Mattole Logging Alert!

The Maxxam/ Pacific Lumber Company (PL) has begun logging operations on Rainbow Ridge above the Mattole and Bear River watersheds. The timber harvest plan (thp) called 01-326 or “Cabins” by PL contains mainly second-growth and is scattered along several miles of ridgeline. The thp gets its name from two historic cabins located near the plan. This marks the beginning of logging season for PL in the Mattole. There are many more thp’s in the Mattole watershed that have been approved for cutting. The majority of these plans contain old-growth groves and they threaten to fragment what is left of California’s largest unprotected low-elevation old-growth Douglas fir forest.
