Video - Arrest of 11 year old at Golden Gate Bridge protest

by Jesse
Video - 7.3 MB - Shows the CHP yanking a young girl from the protest, making her fall. They then hold her down by having 3 large officers kneel on her back. Quite a threat she must have been to them...

I was wondering if she, her brother Muso and the others have been released/bailed out yet. Does anybody know? Did I miss an update? That girl needs to go back to her home in Los Gatos, not staying at the CPS, come on, what's going on here? Thanks for the information, everyone

If someone with the software can convert these to RealVideo and repost them as comments, I will replace the links in the post. Right now they should work if you download them and THEN run them but I dont think you can stream avi files.

i think the police had no right to arrest a girl who is probaly half their size!!!
and to add on the police had no right to barge in their when the people paid alot of money to get a permit to do that and then the police tear it up right in front of them!!!!!!!!!!

I am very disrupted to see the footage of this event and how it ended. I wonder if this protest was in support of Jewish/State of Israel cause would it end up the in the same fashion. There is no more freedom of speech in this country anymore. Shame on the CHP and their leaders, they should be flexing their muscles in fighting crimes and violence in the city; but they are bunch of chicken shit.

We're nowhere near done messing the police, the police state, the entities that animate it and the pathetic slugs like you who support it. This is only the beginning. You ain't seen nothing yet. These pigs are headed for civil court. Their crime was caught on camera by the brave and righteous folks of Indymedia. Don't mess with the people's press.

What the fuck, go back to my home country? My home country is the United States, born here and I sound a hell of a lot more American than you do, you boot-licking ass-kissing little punk. In America, we have a right to say what we want and if you disagree, maybe you should get the fuck out and go somewhere that your ignorant narrow views are accepted, maybe you can join the Taliban or something because you are no American, you are a stupid piece of shit.
We have the duty.

/the protesters had a permit to walk across the bridge and back... They were not allowed to have banners, signs or noisemakers... this was supposed to be a peaceful protest... You had banners and signs, people were sitting in the middle of the road blocking traffic, and you were yelling insults frequently in foul language at the police. You put an 11 year old child in the front of your line, who, it is said, was just about the loudest person yelling... so it was her yelling at the police to "get your fucking hands off me". She was witnessed taking a swing at one of the policemen. It sounds like you violated your permit by carrying signs and blocking traffic, you were not "walking", using obsenities while teeling the police to fuck off is not a peaceful protest, and an 11 year old 5'7" girl, who happens to be five inches taller than me, assaulted an officer and you are in the right. Not. Not only did that child and her brother deserve to be arrested, her parents should be also since they knew where she was. Also her mouth should be washed out with soap, she should have to go to court, do whatever time assault on an officer merits and be on probation at least until she proves she can act like a rational adult, which I note is rather lacking in this group. Yes, you have a right to your opinion, no you don't have the right to break laws and attack the police or cause harm to other people to voice them. A peaceful demonstration is just that, peaceful, it does not include yelling insults at the top of your lungs. I agree if you don't like our laws, get them changed (hahaha) or leave.
Never happened. The only people on the road were the cops and the people whose traffic they blocked. Protesters never left the sidewalk.

Are you sure? Okay the girl wasn't arrested on the bridge, so maybe it wasn't her with the foul mouth. Your picture does not actually show the cops hand on the girls butt and it does look like she is trying to get up. I rewatched the videos on this site, excuse me but the videos are pretty bad. Vidoe two does show people with banners on the bridge, on video one people are sitting on the sidewalk, sorry I mistook it for the road, again I'm blaming the bad videos, never-the-less, they are sitting not walking. A man on the tape is saying that they are not going to move until they get their point across. The police repeated told people to move along before they started moving them physically. It looks like you guys forced them into action on purpose, tons of people with video cameras too. Tell me this wasn't a set up to accuse the police of abuse... Mathew's comment at video one says someone reached in his car and hit his son, and you're saying they did that from the walkway? You're right I wasn't there, mostly because I don't happen to agree with you. I disapprove of any group who send their children out to fight their wars for them, and I'm not talking about 18+ either. I don't believe going out and commiting suicide and murdering a bunch of women and children is a legitimate way to get your point across. I don't feel you have the right to harm innocent people for whatever reason you want to come up with. It these groups in Palestine cared so much about the people they say they are fighting for why do they consistently do things that are obviously going to do them harm. People who care about peace don't send their 10-12 year old children out to assault armed police, or their teenagers out to blow up as many people as they can take with them. If you people care so much about innocent people being abused and killed where is your outrage for the couple hundred people burned to death in that church in South America, for the hundreds of people dead by rebels in Sierra Leonne, or several other African countries, the people being kidnapped and getting their heads cut off in the Phillipines, how about the Christians and the French who have recently been killed in Pakistan or the 30 wives and children of Indian soldiers killed in Kashmir? I have read the history, the whole history of Palestine and Isreal, have you?

