Strike & Uprising in Peru; President Suspends Constitution to Fight So-Called "Terror
With two million people on general strike in southern Peru in protest of the government's sale of two public power companies, President Toledo has suspended the constitution to fight so-called "terrorism." Report from Hugo Paredes Fuentes in Peru, received this afternoon by indymedia:
Today the president Alejandro Toledo has declared the suspension of constitutional rights in the south of the country. This is happening because we are protesting against some decisions of the government. Their reaction is to send the army in order to end up the protests. They say we are terrorists but we are more than two million people fighting peacefully for our rights. There would be a slaughter in Arequipa in the next hours. The government in minimizing these news and there is no press to show to the world these terrible acts of Toledo against his own country.
