South Africa Attacks Own Citizens To Defend Peres

by South Africa Indymedia
Two comrades from Indymedia South Africa, Mabata and another one that at this moment remains unidentified, have been arrested today at 14h00 at NASREC. The two have been transferred to Booysens Police Station. Further reports will follow (on the South Africa IMC Site)on this countless act of police repression and intimidation on social movements and independent media workers.
Palestinian Solidarity arrested at protest against Shimon Peres address
About 100 demonstrators against the address by Israeli Foreign Minister, Shimon Peres, have been prevented from entering the Johannesburg College of Education and are now surrounded by police at the venue of the Zionist platform. Water cannon was earlier used against the first Palestinian solidarity contingent to arrive on the scene. Security forces have baton charged the protestors and used pepper spray to try disperse the crowd. Support for the demonstrators is being rallied and are en route to the campus. Zionist repression is being visited upon Palestinian solidarity action in South Africa.

Earlier today, Naboth Nabata, an IMC photographer, was arrested at Nasrec - the venue for the Global People's Forum. He was assaulted by the police, who used their helmets to beat him up. While detained in the police station at Nasrec, other IMC journalists heard screaming emanating from the holding cell, implying some kind of brutality inflicted on the detained. Ironically, he was charged with police assault, and is due to appear in court tomorrow morning.
