8/19SF Janitors Picket SEIU International

by Bay Area Workers Democracy Network (united [at] labornet.org)
On 8/19 SF Janitors will be protesting the trusteeship of SEIU Local 87 and the attacks on their democratic rights
Justice for Nagi Daifullah!

Justice For SF Janitors!

All janitors join together to memorialize Nagi Daifullah. Nagi a Palestinian American was murdered by the police for standing up for workers rights on the farms in California. At the same time, janitors and their labor and democratic rights are being attacked right here in San Francisco.
San Francisco janitors SEIU Local 87 has been put in trusteeship by SEIU Pres. Andy Stern. This trusteeship was imposed because the International does not want the San Francisco janitors to have a democratic vote on whether to merge with SEIU Local 1877.
WHAT IS HAPPENING NOW IN SEIU LOCAL 87?
*Today, International Trustee Triana Selton is allowing the dispatching of members of SEIU Local 87 to janitorial jobs at $9.15 an hour. This is below the city’s living wage law and also is below the basic wage of SEIU 87 contracts which is $11.25 an hour. IS THIS JUSTICE ?
*In a violation of senority, contractors such as One Source, ABM and ABLE are harassing members and illegally tranferring members out of buildings. The SEIU trusteeship is refusing to file grievances for member and charges with the NLRB. Local 87 member Anna Ortiz with over 7 years senority was illegally moved from 525 Market to another building. Local 87 trustees have refused to file grievances in this overt violation of the contract. This inaction is also weakening the union in the upcoming contract fight next year. If we don’t fight to defend the contract now, how will we defend it when it expires? Also in the past, the International accused former Pres. Richard Leung of failure to represent the members. What is the difference today? IS THIS JUSTICE?
*The Trustees have eliminated the monthly membership union meetings of SEIU Local 87.
IS THIS JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY?
*The trustees have hand picked a Local 87 committee to investigate a merger between Local 87 and Local 1877. Members should have the right to an elected investigation committee and the right to vote on any merger. Their hand picked committee is also filled with three members of the Loaiza family. Is this a representative committee or is this a "family committee"?
*The International is increasing dues for the next five years without a vote of the rank and file membership. IS THIS JUSTICE AND DEMOCRACY?
*The hiring hall should be 100% in the union hall so that there can be no discrimination and violation of senority rights and discrimination because of age. WE NEED JUSTICE NOW!
*The International is now moving to sell the union offices and hall while the local is under trusteeship. This same operation was done in Los Angeles against the janitors of Local 399. This building was built with the dues of Local 87 members. Now the international will probably use some of the money to support more Democrats. Their multi-million dollar donations to the politicians again takes place also without a vote of the membership.IS THIS JUSTICE?
*Buidlings such as 400 Sansome and 753 Front St. are going non-union and the trustees are refusing to moblize the membership against this open union busting. IS THIS JUSTICE?
