Explosively tracing the story of a group of underground hip-hop MCs from the mid-80s to the present day, Freestyle The Art of Rhyme, is a critically acclaimed documentary film that explores the world of improvisational rap as a modern day incarnation of the tradition of African-American storytelling called Rap. Shot over a period of more than seven years and counting on 16-mm film & Mini-DV with mostly stolen or borrowed equipment by filmmakers, students, DJ's, and B-Boys, this work-in-progress story is told well by way of two rival MC’s who battled off and on during the mid to early 90’s: MC Supernatural & Craig-G. Both legends in the hip-hop underground, their tale provides the through line by which we explore this world seldom seen. A land where artists re-appropriate English, thus creating a new language of personal and socio-economic empowerment. Also featuring Mos Def, Freestyle Fellowship, Black Thought, Cut Chemist, Juice, Planet Asia, Medusa, and The Living Legends Freestyle is the first American film to counter false notions of hip-hop’s erroneous negative and overly aggressive image This film holds great educational value for hip-hop enthusiasts as well as for those misinformed about hip-hop culture due to its intimate and honest portrayal of hard working independent artists. Through the never ending quest of its characters search for meaning in the contradictions of living "The American Dream"; Freestyle: The Art of Rhyme provides an authentic look into the spiritual life, educational benefits, and historical culture of hip-hop music today!
