Ariel Sharon Attacks Israeli Workingclass

by Socialist
The World Socialist Website reports that as the Israeli economy declines, the viciously anti-Arab lackey of US oil imperialism, Ariel Sharon, is leading the attack on the Jewish workingclass, because promoting the interests of oil imperialism is by definition anti-labor.

See "Sharon government scapegoats unemployed for Israel’s economic crisis" by David Cohen, July 6, 2002 at
http://www.wsws.org/articles/2002/jul2002/isra-j06.shtml

Pertinent paragraphs:

"The Israeli social-economic cabinet agreed on July 1 to a nationwide pilot scheme for a proposed workfare programme."

"The pilot scheme, modelled on the Wisconsin Plan in the United States, will be run by private contractors and so constitutes an initial step towards the privatisation of the benefits services. It will go into operation between March 1, 2003 and the end of 2004 and will obligate over 14,000 unemployed people to participate or have their benefits withdrawn. Amongst those targeted will be single mothers with children over the age of three who are currently exempt from looking for work until their children reach the age of seven."

"The cabinet meeting was characterised by vitriolic attacks on the unemployed. According to a report in Haaretz, Prime Minister Ariel Sharon is said to have, “pounded on the table several times and declared that those unwilling either to work or at least to volunteer for the community should not receive welfare payments. ‘Let them clean the streets—our cities are filthy—or work in hospitals or guard kindergartens,’ he said. ‘Even if the work is unpaid, at least the person will be doing something in exchange for his stipend. From this point on, we should not give to anyone without receiving something in exchange,’ Sharon said.”"

"Claimants are being scapegoated for the parlous state of the Israeli economy. The government’s target for economic growth in 2003 will be only one percent, which represents negative per capita growth, since the population is expected to increase by 2.5 percent next year. The Finance Ministry plans to slash at least NIS8-9 billion from the state budget for next year, in order to meet this target."

"This will be taken out of the backs of the working class. Sharon has promised only a small reduction of about NIS2 billion ($US2.49 billion) in defence spending and an additional across-the-board cut of about 2 percent in ministry funding. The main reduction will be based on cutbacks in benefits provided by the National Insurance Institute."

"The continuing slump of the Israeli economy will add tens of thousands of Israeli workers, youth and immigrants to the unemployment rolls. In Israel there are officially 271,000 unemployed workers, or 10.6 percent of the workforce. But only 54 percent of the potential labour force is actually employed. Only 76 percent work in the key 25-54 age group, compared to a Western average of 82 percent."

"The occupation of the West Bank and Gaza and its attendant costs is adding to Israel’s financial woes. The Zionist state spends billions oppressing the Palestinian people, building more settlements, arming the Israeli Defence Forces and mobilising reservists."

"The Palestinian working class is not the only victim of this madness; Jewish workers suffer from a lack of investment in the economy and the denial of funding for health, education and other essential social services. Sharon decided only recently, in the context of its emergency economic programme, to sharply raise taxation on labour."

Yes... keep focusing fanatically on the injustices of Israel in hopes of keeping people ignorant about the truely facist, racist, "classist" regimes- Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Syria, etc. If you truely cared about injustice you would look as hard at these countries... but you are too afraid of what you would find. And please don't yap about foreign aid- Egypt gets almost a billion a year, and Saudi Arabia gets aid from you every time you fill your gas tank. These countries make Israel look as docile and humane as Switzerland.

Dear apologist, that you are trying to divert the focus away from corrupt Israel, is an indication that perhaps even more attention is needed.

I've seen ducks rape and kill other ducks. By your logic, does that make Israel a saint too?

Yes, Israeli politicians are corrupt and changes need to happen and the underclass needs more of a voice and so on and so on and so on.

The point is that regardless of what may happen anywhere else in the world or how good the Israeli underclass (Jews and non-Jews alike) have it as compared to their comrades in the rest of the world, people like Socialist will point to Israel and only Israel.

A comparison would be to take your entire police force and have them write parking tickets at the expense of dealing with violent crime. Does asking for the focus on violent crime make parking violations any less wrong? No, of course not. But if you obsess over parking tickets while you should be focusing more on the violent crime, then something is seriously wrong.

Israel, like any other western democratic multi-ethnic society, has its problems. To deny that is dishonest.

To criticize Israel and only Israel, as Socialist does, is not only dishonest, but smacks of bigotry.

I think it's a fairly important point to make. Sharon is an enemy of peace in the Middle East, he's a right wing emotionalist driving Israel along a destructive path. To show up once again that conservative governments are incompetent at managing the economy is a great point to make. I don't see how speaking up for the Jewish working class smacks of bigotry. The fact is Israel is culturally closer to the West; there is more of a rapport between the working class here and in Israel than there is with the working class in Saudi Arabia. This isn't a matter of selective focus, its a matter of communication. I really don't know how to begin to communicate with the working class in Arab countries as we simply have less in common culturally.

Israel is more than ever focused on because it appears more than ever as an "agent provocateur". It was "imposed" in the middle of Palestine through...YES Terrorism ! Then the first act was to burn 4 palestinian villages between Tel aviv and Jerusalem( just to secure supplies) expropriation was no problem,Israel participated in the colonialist attack against Egypt by the anglofrench troops in 1957.It invaded Lebanon, for two decades. All these against united nation resolutions, and HUMAN decency.Since tens of million of jews live happilly around the world(and apparently for the biliever this is god will) what is the purpose of this trouble maker"state" in the middle of arab land.Specialy when one knows that the parties (fundamentalists)in power are ashkenases from european origine (converted)with no connection to biblical jews (sephardims). Israel is the PUPET of the big "capital",elite, an alibi for the west to police the petrol resources.

Guy: you got your facts wrong. There are no 'tens of millions' of Jews living around the world. There are 5 million in Israel and 8 million outside. A grand total of 13. You erroneous point of Ashkenazi (European origin) Jews not being Jews, but converts is false. It might be that some Eoropeans did convert to Judaism, but small numbers and they are just as Jewish as the others.
You are buying into silly theories.

On the Sharon's attack on the Israeli workers, it is sad. Unemployment is not the faulst of the poor. Blaming the victim is pigheaded and heartless. I wish people will stop defending this thug and try to help the Israeli workers. It is not about 'helping Israel against the Arabs', it is about helping the Israeli poor and unemployed, and sigle mothers against the oppression of a really cynical and oppressive right winger, who couldnt care less about his fellow citizens. Especially about his poor and defenceless citizens.
