Protester Detained For Carrying Palestinian Flag

Thanks for showing what our protest was about with that excellent flag - I can pass this picture around and people will know.

That was the most moving march that I've been a part of. And as you can see, the struggle has been made around free speech on the bridge and the authorities have been exposed despite their attempt to use the "stuck in traffic" thing to detract people from our message when as everyone who was there could see - they blocked the traffic.

The Palestinian families who came out and challenged the US government are very courageous and we must fight for the charges to be dropped against Sophia, Musa, and all the protesters.

This march was also different because it was clearly upholding the leadership of oppressed people themselves and not contolled by some reactionary white left group who may be able to pull off a big rally with all their funding but didn't have the heart to come out for this.

Let's build a real MASS movement!!

People flying American flags from their SUV antennas (violating the Flag Code!) are okay; people carrying Palestininan flags aren't. People walking across the bridge are alright, unless they have the gall to say something the authorities don't like. And what about that airplane flying around the Bridge with the banner: "U.S. and Israel, Partners Against Terror"? If it had been flying with a banner declaring (accurately), "U.S. and Israel, Partners In Terror", do you think the CHP helicopter would have let it continue? Hell no, they'd have radioed for the Air National Guard to force it down!

Sorry I (one of those despised white leftists) was late, but the CHP was tying up traffic pretty bad (and blaming it on the protest, of course - even though the protesters were walking on the pedestrian walkway and not blocking anybody, as all the pictures and video document).

I got there just in time to see Adib brought into the cop shack, and hung around until he was released. At that point, the demo was already halfway across the Bridge, and getting jumped on.

If I'm bad for being where I was instead of where you were, then so were all the other folks who were there too.

I'm English and attended the last pro-Palestian march in the England were 50,000 people turned up all allowed to carry Drums, Loudspeakers, Banners, Flags whatever they liked and marched thru traffic all the way to Trafalgar Square.

Odd I thought it was America that stood for freedom isn't that what Bush keeps telling me? All I see is Tyranny.

I have been to plenty of demos and marches in the UK and never once have banners or flags been banned. Isn't the banner a fine expression of freedom of speech. Isn't it the whole point of a demonstration to give an opportunity those who feel their voice is not heard nor repressented by the powers that be to feel like they can be heard and can express their views?

All this censorship leads to is radicalisation when you take away peoples voices some inevitably feel the push to make themselves heard in other ways.

To those who think this is just whining someone once said... "It's alright now when its my freedom their taking away, you do nothing now but what happens when its your freedom their taking who'll help you then"

The only time I remember flags being banned in the UK was when the Chinese President came to London and Tibetan flags were banned which caused a massive uproar in the press. Maybe there's a great example of were Americas headed the Chinese way.

You should remember that the Golden Gate bridge is not just a bridge, it is also a major highway (US 101) that, even on the best of days, is quite narrow and dangerous. The "no flags and banners" prohibition was made because they are considered to be too distracting to the drivers crossing the bridge. Notice that the flags were allowed *off* the bridge, just not allowed to be carried on.

The same reasoning was used by the CHP to remove text banners off of overpasses last fall, when people were not just satisified with hanging American flags, but started writing long messages.

It appears that the US government has taken a page from the Nazi Gestape training manual and put it into practice. The banning of any flags that represent unpopular or politically incorrect countries or beliefs is but the first step towards the police/totalitarian state that suppresses any ideas that the authorities fear may expose the hypocrisy and underlying destructiveness of their coercive system of thought control. The edict that issues from the mouths of the propagandists that dissension and questioning the commands of the powers that be is tantamount to disloyalty and giving aid an d comfort to the terrorists. Furthermore, they assert that we must now surrender some of our precious freedoms in exchange for safety in the war on(or rather of) terror. This is analagous to an example of the Fire department saying to the homeowner "Please understand, we need to burn down your house to protect it from arsonists. Trust us, it's really for your own good..." These freedoms contained in the Bill of Rights that we are asked to relinquish to the authorities are like the house that gives us some measure of shelter from the forces that would employ all that is in their arsenal to harm and control us. If we believe that we are exempt from the same consequences that befell other nations that trod down the same path in the recent past because of a belief in our divine province, then we are quilty of the same shortsightedness and arrogance. If we as a people do not shake ourselves from this torpor that grips us we risk being the sheep that contentedly chew the grass oblivious to the slaughter that awaits us, instead of the deer that is constantly vigilant and alert to signs of danger. One, through its dulled complacency will allow itself to be killed, while the other sees the danger and runs away from it. Selective freedom of speech is not free speech. all opiniions and ideas must be allowed expression otherwise, we will become the 21st century Imperial Rome/Nazi Germany.

