Collage of one of the Freshwater Tree-sits
A collage of four images from the summer 2002 tree-sit in the Freshwater area in Humboldt County.
Remedy has been up in the redwood tree named "Jerry" for well over a hundred days now. Nearby is another tree-sit which has been occupied by Wren, which is also getting closer to a hundred days of occupation. The two woman have vowed to stay up in the trees as long as it takes to get these ancient beauties protected and spared from the lumber jack's axe of Maxxam corporation. Readers are reminded that Govern Davis vowed to protect the ancient forests "from the lumber jack's axe" during his campaign to get elected. The Freshwater residents have put their local support behind the sitters resupplying them with water and food as needed. These two sits are a ridge over from where Nate Madsen sat for over two years in the same watershed protecting Mariah.
Rumour has it, that Chucky Hurwitz, himself, visited Remedy with Pacific Lumber's property manager and chucky's own family the weekend of the annual company picnic in Scotia a few weeks back. At the base of the tree apparently, Maxxam's property manager asked Remedy a few questions about why she's was up there. She responded, asking the property manager what he thought about Hurwitz himself? At the time Remedy responded and asked the tough questions, she didn't know that Hurwitz was present for her response at the base of the tree. The party of Pacific Lumber employees, Chucky Hurwitz himself, Mrs. Hurwitz and Chucky's son were all at the base of the tree, packed up and left the area upon being asked the tough questions from the tree top. Remedy found out that following Monday upon calling the property manager who was in the crowd when they visited.
The Freshwater area of Maxxam land was subjected to a cease and desist order by either the Regional Water Quality Control Board or CDF, a few years back. Maxxscam has set a target of x amount of board feet they intend to log regardless of landslides, increased flooding or loss of wildlife habitat. Maxxam has given complete disregard for adjacent property owners own property rights, as has been demonstrated by the increased flooding due to the over logging of the watershed.
Remedy's tree is fairly close to the public road. From the casual observers eyes, it looks as if this tree and the tree Wren is sitting in, are holding up the county road. If these ancient ones where cut, it wouldn't be surprising if the county had to replace the road from the lack of stability that the loss of these trees would cause. The land below these sits has already been clear-cut. The ancients one are still falling!
