Ignorance Is Their Strength

by Raul Alcaraz (vivaraul [at] sfsu.edu)
A look at the current events in Afghanistan that are not really what they seem. Also, a look at the American elite and corporations that devastate the world.
“War is peace, freedom is slavery, and ignorance is strength.” George Orwell’s quote from his novel, 1984, warns that the world is tricked into believing that they must surrender their freedom and become slaves of the government in order to maintain order in society.

Tragically, this is taking place today. Unfortunately the
elite establishment, or the owners of large economic institutions are the true and sole rulers of the land of the “free.”

But many believe that it's necessary to live in an oligarchy government in order have an orderly society. Thus, the U.S. elite holds concentrated power,
sacrificing itself for the rest of the world to avert total chaos. But tjis couldn't be further away from the truth. The elite only exist to create profits that will only benefit themselves. They could care less as to what happens the ordinary American population.

It's undeniable that we live in a capitalist nation at the mercy of green paper. The elite are aware that growing economic power augments U.S. hegemony. Since the United States is the number one economy in the world with corporations in every part of the earth, it easily has the power to dominate the entire world.

Thus, it’s impossible to discuss America’s economic power without mentioning U.S. imperialism. Clearly, world dominance is the only way the elite can gain greater control and further wealth. It is their means of
not solely preserving their power but also expanding it; capitalism is about rising profits. This is why most industrial assets are controlled by the richest corporations.

Furthermore, the current war in Afghanistan was never America’s response to al Qaeda, nor Islamic fundamentalism. It is one more attempt for the
elite to gain “security of Afghanistan’s oil resources and the beginning of a final conflict before total world domination by the U.S.” This, said by Zbigniew Brzezinski, member of the Council of Foreign Relations (CFR) and former Carter National Security Advisor, is intended to “lead the dissolution of all national governments.” He also explicates that this
will in effect “lead to nation states being incorporated into a new world order, controlled solely by economic interests as dictated by banks, corporations and ruling elites concerned with the maintenance (by
manipulation and war) of their power.” If this doesn’t occur, Brzezinski offers the “alternative of a world in chaos unless the U.S. controls the planet by whatever means are necessary and likely to succeed.”

But this claim is ironic because the U.S. elite is already dooming the entire world only to benefit themselves. From Christopher Columbus’ annihilation of countless indigenous people to Bush’s present genocide of innocent Afghan citizens—it is always the civilians that are slaughtered in the name of growing greed and further power. Their concentrated power makes them relentless, uncontrollable, inevitable beasts that obtain food from the blood and bones of innocent civilians.

According to Bertrand Russell in Readings in U.S. Imperialism, “the riches of the earth are destroyed,
wasted, stolen by the few and used to murder the millions (xv).” This translates more to a new world disorder, than the claims of American dominance as crucial for world stability.

Despite these grave truths, why has the general public
done nothing, or very little to change the current situation in Afghanistan? This is mainly because the media plays a major role in instilling ignorance to the masses in the elite’s benefit. In many ways
the media, especially television, is America’s form of influencing the masses. They are told what to think
and what to care about. Therefore, it is easy to conclude that the media manipulates the unsuspecting public, like a puppet master does a
marionette. Their tired perspectives are intentionally embedded in the general public’s subconscious to turn them into uniformed clones--never meant to think or analyze, much less disagree or revolt.

the American media makes it seem like there are relatively no deaths occurring on the Afghan population. Even despite the fact that “drought, poverty, and war left up to seven million Afghans at
risk of starvation this winter—and (still) the United States attacked” (“Media and Death” by Geov Parrish). The media projects an ironic contradiction that Bush’s goals of eradicating al Qaeda are being accomplished cleanly. The elite’s actions are disguised in the media as actions for the prosperity of all humanity. But, this is a lie because their hidden agenda is reflected in their eyes that only see oil and
their eyeballs are permanently marked with the dollar bill sign.

Thus normally the oil industry shapes our foreign policy. And the mainstream media hides this. Instead they focus their attention on terrorizing the public with future possible terrorist attacks. Therefore, the American population feel they must support the war abroad.

The nation’s elite benefit greatly because they’re aware that public support is crucial for them to continue expanding their dominance to the
rest of the world and to keep rubbing their hands in infinite pots of gold. Yet ultimately nothing is being done to protect the nation from terrorist attacks. It's more likely to endanger all of us and creating more angry Osama bin Ladens.

This is why its time the nation wakes up from the seemingly perpetual dream. They need to realize that it's actually a nightmare.

The U.S. clearly devastates a planet that is eternally obsessed with money and market exchange, (the main cause of world chaos). For this reason, I believe the world’s inequalities would dissipate if America’s power weren’t concentrated among the economic elite, but instead distributed to the common people of the United States and abroad. I denounce the elite’s excessive power that is the root cause of world-devastation. Consequently, why not have a world without capitalism and without an oppressive government?

A civilian struggle is necessary to get rid of the elite’s black suitcase of tyranny. Undoubtedly 6 billion people’s indignation and action is sufficient enough to revolutionize the hegemonic, oligarchic world order that only benefits the selected few.