Christine, While I admire your sense justice and share in your outrage of what is being done in the name of America, I can't agree with being ashamed to be American. I still recall the 50's 60's and the 70's. I recall going to rallies. I recall drinking from the "colored" fountains. And, I recall people being "ashamed about being white" Instead of being ashamed, take action! Europe and the Muslim war against the Jews

The Islamic cocktail of fanatical religious passion, Jew-hatred, and warlike zeal has been further inflamed by the violently anti-Israel coverage in most of the European media

The rising tide of anti-Semitic vitriol across Europe with synagogues burning in Paris, London and Marseilles, and the old pogromist cry of "Death to the Jews!" once more echoing from Brussels to Kiev has shocked many in Israel and the Diaspora. Such hostility has not been seen since the end of World War II and has exposed the dormant genocidal demons still lurking beneath the civilized veneer of Europe, as well as the hollowness of its pretensions to moral superiority. Much less attention has been paid, however, to the massive Muslim contribution to this wave of anti-Semitism which in Europe and the West has found its most enthusiastic supporters among recent Arab and Muslim immigrants. Since October 2000, there has been an alarming rise in the number of anti-Semitic assaults on Jewish communities around the world for which young Muslims have been responsible and nowhere is this more apparent than in France. These new immigrants carry with them anti-Semitic baggage from their mother countries and Islamic culture.

Their hatred is further reinforced by the malevolently Judeophobic sermons heard in their local mosques or the scenes of "martyrdom" continually relayed by satellite TV programs from the Middle East. This highly explosive cocktail of fanatical religious passion, Jew-hatred, and warlike zeal sentiments perfectly encapsulated in the concept of Jihad (Holy War) has been still further inflamed by the violently anti-Israel coverage of the Palestinian intifada in most of the French and European media.

Not only that, but the Muslim war against the Jews, especially in Europe, is also fuelled by their feelings of alienation, exclusion, and marginalization largely the product of an unsuccessful integration into the majority culture. Many Muslims see themselves as victims of European racism and displace their rage against the far more successful Jews whose influence they tend to exaggerate. Their frustrations and resentment have led to an intense though vicarious identification with the Palestinian victims of "Israeli aggression." Meanwhile, the Jews particularly in France with the growing spectre of Le Pen adding fuel to the flames find themselves caught between the new Islamic Judeophobia, the anti-Arab xenophobia (anti-Semitically tinged) of the Front National, and the Israelophobia of much of the European mass media.

ONE OF the paradoxes of the present situation is that only with the electoral success of Le Pen have the Western media begun to acknowledge (though somewhat grudgingly) that anti-Semitism is indeed a problem, though wherever possible it is subordinated to the wider issue of racism and anti-racism. But when it comes to Muslim anti-Semitism, the West inexplicably looks the other way.

The ubiquity of Muslim incitement against Jews from Cairo to Damascus, Baghdad, Teheran, and Lahore is barely commented upon. Its direct connection to the terrorist war of the Islamists against Israel and the West is underplayed, if it is mentioned at all. Even the deluge of venomous Judeophobia widely available in Arab and Muslim bookshops and on video cassettes in Europe itself, is rarely investigated though it clearly amounts to a culture of incitement. Holocaust denial material, when sponsored, promoted, or disseminated by Muslims, arouses only a small ripple of interest yet the same phenomenon when it can be linked to neo-Nazis or neo-fascists is most extensively covered by the Western media.

Another virtually taboo subject is the close resemblance between Nazi and Islamic anti-Semitism. This is apparent in the visual imagery of the Arab press which endlessly indulges in hideous stereotypes of Jews reminiscent of the classic Nazi propaganda rag, Der Stuermer.

