BREAKFAST BRIEFING ON WELFARE REFORM
Friday, July 19, 10 AM , San Francisco
U.S. Senate takes up welfare reform in July; Bay Area welfare recipients—adults and youth—will discuss the proposed legislation and their experiences with the welfare system
WHAT: Welfare reform is being re-authorized by
Congress this year for the first time since 1996, when welfare was “reformed” by President Bill Clinton. The House of Representatives passed its new welfare reform bill in May, and the Senate will debate welfare in July. Please join us for a press briefing on welfare reform that will provide an overview of the various welfare reform proposals and personal testimonials by Bay Area welfare recipients, including youth, about whether or not welfare “reform” has worked for them. This briefing should help journalists put their reporting on national welfare legislation into the context of how the legislation will affect low-income parents, young people and immigrants in the Bay Area.
WHEN: Friday, July 19, 10 AM – 12 NOON
WHERE: World Affairs Council, 312 Sutter Street, 2nd Floor (at Grant Street), San Francisco
WHO: This press briefing is sponsored by the
Independent Press Association, Media Alliance, Pacific News Service, and the National Campaign for Jobs and Income Support.
COST: FREE