What to do if you're stopped by The Police

To fight police abuse effectively you need to know your rights. There are some things you should do, some things you must do and some things you cannot do. If you are in the middle of a police encounter, you need a handy and quick reference to remind you what your rights and obligations are.

That's why the ACLU is making these tips available as a downloadable .pdf file. You can photocopy this and carry it in your wallet, pocket or glove compartment to give you quick access to your rights and obligations concerning police encounters.

"ACLU "Bustcard": Pocket Guidelines on Encounters with the Police

Complete instructions for printing the bustcard, and other resources on police reform are also availalble.

Be polite and respectful. Never bad-mouth a police officer.

Stay calm and in control of your words, body language and emotions.

Don't get into an argument with the police.

Remember, anything you say or do can be used against you.

Keep your hands where the police can see them.

Don't run. Don't touch any police officer.

Don't resist even if you believe you are innocent.

Don't complain on the scene or tell the police they're wrong or that you're going to file a complaint.

Do not make any statements regarding the incident. Ask for a lawyer immediately upon your arrest.

Remember officers' badge & patrol car numbers.

Write down everything you remember ASAP.

Try to find witnesses & their names & phone numbers.

If you are injured, take photographs of the injuries as soon as possible, but make sure you seek medical attention first.

If you feel your rights have been violated, file a written complaint with police department's internal affairs division or civilian complaint board.

KEEP THIS CARD HANDY!
IF YOU HAVE A POLICE ENCOUNTER, YOU CAN PROTECT YOURSELF.

1. What you say to the police is always important. What you say can be used against you, and it can give the police an excuse to arrest you, especially if you bad-mouth a police officer.

2. You don't have to answer a police officer's questions, but you must show your driver's license and registration when stopped in a car. In other situations, you can't legally be arrested for refusing to identify yourself to a police officer.

3. You don't have to consent to any search of yourself, your car or your house. If you DO consent to a search, it can affect you, rights later in court. If the police say they have a search warrant,ASK TO SEE IT.

4. Do not interfere with, or obstruct the police -- you can be arrested for it.

IF YOU ARE STOPPED FOR QUESTIONING

1. It's not a crime to refuse to answer questions, but refusing to answer can make the police suspicious about you. You can't be arrested merely for refusing to identify yourself on the street.

2. Police may "pat-down" your clothing if they suspect a concealed weapon. Don't physically resist, but make it clear that you don't consent to any further search.

3. Ask if you are under arrest. If you are, you have a right to know why.

4. Don't bad-mouth the police officer or run away, even if you believe what is happening is unreasonable. That could lead to your arrest.

IF YOU'RE STOPPED IN YOUR CAR

1. Upon request, show them your driver's license, registration, and proof of insurance. In certain cases, your car can be searched without a warrant as long as the police have probable cause. To protect yourself later, you should make it clear that you do not consent to a search. It is not lawful for police to arrest you simply for refusing to consent to a search.

2. If you're given a ticket, you should sign it; otherwise you can be arrested. You can always fight the case in court later.

3. If you're suspected of drunk driving (DWI) and refuse to take a blood, urine or breath test, your driver's license may be suspended.

IF YOU'RE ARRESTED OR TAKEN TO A POLICE STATION

1. You have the right to remain silent and to talk to a lawyer before you talk to the police. Tell the police nothing except your name and address. Don't give any explanations, excuses or stories. You can make your defense later, in court, based on what you and your lawyer decide is best.

2. Ask to see a lawyer immediately. If you can't pay for a lawyer, you have a right to a free one, and should ask the police how the lawyer can be contacted. Don't say anything without a lawyer.

3. Within a reasonable time after your arrest, or booking, you have the right to make a local phone call: to a lawyer, bail bondsman, a relative or any other person. The police may not listen to the call to the lawyer.

4. Sometimes you can be released without bail, or have bail lowered. Have your lawyer ask the judge about this possibility. You must be taken before the judge on the next court day after arrest.

5. Do not make any decisions in your case until you have talked with a lawyer.

IN YOUR HOME

1. If the police knock and ask to enter your home, you don't have to admit them unless they have a warrant signed by a judge.

2. However, in some emergency situations (like when a person is screaming for help inside, or when the police are chasing someone) officers are allowed to enter and search your home without a warrant.

3. If you are arrested, the police can search you and the area close by. If you are in a building, "close by" usually means just the room you are in.

