The Wisdom of Ann Coulter

After the September 11 attack masterminded by a terrorist hoping to spark a religious war, virtually every official and pundit knew better than to take the bait. Except for conservative commentator Ann Coulter, who wrote in a syndicated column on September 12 that in responding to terrorists "we should invade their countries, kill their leaders and convert them to Christianity." The column outraged the public, but conservatives, including National Review editor Richard Lowry, ascribed Coulter's column to grief over the loss of a friend in the attacks. But the following week, Coulter was at it again: "Congress could pass a law tomorrow requiring that all aliens from Arabic countries leave....We should require passports to fly domestically. Passports can be forged, but they can also be checked with the home country in case of any suspicious-looking swarthy males." This time Lowry spiked her column. Coulter responded by calling Lowry and his staff censorious "girly boys." Lowry then dropped her as a contributing editor. Other conservative leaders also condemned her comments.

What's curious is that Coulter's comments aren't all that different, in tone and style, from hundreds of others she's made over the years. But in the past, her ire was directed at her domestic political enemies---for which she drew fulsome praise from conservatives. Last year, the Media Research Center presented Coulter with its "Conservative Journalist of the Year" award. The Clare Boothe Luce Policy Institute bestowed upon her its annual conservative leadership award "for her unfailing dedication to truth, freedom and conservative values and for being an exemplar, in word and deed, of what a true leader is."

Coulter is spinning her downfall as a new kind of terrorist-war McCarthyism. "People are hysterical about speech right now," she told The Washington Post's Howard Kurtz. "Everyone's comments are being taken out of context and wildly misinterpreted." At the risk of further de-contextualization, here are some of Coulter's past comments:

Coulter begs Fleischer: Have the president read my new book!

At the White House Correspondents Dinner, Ann Coulter pleaded with WH press secretary Ari Fleischer to have President Bush read and publicly carry her new book, "Slander: Liberal Lies About the American Right."

"I will do anything!" she said, according to an account by Gabriel Snyder and Sridhar Pappu. She added: "I'll swear to you you'll like it! I will do anything!"

Coulter told the New York Observer scribes that the D.C. party was divided into "good guys and bad guys." She explained: "Media, bad, Bush administration, good."

PLUS: NYT editors deal with more departures. "I think they're shocked people are quitting," says a source. [Warning: The Observer's site is sluggish today.] (New York Observer)

URGENT NEWS FLASH:
Ann Coulter has offered up her home to become part of the state of Israel. Putting her money where her mouth is, Coulter said that the neighborhood in which she lives can be bulldozed by Israel to make room for Jewish settlements. Coulter said: "My neighbors are kind of pissed at me, but hey, we get a really nice tent city on the edge of the settlements. In a few decades, with United Nations help, we might be able to have sewers and running water again." Upon the arrival of the Israeli settlers, two children in Coulter's neighborhood were accidentally shot in the head by Israeli Defense Forces while trying to get their toys out of what used to be their home. "Hey, thats a shame," Coulter said. "But I think anything else besides this course of action would be fueled by anti-semitism."

i thought that being "conservative" meant that one could not have sexual feelings at all? witness the attempts to shut down hustler magazine, the censorship of mapplethorpe, or the prissy, friuty, stuck up little speeches by the "christian right" about how satanic and evil sex is in general. so, it's funny that you guys on the "right" want to get in this lonely, angry, attention-seeking woman's pants so bad. maybe she could use some sexual healing from a big, strong, manly christian conservative stud? do her the "right" way...

>strong moral definitions<

why don't you lecture us, the hopeless pedophile terrorist "lesbians" that we are your eyes, on these "strong moral definitions".

correct us. train us. inculcate the official line in us. teach us. we're so "lost" without your manly guidance and conservative, righteous, firm-handed leadership.

run for office. go for the gold. become president. pass laws that detail exaclty what's moral and what isn't, what's black and what's white, as you sit there in the oval office telling us that you want "the government not to tell people how to live their lives."

Got an explanation for this, you war mongers?

http://www.theithacajournal.com/news/stories/20020525/topstories/380284.html

"We were told there were no friendly forces," said Guckenheimer, an assistant gunner with the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum. "If there was anybody there, they were the enemy. We were told specifically that if there were women and children to kill them."

The private's mealy-mouthed "clarification:"

>why don't you lecture us, the hopeless pedophile terrorist "lesbians" that we are your eyes, on these "strong moral definitions".

So you don't agree that those things are morally wrong? I certainly don't see the pedophiles, terrorists, or gays getting sympathy from the right. But maybe you do. Let's here some expamples. Or would you rather just sit there with your sardonic tone, saying absolutely nothing.

I love has you focus on "strong moral definitions" as if it were a bad thing.

>correct us. train us. inculcate the official line in us. teach us. we're so "lost" without your manly guidance and conservative, righteous, firm-handed leadership.

Lecture? Nah. I might as well piss into a fan.

>run for office. go for the gold. become president. pass laws that detail exaclty what's moral and what isn't, what's black and what's white, as you sit there in the oval office telling us that you want "the government not to tell people how to live their lives."

