(08-07) 10:59 PDT SAN FRANCISCO (AP) --

Vice President Dick Cheney said Wednesday he'd like to serve a second term "if the president's willing and if my wife approves."

Cheney, who has a history of heart trouble, said doctors also would need to give him the go-ahead.

He expressed the same sentiments more than a year ago while announcing that he needed a heart pacemaker. Despite a year of good health reports, Cheney's status for Bush's 2004 re-election campaign continues to be a source of speculation.

"I suppose two people are going to figure very prominently in that decision," Cheney said when asked whether he would be on the ticket. "One is obviously the president. The other is my wife."

Fielding questions after an economic speech to the Commonwealth Club of San Francisco, Cheney said serving as vice president has been the high point of his professional life, but he noted that with public service "you become a target."

The Securities and Exchange Commission is investigating accounting practices of Halliburton Co. while Cheney led the oil firm. Hecklers interrupted his speech Wednesday, shouting "Cheney is a corporate crook."

Even with the downsides, Cheney said he was ready to serve again if Bush wants him.

"He'll have to make a decision by this time about two years from now when the convention rolls around in terms of deciding who he wants to have serve as his vice president in a second term," Cheney said. "That will be his call and I'll be happy to support whatever decision he chooses to make."

Later, he said, "If the president's willing and if my wife approves and if the doctors say it's OK, then I'd be happy to serve a second term."

Cheney, who has had four heart attacks, said he is feeling fine.

"With respect to my health, it's good. I have been probably better watched now than I have ever been," he said. "I've got the doctor following me around every place I go. Literally when I get on the elevator there's a guy there with a black bag."

During his speech, several protesters slipped into the hall and disrupted Cheney's remarks about the economy and the war on terrorism.

He stopped and stood silently for several seconds as the women chanted. As Secret Service agents led protesters from the room, Cheney said "Thank you," laughing slightly, and resumed his speech.

The speech was part of a daylong swing through Northern California. Cheney also was to headline a fund-raiser in Fresno for Dick Monteith, a Republican state senator running for outgoing Democratic Rep. Gary Condit's seat.

Free speech is now illegal in this contry that is being run by a corrupted and greedy corporate government. The priveledged white wealthy minority in this country reminds me of the German citizens that supported the Nazis.

The pic of that lady with the shopping bag for dick says it all, doesn't it? Disturbing...
by kevin
I would put the figures higher. I've been to MANY demos in the city and would estimate that the demonstration at its height was around 350-400...at least.

The pro-Cheneys were about 10.

Medea and Ed were hilarious. Good job to everybody who made it out!!! Especially the pro-Cheneys who gave us a great laugh.

Chants by the pro-crooks (oops, Cheneys):

"USA! USA! USA!"

"Cheney! Cheney! Cheney!"
(interspersed by "Sucks!" by anti-Cheneys)

"Go back to Afghanistan!"
(To which I replied, "Go back to McDonalds!")

"You should've been aborted!"

white minority? who the fuck are you, henry Rollins?
read your fucking census. Almost 69% of the population of the U.S. self identifies as white.
The fact more than half of the country comes from such a position, that the white middle class is so huge, is crucial in making change so difficult to achieve.
know the problem or you will never find a solution.

We love you!!

Women have the power!

You did what we all hoped you would and we are so proud of that - the many many people who were on the outside without a voice in there. You gave us one.

Excellent.

I just want to express appreciation, from activists in the Seattle area, for all of you who took the time to protest the arrogant, corporate criminal, Cheney. I look forward to the day when such an appearance by Dick, Shrub, or any other Shrub Regime cronies is met by, not 300-400 people, but 3,000 to 4,000....and 30,000 to 40,000. I look forward to the day when more people realize it is vital to take time out from their daily lives to protest these greed-filled plunderers and to hound them to all corners of the nation and the world until they're driven from the positions of power from where they exploit without shame. I look forward to the day when they fall from power in disgrace, as they most assuredly deserve.

On a lighter note, thanks for the great pics of the protest. I honestly wasn't sure if the stars and stripes woman was for real or just trying to parody....and those wandering yuppies......no surprise that they were drinking Starbucks.

Keep up the good work in the Bay Area!
by Calculus
Wow! 300-400. Let's see, the Bay area has approx. 5 million people, the state 30 million, the country 300 million and the world 4 billion. So 0.00008 of the Bay Area showed up to protest, 0.0000133 of the state, 0.00000133 of the country, and .0000001 of the world. I'm impressed!
by Jeff
You only need to look once, to see they are more concerned with looking important, than trying to find an honest story.

my last comment about how smug they look was dirrected at the photo of the corporate media.

Sorry I did'nt realize comments would'nt be directly under the photo.

Rosa Parks was one person.
by vic
exactly.

That's the incredible thing about human psychology, particularly the 'group think' aspects. If only one person takes a step forward, it gives the power to everyone else who was too afraid to before that.

Unfortunately, now with Prozac, Zoloft, Lithium, etc., it may get harder to find the gutsy few - i.e., Abbey Hoffman, who had mania.