We all recognize the need for effective law enforcement, but we should also understand our own rights and responsibilities -- especially in our relationships with the police. Everyone, including minors, has the right to courteous and respectful police treatment.

If your rights are violated, don't try to deal with the situation at the scene. You can discuss the matter with an attorney afterwards, or file a complaint with the Internal Affairs or Civilian Complaint Board.

There were no banners on the bridge. You either saw people waving banners before they got on the bridge or you saw people holding up shirts with messages on them or the traditional Palestinian head dress (I apologize, I don't know the proper name for it).

Yeah, there were several people sitting. They were sitting in protest because the CHP illegally blocked the march. The permit allowed the demonstrators to march until 2:00 p.m., but CHP arbitrarily stopped the march at 1:35 p.m. and ordered the demonstrators to get off the bridge. Many people decided to engage in civil disobedience to protest the arbitrary and capricious denial of their First Amendment rights.

Whoever claimed a demonstrator reached into a car is lying. When the marchers were returning the cops kept between them and traffic (because they, not the demonstrators, had blocked traffic). Anyone who had allegedly hit someone in a car would certainly have been arrested. No one was arrested for that.

Rhonda, if you're so concerned aboutthe murdering of innocent women and children, why weren't you marching with us? One of the things we were protesting was the murder of innocent civilians in Palestine and Afghanistan. The U.S. government has admitted that at least 4,000 civilians have been killed by their reign of terror in Afghanistan. Or doesn't it bother you when it's the U.S. committing the murders?

islam is a western monotheistic religion. if you were to check, you might discover that judaism christianity and islam all accept the old testament as truth, and islam recognizes jesus etc., but they just add another chapter to the story, sort of like mormonism has a 3rd book.

Rhonda, I hope you are still checking back here. I have spent my spare time the last two days looking at the pictures on this site, watching videos, reading people's discussions, and chasing down links to other articles. There is still information here not yet accessed by me, although I've waded through quite a bit.

I was not at the march in San Francisco, although I did attend some marches in the 1960's and was a participant-observer at the anti-WTO protest in Seattle. My participation consisted in attending conferences with such speakers as Vandana Shiva, Ralph Nadar, and Third World Nations' Representatives to the WTO whose views were ignored by the US, Europe and Japan at the WTO conferences. I also heard several other speakers including a US Congressperson who was there to express solidarity with those protesting the WTO. Perhaps you are unaware the corporate owned media really does control what you are allowed to see, and puts their own spin on the 'reporting.' That is how they control what we think. None of the events I participated in were ever covered by the 'Media,' not CNN, not CNBC, NBC, ABC, CBS, FOX, etc! Yet, there were plenty of cameras around on the streets hoping to see a revolution occur and get squashed. The protesters in Seattle were peaceful, but the media accused them of throwing bottles, rocks and bricks at police. Those were lies. I spent hours everyday watching the 'news' in Seattle after having observed many hours first hand on Seattle's streets. To this day, what my eyes saw firsthand cannot be reconciled with what was 'reported' in print and on the tube. The police were the aggressors, and did everything they could to force a confrontation. The purpose for mentioning this is your opinions about the Bridge March seem, to me, shaped largely by the 'mainstream' (corporate) media. There simply is no substitute for first-hand observations.

The way I understand the events surrounding the interrupted march at the bridge: These people did have a right to march. They did have a permit. They started late. They brought bullhorns and banners to the pre-march rally, which were confiscated by police _before_ they were allowed on the bridge. The police willfully interfered with their Constitutional Rights to free speech and assembly. The marchers non-violently protested the abrogation of their United States Constitutional Rights by sitting on the sidewalk and were physically abused by the police with truncheons and pepper spray, then arrested by the same police who had assaulted them. An 11 year old girl got fed up with being physically pushed around by armor clad officers and vocally expressed her frustration. For this she was summarily thrown face down, cuffed and kneeled on. Perhaps I have not fully understood everything, but suspect my understanding might be more accurate than to think protesters were sitting in the road and striking people in cars.

Aside from the facts no protesters were violent, the police illegally interfered with their march, and none of the protesters (much less an 11 year old girl-child) would have been any match for a highly trained, armed, and armored officer, and the marchers were physically outnumbered by police anyway, lets talk about Rights. Sadly, while we do enjoy certain Rights in America not guaranteed to folks in other countries we are not schooled in how to exercise them. Peaceful protest and even civil disobedience are legitimate forms of expressing our will to our elected officials. A brief aside: It is a shame that if the participants of the Boston Tea Party tried the same stunt today the police would arrest them for vandalism and destruction of property. What they were participating in then was an act of civil disobedience. They made a political statement. The principals are the same today. The difference is the people owning the property live here now rather than in England, so it is in their best interests to erode our Rights to protect their power. Back to the subject: As the marchers were not schooled in peaceful protest they did make some errors, not from maliciousness, but from ignorance about successful peaceful protesting. On the other hand, the police consciously attacked the Rights they are sworn to uphold. Think on that a bit, won't you?

