SF: No on N&R; Yes on S: Save Our Homes; Defend the Homeless; Support Medical Marijuana

by Tenant Voter
The ballot is now final for the November 5, 2002 election and the call to arms has already been issued by the SF Tenants Union to defend rent control and defeat Prop R. We must also defeat Prop N, the latest Democrat-Republican attack on the homeless.
The ballot is now final for the November 5, 2002 election and the call to arms has already been issued by the SF Tenants Union to defend rent control and defeat Prop R. We must also defeat Prop N, the latest Democrat-Republican attack on the homeless.

Prop R is Risky and Repeals Rent Control. For the lastest on the No on R campaign, see:
http://www.saverentcontrol.com/

The reactionary items on the ballot are brought to us by (you only get one guess) "mayor" Willie Brown and his lackeys on the Board of Supervisors, Tony Hall, of District 7-St. Francis Woods & Outer Sunset,
who is promoting Prop. R and Gavin Newsom of District 2-Marina and Pacific Heights, who is promoting the theft of money from the homeless, guaranteeing more homelessness, Prop. N.

Prop R is best known as HOPE is A Hoax, for it allows for thousands of condominium conversions, thereby destroying rent control. If you do not have a household income of at least $100,000, and preferably more, you cannot afford any condominium in San Francisco. Do not fall for the lies you will hear in the coming 12 weeks to election day, Nov. 5, 2002.

We can defeat Props. R and N and do much more, if all the tenants vote as the tenants are 50% of the voters in a high voter turnout election , which the governor's general election always is. 10% of the property owners always support tenants, and property owners always vote. We may be able to win more property owners to voting No on R, but we must have every single eligible tenant voting in this election in order to defeat Props. R and N.

PLEASE REGISTER TO VOTE TODAY. DO NOT DELAY.
Like it or not, the way we defend rent control in San Francisco is by voting. You do not have to vote for any people, but you do have to register to vote and vote No on R and N, at the very least. Those of you who are eligible to vote, please be sure you are registered. If you did not receive your voting materials for the March 2002 primary at your current address, then you are not registered.

To register to vote: Request a voter registration form from the Registrar of Voters:
(1) By E-mail at: debra.brown [at] sfgov.org
(2) By phone at 554-4411
(3) In person, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday, City Hall basement, Room 48 at Van Ness and McAllister Streets.
I STRONGLY SUGGEST you also sign up to be a PERMANENT ABSENTEE VOTER. In California, we do not have to have any reason to be absent to vote by mail and anyone can do so, permanently. This will allow you to vote in the comfort of your home at your convenience, and mail the ballot as soon as you complete it , the sooner, the better. The full description of information on registration and contacting the Registrar of Voters can be found at:
http://www.sfgov.org/election/contact.htm

WE MUST SAVE RENT CONTROL. The existence of rent control has made possible affordable housing for a labor force in San Francisco and it makes possible all the progressive political and artistic organizations of which we are so proud in San Francisco. Rent control should be extended to all rental housing, and more affordable rental housing should be built, but that is not going to happen without the defeat of Prop. R.

If you wonder about elections in general, it is the duty of those of us who defend the workingclass to vote for those who cannot. So please, if you are an American citizen and have no other legal bar from voting, PLEASE REGISTER TO VOTE TODAY. THE HOME YOU SAVE WILL BE YOUR OWN.

Prop S, the marijuana initiative allowing the City to grow its own, is on the ballot, so if saving rent control is not an incentive to vote, voting for Prop S should be.

The full list of San Francisco and California initiatives can be found at:
http://www.sfgov.org/election/guides/measures110502election.htm

California's initiatives can also be found at:
http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/elections_j.htm#2002General
and with pro and con explanation and references at:
http://www.calvoter.org/2002/general/propositions/index.html

This tenant voter is skipping all the people. Whatever you do, please stop voting for the Democrat-Republicans. Tony Hall, Gavin Newsom and Willie Brown are all Democrats, and they are all anti-tenant and anti-workingclass.

This tenant voter also does not usually support bonds. It is far better if the money comes from the general fund and the sooner people send that message to the Legislature, etc., the sooner they will have to cut back on prisons, the police and the military.

Tenant Voter recommends:

California: Yes on 52, No on all the rest. (You would be safe in voting a Bingo No on the California propositions).

San Francisco:
Please note, on Prop B, the housing bond, tenants will be expected to pay for those bonds.
No on A, B, C, M, N, Q, R, Bart Bond
Yes on D through L, O, P, S