But on the other hand, we're a more vicious society now, so those meds won't keep up with number of people getting disenfranchised and sidelined. Besides, fewer people will have health care t be given those.
by JZ
Makes me proud to be a Bay Area resident! Well done hecklers! Great message: Cheney is a corporate criminal, no war in Iraq printed on the front page of the Oakland Tribune!!
by Rogus
Did more of a disservice than a service to your cause. To the “average” American, it came off as some juvenals delinquents looking to make trouble and trying to get on TV rather than a political statement. You do more to push your cause by showing up in masses to protest rallies than you do heckling.
by bleh
"Jesus started out with only twelve, and one of them was a snitch."

Ya but he was still able to lay the groundwork for one of the most oppressive and bloodthirsty power structures in world history. The atrocities commited by the church make hitlers little decade of terror look like childs play.

The San Francisco Chronicle's SFGate Web site features the following online survey on a page accompanying an Associated Press dispatch about Vice President Dick Cheney's Frisco speech yesterday:

What question would you like to ask Cheney at his SF speech?

Where the Halliburton you been?
Why isn't Bush doing more to help economy?
Is there a secret plan to invade Iraq?
Is that really you, or an alien clone?

Dear Calculus:

I'm not so good in math. Could you please crunch the numbers for the 10 pro-Cheney demonstrators and draw a similar conclusion about who THEY represent? Thanks!
by Calculus
The rest of America was busy carrying out Bush/Cheney's orders. The 10 that were there were those we could spare.
by scary
"The rest of America was busy carrying out Bush/Cheney's orders."

Bush isnt that popular. Americans tend to rally behind leaders since we are taught not to think for ourselves in school, but if 25% of the population openly dislikes Bush we should have some hope(and Bush's popularity is more than those who approve of individual policies or his policies as a whole).
Also note that over 30% think its time for someone new as President.

http://www.pollingreport.com/terror.htm
http://www.pollingreport.com/wh2004.htm
by brigg
Any President would be crazy not to like these numbers. These polls show Bush's Job Performance approval at 66% and disapprove at 25%, Terrorism approval at 72% and disapprove at 21 %, and Election Today at 41% Bush and 27% someone else. That 27% is core Democrats, and usually they say 40% core Dems, 40% core GOP, with the middle 20% being the swing voters, so in essance they're behind. How you get that "over 30% think its time for someone new" must be fuzzy math, or likely a product of those schools where students "are taught not to think."

Besides, that's a CBS/New York Times poll. Those people hate Bush. It's very likely they asked the questions with distain and contentment, daring people to say they liked Bush.
by Rogus
I hate it when people play the number games to twist facts to support their political views. 300-400 people showed up against Cheney, 10 supporters showed up Cheney, and now we have to play the numbers game to show how this is representative of the population opinion of said subject. Typically the people who show up to these events tend to be the most radical and adamant supporter to their political views and unfortantely those in the middle get squeezed. As to polling data and drawing conclusions from them, we all know that polls can be manipulated to support anyone’s cause.

To use Scary’s own data polling source if you want to make conclusions, then if you look at Clinton’s last popularity report: http://www.pollingreport.com/clinton-.htm then 35% of the population openly disliked Clinton’s popularity, but by all accounts I gathered, if he ran for a 3rd Presidency he would have won.
by needs another lift
That flag-bedecked blonde on the her expensive balcony looks rather frighteningly simian. Is it any wonder she would support Busy? Perhaps she ought to have yet another face lift, or at least repair the damage that cosmetic surgery has already wrought upon her probably once normal features.

Are these the paid goons we all all saw in florida during the Amerikan 2000 elections??

yah, how come all the pro-Bush folx jump up and down and howl every time there is a protest as if it were a crime but were completely silent about the crowd of thugs Bush/Cheney flew in to pound on the windows of the election recount office? And effectively stopped the recount, despite the fact recounts are normal and happen every election?
by me too
this is a very interesting photo -- rich woman in her ritzy apt is moved to grab a shopping bag (HOW appropriate), probably from Bloomie's, and scrawl the word "DICK" with a heart around it in Chanel lipstick, throw on some US-flag-like apparel, and step out onto her classy balcony to make her statement to counter those low-lifes whose opinions are threatening her way of life ...
by DL
It would be super to have Cheney's "wife" wear a sign that says, "I'm with Dick!"

Or another that says, "Who needs Vaseline when my Dick has Halliburton slime?"

Finally, how about, "My Dick is good to the last drop--of Halliburton crude"?

by stock tips
Normally I avoid discussing any advice regarding buying or selling of stocks but I felt this is important enough to share and warn you since this explosive situation might prove to be yet another ENRON. Please review any holdings you might have in the following stocks: American Can, Interstate Water, National Gas Company, Northern Tissue Company. Due to uncertain market conditions, I advise you to sit tight on your American Can, hold your Water, and let go of your Gas. You may be interested to know that Northern Tissue touched a new bottom today, and millions were wiped clean.

It's a tough market out there. Be careful

hey Matt, white minority isn't henry's. it was way before he destroyed black flag.
good message, though.
by Rogus
If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Nortel stock one year ago, it would now be worth $49.00.

With Enron, you would have $16.50 of the original $1,000.00.

With WorldCom, you would have less than $5.00 left.

If you had bought $1,000.00 worth of Budweiser (the beer, not the stock) one year ago, drank all the beer, then turned in the cans for the 10 cent deposit, you would have $214.00.

Based on the above, my current investment advice is to drink heavily and recycle.
