No On N Protest

by salem (salem [at] indymedia.org)
No On N activists are increasing the pressure on the Gavin Newsom "Care Not Cash" proposal which may hurt the poor more then help them.

No On N activists, lead by the POWER org, took their campaign to the streets remeniscent of civil rights campaigns of the past. The were out to protest the Care Not Cash Initiative introduced by Supervisor Gavin Newsom, who is rumored to be springboarding to the Mayor's office off the initiative.

No On N activists commented:
"We are out here because we are trying to expose the relationship between the business class and Gavin Newsom, they are in the bar together trying to make homeless people disappear". Says Cindy Wiesner of POWER. Many members of the Golden Gate Restaurant Association (GGRA) have contributed directly to the 'Counterfeit Cash' initiative and Kathleen Harrington hosted a fundraiser for Prop N."

While most protests in San Francisco seem to be dominated by priviledged white middle class anarchists. This protest included elements from a different anarchist branch, the street and squatter punks as they walked the picket line of African Americans, Asians, Latinos and others. A Latina protestor commented:

"As homeless GA recipients, we are good for small businesses" contends Yolanda Catzalco, of People Organized to Win Employment Rights, "We work cleaning the streets in front of business in return for our cash payments, and we use our pay to support local business by buying food, toiletries and clothes... We are here to demand that Kathleen Harrington and GGRA stop funding the "Counterfeit Cash" initiative and start putting their contributions towards real solutions to poverty and homelessness."

She also noted that if Proposition N passes no additional services are guaranteed and the shelter system is already overbooked. She also noted that via Workfare homeless people are already working for their fare share, in fact if Prop. N passes the hourly wage of a homeless person on welfare will be just $.11.

What this protest suggested, that could be very positive for movement building is a true model of diversity in tactics. The Campaign Against Increased Homelessness is evolving to the point where they are fighting Newsom and the Millionaires both through direct actions and grassroots electoral campaigns.

I always say, don't give the bastards an inch.

Those of us who have sat through excrutiating long activist meetings where people have gone for the jugular over the voting vs. direct action can rejoice. We can do both, and fighting to win means fighting on all fronts.

See you at the barricades, see you at the ballot box.

This is wonderful! To see homeless people get organized and to see you guys targetting these businesses is excellent!!

Way to go!!

Please post your planned actions on here so everyone can join in!

Much of our GA money is being used for drugs and alchohol. How can you guys defend this? We should support CnC because the money saved can be better reallocated for those that truely need it, not for those that come to SF for the free drug money. The homeless druggies are ruining it for everyone else. Cut off their gravy train and there will be more for the rest of the homeless that really need it.

"While most protests in San Francisco seem to be dominated by priviledged white middle class anarchists. This protest included elements from a different anarchist branch, the street and squatter punks"
What is this about, you know it sometimes seems like the indymedia mimics the mainstreams media perspectives on class and anarchism. Which is really problematic, and needs to be questioned in ourselves. It is a little disturbing that comments like this are allowed to slide as factual reporting. Creating hierarchies based on what? How much people bathe, how they dress, what their connection to lifestyle choices are?
Just checking.

i have to agree w/ "friend or foe." when i read the piece i was glad to see that there was a diversity of folks at the protest, and i'm glad this was highlighted. however, the line "While most protests in San Francisco seem to be dominated by priviledged (sic) white middle class anarchists" does seem to mimic mainstream reporting intended to discredit anarchist efforts. also, when saying "most protests" which do you mean? are you only looking at the protests that "white, middle class anarchists" organize? i just sense some snideness here, that's all. also, people often make assumptions about people's class, particularly if that person is white, without knowing the details. i also sense a valuing of the participation of "squatter punks" over participation by other white folks and anarchists. or maybe i'm reading too much into this.

that said, thanks for the report on the protest.

Round up the homeless and send them to monster island.
How much?

How do you know?

We need to organize to trash this thing.

Imagine - you get about $1.50 a day (assuming these 'services' will also provide all food, toiletries, clothing, etc.) to spend on something. What would it be? Would you splurge and get a coffee? Or a pastry? Or some gum?

This is a sad and scary proposition so please leave this posting alone about minutia of it's presentation. We have a ton of work to do to protect the homeless from this insanity.

We can start by forging links between the progressive prop campaigns - why not all rent a space together?

No matter how you slice it. Assholes need to find something better to do in SF. It's too bad if your mamma doesn't wan't you suckle you anymore at age 27. Maybe you need to leaern how to operate a broom or mop (the is nothing to be ashamed of there).

Does anyplace still have GA? Most such aid was stopped in '96, with welfare reform, which shifted tax dollars from aiding the poor to aiding corporations.

The way GA worked for the poor: There was a combination cash and vouchers. To continue to qualify for aid, one had to show receipts for rent, as well as provide the name/phone number of the landlord so the case worker could confirm that the receipt was valid. One would also receive enough food stamps to cover a frugal amount opf food per month. There was very little cash involved. Those known to use alcohol/drugs usually received no cash at all, instead being provided with store vouchers for such things as soap and toilet paper.
When the poor were able to dig up enough money for a bottle, it wasn't welfare money that they were using. For the very down-and-out, the money came from panhandling, recycling, etc. A small group would get together, pool their quarters and dimes, and share a 12-pack or a bottle. And for many, this would provide the only moments of comfort in their lives. And from someone who has "been there, done that", I can say that it takes considerable arrogance and self-righteousness to begrudge these people what little comfort they can find.
