacted their memberships, leaderships and structures. How Central Asia deals with these two very different movements is critical. Far too often, the region’s non-democratic leadership has made repression its instrument of choice for dealing with religion and civil society as a whole, thus creating greater public sympathy for groups whose agendas, methods and rhetoric are deeply troubling. There is a danger that the international community, in its understandable eagerness to combat terrorism, will give the regions’ governments a free hand to continue and expand repression of all groups that are viewed as political threats – a dynamic that will only boomerang and further destabilise the region over time.

Far more to date has been written about the IMU, which U.S. President George Bush cited as a terrorist organisation of particular concern following 11 September, than about the Hizb-ut-Tahrir. This was likely done, at least in part, to help secure Uzbekistan’s cooperation in the military campaign in Afghanistan. But the IMU has received much greater scrutiny also because of its military activities, including cross border incursions into Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan during the last three years, and allegations by the government of Uzbekistan that it was behind bombings in Tashkent in February 1999. The IMU was also involved in high profile kidnappings in Kyrgyzstan during 1999 and 2000. The IMU and its leadership have frequently used Afghanistan as a base of operations, and the organisation has close ties to both the Taliban and the al-Qaeda terrorist network. Given this record, it is no surprise that the IMU has found itself in the crosshairs of regional governments and the international community since 11 September.

The Hizb-ut-Tahrir has received less international scrutiny, in part, because it has advocated a non-violent approach toward its goals. However, it shares many broader aims with the IMU, primarily the institution of an Islamist political order in the region. While the IMU tends to stress more short-term political objectives, focusing on overthrowing the government of Uzbekistan, the Hizb-ut-Tahrir has the more utopian aim of re-establishing a caliphate that would encompass all Muslims. Many Hizb-ut-Tahrir members do at times speak in ways that suggest the organisation, or at least part of its base, has not precluded resorting to violence if it continues to suffer severe repression, particularly in Uzbekistan.

Nevertheless, the Hizb-ut-Tahrir presents a particularly difficult challenge to Western policymakers since it holds extremist views but openly advocates only peaceful change. Governments in Central Asia, which believe it to be a considerable threat to the political order, have responded by jailing people for the non-violent expression of ideas. Much of this briefing is directed toward exploring the Hizb-ut-Tahrir in detail, including its recruitment methods, philosophy and those elements driving its upsurge in popularity across Central Asia.

Communiqué from Hizb ut-Tahrir – Indonesia to the embassies of the Arabs states

uploaded 22 Apr 2002

“Allah has promised to those among you who believe and work righteous deeds, that of a certainty, He will cause them to accede to power on earth, as He granted it to those before them, that He will establish in authority their Deen which he has chosen for them, and that He will change (their state) after the fear in which they lived, to one of security and peace: They will worship Me (alone) and not ascribe powers to any beside Me” [TMQ 24: 55].

Bismillah ir-Rahman ir-Raheem

“And kill them wherever you find them, and turn them out from where they have turned you out” [TMQ 2: 191]

The Jews are a people of slander. They are a treacherous people who violate oaths and covenants. They lie and change words from their right places. They take the rights of people unjustly, and kill the Prophets and the innocent. They are the most severe in their hatred for those who believe. Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala) has forbidden us from allying ourselves with them:

“It is only as regards those who fought against you on account of religion, and have driven you out of your homes, and helped to drive you out, that Allah forbids you to befriend them, and whoever befriend them such are the Zalimoon (wrongdoers)” [TMQ 60: 9].

This is how they used to be. This is how they are now, and this is how they will continue to be. This region, especially for the people of Palestine, has suffered their evil for about fifty years. The martyrdom operations that are taking place against them are legitimate. The whole of Palestine is a battlefield whether it is the parts usurped by the Jews in 1948, or afterwards.

Based on what is taking place in this region, especially to the people of Palestine, we Hizb ut-Tahrir in Indonesia, say to you the following:

1. We reject the shameful silence of your states, their disgraceful submission and despicable cowardice which makes them collaborators in the conspiracy against Palestine and the people of Palestine.

2. Allah makes it obligatory on you to send the armies of your states to protect Palestine and the people of Palestine and to liberate them from the occupation of the usurping Jews. And to fight the Jewish criminals and to totally eliminate the Jewish entity.

3. Allah obliges on you also to open the borders of your states – which are illegitimate borders – to the Muslim fighters from every country so that they can help their brothers who are calling out to them for help in Palestine in response to the saying of Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala):

“But if they seek your help in religion, it is your duty to help them” [TMQ 8: 72].

This is our communiqué to you and our statement. So will you respond with sincerity to Allah (Subhanahu wa ta'ala)? You will have to answer for yourselves in this world and in the Hereafter.