Whether or not we agree with the marchers, they have the same Constitutional Rights we enjoy. When their Rights are stolen, our rights are stolen. Other countries around the world have different sets of Rights for different sets of citizens. In America we pride ourselves on everyone having the same rights. It is in your own best interests as an American citizen to take the Rights of those bridge marchers as seriously as you take you own rights because they are the same! If they lose, you lose. Perhaps the Rights to freedom of speech and to assembly are unimportant to you. I for one cherish every single Constitutional Right my forefathers saw fit to bestow on us.

Finally, your claim to have read the entire history of Israel and Palestine. Which history did you read? There are several. The one I found to be most objective was Arab and Jew by David K. Shipler. It was so evenhanded it won a Pulitzer Prize. If you haven't read it, I'd like to suggest it to you. The Palestinians are not anymore devils than the Israelis are. Not all the Palestinians wear bombs anymore than all Israelis live in occupied territory settlements. Both of those groups are minorities. Most of the Palestinians want peace. Most of the Israelis want peace. The problem is with the radicals on both sides who want to drive the 'enemy' into the sea. Let me give you one example of how Israel is treating the Palestinians you despise for "send[ing] their children out to fight their wars for them."

The Gaza Strip, 28 miles long and four miles wide, is home to 1.2 million Palestinians. Approximately one third of them live in refugee camps. Very briefly, are you aware of how these people came to be refugees? They were driven from their lands during war times and peace times through either fear for their lives, or even at gunpoint by Israeli soldiers. They have not been allowed to return to their homes, some taken by an Israeli Land Authority whose sole purpose it to deprive Arab people of their land for Israeli 'land developments.' 30 percent of the Gaza Strip has been 'settled' by 6000 Israelis. Of course they are not actually living on all the land they require as some of it is used for their special access roads and 'buffer zones.' How about giving those numbers some thought as well? 1.2 million versus 6,000 on how much land? Not supporting any form of terrorism, I find the actions of Israel's military as reprehensible as the actions of HAMAS. Blowing up people at discos is horrible. So, is bulldozing the homes of poor people and shooting boys to death for throwing rocks. Nobody needs to tell those boys to do that. They throw rocks as a form of protest at having been driven from their ancestral homes, having seen their brothers and friends arrested without due process, detained threatened and intimidated by Israeli Shin Beth (secret police like the Nazi SS troops), or having seen their fathers, brothers, or friends killed by the Israeli military. Or, because they saw their home bulldozed.

Here's another question: Are you aware that since Sharon instigated this current mess, two years back, approximately 7 Palestinians have died for every Israeli who has lost a life? Most of the lives lost on BOTH sides were innocent civilians?! Why do you only care about the innocent Israeli lives? Israel is not the "good guys" and Palestinians are not the "bad guys." Both sides have both good guys and bad guys. Unfortunately, the corporate media only gives you one version of the issue and helps maintain continuation of militarism on both sides. This will NEVER lead to a resolution in the Middle East, peaceful nor otherwise. More killing only leads to more killing. The only solution is for Israel to return control of the West Bank and Gaza to the rightful owners, withdraw all Israeli 'settlers' from occupied lands and help rebuild the homes, businesses, hospitals, municipal buildings, jails, schools, water systems, communication systems, etc. they have destroyed. The Palestinians must be allowed self-determination. Both sides need be reeducated to see each other as human beings not enemies! Perhaps before you condemn people you know nothing of, next time you could try asking them why they believe what they believe, and why they are doing what they are doing? The bridge marchers are not your enemy, why are you theirs?
by me
"Are you aware that since Sharon instigated this current mess, two years back"

what exactly did Sharon do?

"approximately 7 Palestinians have died for every Israeli who has lost a life? "

so?? now the Israelis can't even protect themselves? is it wrong to hunt down perpetrators of suicide bombing?

"The Palestinians must be allowed self-determination"

please explain why should Israel be responsible for the 'self-determination' of people who invented themselves in 1967, and that their Arab brethrens have not lifted a finger to help them while they were under their control?
please explain how come the Lebanese and Syrians keep the palestinians in refugee camps.

Please explain why is the west bank ‘occupied land’ and north America is not. Why don’t you consider all Americans as ‘settlers’, is it because CNN didn’t exist two hundred years ago? Where are North America’s indigenous people? If you’re white(or black) – you are not.