The voice of fear. Afraid that her right to munch (and openly flaunt it) might be taken away. Don't worry. We conservatives have got bigger fish (eaters) to fry.

... or maybe you're a female. i don't presume to know on the internet. frankly, i don't know. unlike your presumptions about me.

what's hangin' between my legs isn't made of plastic or rubber. get it? got it? good. your assumption that i am a lesbian or a member of the fairer sex is wrong.

1. >So you don't agree that those things are morally wrong? I certainly don't see the pedophiles, terrorists, or gays getting sympathy from the right. But maybe you do. Let's here some expamples. Or would you rather just sit there with your sardonic tone, saying absolutely nothing.<

why do you presume to believe that i support, along with the entire "left wing", the sexual abuse of children? so people on the left aren't parents...

the "right" would do itself a big favor by not even trying to talk about what it thinks is moral and what isn't. if the "right's" not gonna pass laws on it, then it's really nothing more than their own self-righteous hot air at a $10,000 a plate fundraiser, an attempt to label the entire "left" as "flawed, savage, and uncivilized" and label themselves as "superior, civilized and righteous". in other words, pissing in a fan. no human is perfect. prisons are full of people who got no morals. political party regardless.

... did i call you a lesbian?

did i call you a homosexual?

did i call you a female?

did i call you a male?

DID I PRESUME TO KNOW?

did i go after your supposed sexuality? ever? was your sexuality on the line? was it being questioned? so why is mine? was i the one who brought out that card?

INSTRUCTIONS TO RACER X: why don't you cook up some more derogatory things to call me. feel free. and i'll let you know if you're right. you like to chase things down rabbit holes, so feel free...

I admit it: The only reason I attended the April 20 pro-Palestinian rally
in Washington, D.C., was to cause trouble. Put 50,000
fundamentalist Muslims, angry Arab-Americans, '60s-liberal leftovers and
tie-dyed, 20-something neo-hippies in the same place, and the comedy
potential is too great to pass up.

So on Saturday morning, I parked my car a safe distance away and strolled
toward the Washington Monument. The first thing I noticed was that I had
been the victim of false advertising. This was not a "pro-Palestine"
rally. It was a "Down with Israel and George Bush" rally.

While the throng was thick with banners, very few of them mentioned the
Palestine Authority and none - not one that I saw - mentioned the
Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat. Instead, most of the messages were
condemnations of Israel and Ariel Sharon. One popular motif was mixing the
Swastika and the Star of David, a gruesome image for anyone but the most
ardent Holocaust denier. And just to make sure the point wasn't missed,
the crowd repeatedly chanted, "Sharon and Hitler are the same, the only
difference is their name."

There was no doubt as to what the crowd was against: the "racist" nation
of Israel and the evil government of America and its terrorist leader,
George W. Bush. But what were these people for? Did they really support
the creation of a new Arab Muslim nation led by Arafat?

To find out, I waded into the crowd with my minidisk recorder and started
asking questions.

To Amanda from Atlanta in the "Free Speech, Free Media" T-shirt, I posed
the question: "Which nongovernment-controlled Arab newspaper is your
favorite?" When she couldn't answer, I pointed out that there aren't any
nongovernment-controlled newspapers in the Arab Muslim world.

"Are you comfortable supporting the cause of a group of people who don't
believe in either free speech or a free press?"

"I, uh, really, uh, that's a good question," was the best she could do.

Then I asked the gay-rights advocate with the "From Stonewall To
Palestine: People Fight Back" sign: "Doesn't it bother you that
virtually all Arab Muslim governments outlaw homosexuality? That most of
the people in this crowd think you should be stoned to death?"

"I hadn't really thought about it," he replied.

And of every woman I met protesting on behalf of a new, Arafat-led nation,
I asked: "Do you really want to see yet another Arab Muslim nation where
women have few if any political rights (Kuwait), are lashed for committing
adultery (United Arab Emirates) or are the victims of female genital
mutilation (Saudi Arabia)?"

Vanessa, a liberal feminist from Michigan, answered this way: "That's
their thing, and I disbelieve [sic] in that, but it's not just there.
Women everywhere are captized [sic]." She went on to tell me that all
Americans are "captized" too, but she wasn't exactly sure by whom.

When I asked Amina and Amira, two female Arab students from George
Washington University, they had a novel response: They refused to
acknowledge that any Arab Muslim nations restrict women's rights. I
pointed out the obvious case of Saudi Arabia - where women cannot leave
their homes without permission and can be beaten for showing too much skin
in public. They all but laughed at me: "Saudi Arabia does not have a
Muslim government," Amira told me.
So the Saudis are, what - Lutherans?

As I worked the crowd, I was tailed by a group of Arab gentlemen who
listened in on several conversations before finally confronting me: "Why
are you asking these questions?"

I told them I wanted to know if the people waving their "free speech/free
press/free love/free Mumia" signs understood that they
were at a rally supporting yet another oppressive, theocratic, dictatorial
regime.

"That's none of our business," said Khalid, a Moroccan living in
Massachusetts. "All I want is for the Palestinians to be free. This
is all about freedom." Before I could crack, "Then they should move to
Israel, the only place in the Mideast where Palestinians can
vote," he interrupted again.

