Photos and story on the Friday, June 28 demonstration in SF against abuses by the FBI.

Friday, June 28 around 400 people turned out for a demonstration against abuses by the FBI that was held in San Francisco. The demonstration was initiated by the ANSWER Coalition, and was in sympathy with a demonstration that was to be held in Washington, DC June 29. Demonstrators gathered at the tourist area at Powell and Market, then marched up Geary Street to the Federal Building, where the FBI has offices. As the crowd was arriving at the Federal Building, it coincidentally ran into a demonstration by Critical Mass, which was a protest made up of several hundred people on bicycles. The two demonstrations merged for a while in solidarity.

Critical Mass can be seen joining with the anti-FBI rally in the second photo from the bottom.

It looks like a cool and important demo but ahs anyone told Answer that these mass produced signs come off making demos look like they had corporate sponsorship? What about holding a sign-painting party on the night of the march or something? What happened to good old creative individualism?

While I can understand there are logistical reasons for these signs, they feel canned, like microwave dinners - they look real until you sink your teeth in . . .

I love all the printed signs; they demonstrate that we have sufficient organization to sustain many protests over a long period of time. The printed signs all have good messages and are very readable. Of course, it never hurts to have handmade originals, and anyone who intends to attend these demonstrations is always free to make their own sign.

I also love seeing so many people at a civil liberties march, called on a weekday, during the summer, and in the midst of preparing for and participating in the many gay pride celebrations that are taking place this weekend and the previous 2 weeks.

I am certainly thrilled to see so many young people as I am no longer able to run to these demonstrations after work.

This photos are the first news I have of the demonstration, so thank you Independent Media for making the publication of these photos possible.

To the young: Keep going to as many demonstrations as you can. We have to sustain and build the movement to stop war and fascism every chance we get. A big hug to all of you.

Actually, the arrival of Critical Mass was not merely a coincidence. We Massers prefer to call it an organized coincidence. We make our decisions as a group by way of "xerocracy", where a person or group can plan a CM route or ride theme by promoting it with flyers.

There was a route map distributed at the beginning of the ride that had the ANSWER protest as its destination. We didn't reall follow the route but we did make a stop at the federal building to demonstrat solidarity, then moved on.

Its important when disussing the current war and rising police state to remember that oil and its profits are at the heart of the problem.

Next time please consider biking, walking or taking the bus to the demo!
