Union hotel workers represented by the Hotel Employees and Restaurant Employee’s Union, Local Two, went on strike against the Marriot Courtyard Hotel at Fisherman’s Wharf June 1st. According to union spokesman Charley Goetchius, “The workers have not had a cost of living raise since 1998.” Housekeeping supervisor Gladys Espinosa stated that the housekeeper’s wages are a dollar an hour lower than those of other hotels and that the quota of sixteen rooms a day is two more than the industry standard. Union organizer Lorraine Powell added that a worker at this Marriott must work a minimum of 32 hours per week to qualify for health benefits, whereas the standard is sixteen hours. Many of the workers cannot meet the 32 hour a week minimum. Powell also stated that the employees lacked a pension plan, and that the contract is on a different schedule than the other hotels in San Francisco. This is the central issue: to bring the Courtyard up to industry standards for treatment of workers. The Marriott Courtyard is located at the corner of Beach and Leavenworth streets. Gladys Espinosa stated, “The strikers are in it for the long haul.” For more information, check out: http://www.marriottcourtyardstrike.org.

Please get rid of the megaphone and the drums. While we the residents of Fisherman's Wharf sympathize with the alledgedly unfair contract negotiations you are dealing with, we are unable to live in peace with the horrible noise the strikers are making day and night. I wake up to people screaming through magaphones at seven in the morning and I go to sleep with drums beating and metal banging. When the weather is warm I can't open my windows because the noise prevents me from reading, listening to music, watching t.v., studying and sleeping.
I am sorry that you are having difficulty getting a fair contract renewed but you are being incredibly unfair to the residents in the area who have done nothing to bring about this terrible life disruption. I am in the process of looking for another flat because your five months of loud noise is unacceptable. You are forcing innocent Wharf residents to move. Is that fair?
I am not asking for you to stop the strike, just to cease using the megaphone and drums. If you really are advocates of finding a place where all sides can be content then please think of the Wharf residents, lose the loud noise makers and let us live in a peaceful neighborhood again.