"You know what, America's government isn't the best government in the
world. Do you like everything your government does?"

"Of course I don't always like my government," I told him. "But unlike
Arafat, when I say so, my American government doesn't throw me in jail or
kill me. And my government-approved Imam doesn't write editorials for
government-run newspapers urging Muslims to kill Jews."

"That's not killing Jewish people," Khalid said. "It's liberating
Palestinians."

"So, that's what you call it!" I replied.

The conversation was over. I moved on to another strategy. I put down my
recorder and picked up a large, hand-made sign. It read: "HEROES FOR
PEACE: Gandhi, MLK, Arafat."

It was, I thought, the perfect sign. It was parodying the Palestinian
position, but without the obviousness of, say, "Suicide Bombers for
Peace," a sign that might have earned me a bloody nose.

I took my insult to Dr. King and the nonviolence movement, and I marched
into the heart of the crowd. I waved it, I shook it, I
covered the rally from front to back. I pointed it at black ministers in
the crowd and watched them read it. I stood next to "Down with
Israel" signs and held it high. And I waited.

When would someone challenge this obnoxious argument? After half an hour,
someone finally spoke up. A plump, middle-aged liberal with her "Visualize
World Peace" button read my sign, then looked up at me and smiled. "God
bless you," she said.

No, I thought as I walked dejectedly back to my car, God help us.
We're gonna need it.

... i was just rattlin' your chain man. i like messin' with "conservatives", seein' how uptight they are about sex. i like to point out the inconsistency and hypocrisy of the conservative male society when it comes to sex.

on one side, they're the kind of guys who love talkin' bout how "fruity and gay" liberal men are supposed to be, and how supposedly masculine most conservative men are supposed to be, all that overtly chauvenistic male bravado. they're the kind of guys who love talkin' bout women as a piece of ass, their record of how much ass they spanked, "a woman's place is in the home, cookin' and makin' babies", and if you don't refer to women with a similar bravado, you're automatically "gay"...

and on the other side (in some cases it seems 1 man has both sides in him) they're the uptight, "sex makes me very uncomfortable", sex is "ungodly and savage" and should be banned "ashcroft" kind of guy...

nothin' wrong with it. just my opinion. i just think it's loopy, two faced and funny. honey. baby. you so fine...

if leftists are so vacuous why were you unable to mount a counter-argument to mine on the Palestinean thread the other day? I will concede that you are numero uno when it comes to toilet-based epithets. That's quite a skill, really. But when it comes to constructing a reasoned argument and defending it from attack, well, you're basically a retard. The same can be said for Eric, Smash, Racer X and Todd. It goes without saying that most right-wingers are assholes, but are all of you STUPID WITLESS assholes?

If you craft a response please refrain from using the following words: 'sewage', 'toilet overflow', 'asswipe' and 'collaborator'.

Thanks.

Then why do keep talking?

I have no interest in finding common ground with you jo jo. I'm interested -- at this juncture at least -- only in crushing you in debate. You have no interest in debate because you know you will be crushed. So instead you flail around calling your opponents collaborating sewage, toilet overflow (etc etc ad nauseaum). There's a constituency for the type of rhetoric that you employ, but it's relatively small and made up overwhelmingly of stupid assholes like yourself. That's why your side is slipping.

. . ."Yesterday morning at the National Press Club here in Washington, MEMRI held a briefing on Arabic-language media coverage of "martyrdom and suicide bombers." Along with all the usual, scrupulously documented newspaper translations, the group also screened an eye-opening videotape compilation (with English subtitles) of recent broadcasts on something called Iqraa Television. Iqraa is one of the global satellite channels packaged by the Arab Radio and Television Network (ART), a Saudi-based company with transmission facilities in Italy which describes itself as "the leading producer of premium Arabic family programming and entertainment worldwide." Iqraa is ART's effort to provide "a focused insight into the teachings of the Quran" to "intellectual, elite, and conservative Islamic markets." It is widely watched.

And it is hair-raisingly insane. The April 25, 2002 interview with Prof. 'Adel Sadeq, head of the psychiatry faculty at 'Ein Shams University in Cairo, for example. Professor Sadeq beams with glee as he explains how Western civilization "has no concepts such as self-sacrifice and honor," which is why Americans fail to understand that the suicide bomber experiences "the height of ecstasy and happiness" just at the moment when, "ten, nine, eight, seven, six, five, four, three, two, one, and then he presses the button to blow himself up." Big smile.

Then there's the May 9, 2002, program on "discipline in the family," featuring one Jasem Al-Mutawah, an "expert on family matters," who patiently describes to his viewers where on her body, how severely, with what weapon, and under what circumstances a man should beat his wife.

And, most harrowing of all, perhaps, especially if you have kids of your own, there is the May 7, 2002 edition of "Muslim Woman Magazine," hosted by Doaa 'Amer, a soft spoken, highly polished anchorlady who might just as well be Joan Lunden or Katie Couric--except that she's wearing a body-length robe. And also that she's a monster. Ms. 'Amer begins as follows:". . .