Muslims have largely taken over the Nazi conspiratorial view of world Jewry as a giant octopus controlling the world's wealth and mass media, manipulating the US, fomenting wars and revolutions, and seeking to dominate the planet by subverting all rivals especially Islam. Israel, in particular, is portrayed as the incarnation of evil, populated by criminal racists and Shylocks in military uniform, whose policies include spreading drugs, vice, prostitution, AIDs, and the cultural poisons of modernity into Muslim society. From there it is but a small leap to embracing the idea that all the Jews of Israel should be eliminated. Hence the widespread glorification among Palestinians, Arabs, and millions of Muslims of the suicide bombers who deliberately target innocent Israeli civilians. But to discuss these causes and effects would, it appears, be most inconvenient to the good conscience of many self-righteous Europeans. After all, only 60 years ago the unquenchable hatred we are now seeing on the Muslim street was also rampant among the peoples of Europe whose complicity and in many cases active collaboration made the Nazi extermination of Jews possible.

But the impeccably "anti-racist" and humanist Europeans of today prefer not to recognize their handiwork in the perverted and genocidal ideology of Islamist anti Semitism, for which historically they bear considerable guilt.

Instead they stand by almost silently when they are not actively denying the existence of Muslim Jew-baiting or trying to excuse it as a purely political act of "resisting the (Israeli) occupation." This trivializing response to the Muslim war against the Jews (which has its counterparts in Israel and the Diaspora) reminds me of the failure of the West to effectively counter Nazi anti-Semitism. It smacks of appeasement, cowardice, and a failure to confront Europe's inner demons which have instead been projected with almost hysterical fury against the alleged sins of the Jewish State.

But the "original sin" of European racism will not be so easily exorcised, and deflecting it against Israel is likely to prove as suicidal as the exploding bombers who are wrecking the Palestinian cause.

I studied some of the world's religions while in college, and can tell you that I thought Islam was one of the more enlightened religions (I'm not a big fan of ANY organized religion, but that's a different subject).

The problem, in any religion, lies at the fringes - as you probably know even the most carefully written text can be interpreted by extremists to support their cause (i.e. - fundamentalist Christians quoting the Bible to excuse the killing of doctors that perform abortions).

This applies to Islam as well. The quote I was initially responding to is, in my opinion, one of those expressed by someone on the outside of mainstream Islamic thought. I hope so anyway - because if THAT is mainstream thought, we're (speaking as a Westerner) heading towards a religious/cultural war with the Muslim world.

Very few non-Muslim Westerners are even aware of the ongoing struggle between mainstream and Fundamentalist Islam. Muslims don't like to air out their dirty laundry. We try to clean things quickly, inorder to not allow the smell to discomfort others.
We are not in support of regimes who oppress the people.That is why we migrate away from those countries. Our greatest struggle will be against Fundamentalist Islam because the west (America) continues a foreign policy that creates poverty in the world. In the realm of creation , Islam makes a clear distinction: There is God and everything besides Him. With created things ( the everything besides him ), there are two basic categories:whatever is surrendered to God's will and whatever is resisting His will. You are either following God's way or the wrong way. All inanimate matter, such as rocks, comets, water, and even atoms, follows well-defined natural laws regarding their motion, atomic structure, properties and qualities. Islam holds that God established all natural laws and thus every physical material in the universe is surrendered to His will - that is, everything does what it was created to do. In that vein of thought,then, the entire nonliving universe is considered to be surrendered to God. The whole universe follows Islam.
Thus, the Qur'an states that the entire physical universe is Muslim. How can this strange statement be explained? If the word Islam means to surrender to Allah (God) and to acquire peace, then someone or something that does this is called a Muslim, or surrendered one. This is how the label "Muslim" can be applied to things other than people. Note the similarity between the word Islam and Muslim. Both have the letters S, L, and M. The way Arabic works is simple. You take a base of consonants that have a plain meaning ( a root word ) and then you add or subtract prefixes and sufixes and alter the vowel patterns to form new, related words. Think about the English word "cover". You can have ; covered, recover, unrecoverable, covering, uncovered, undercover, and so on. Arabic works in a similar fashion. So the name of the religion is Islam and a person or thing that follows Islam is called a Muslim, or surrendered one, and because the word is generic it can be applied to non-living things as well - whatever follows God's will ( Islam ) is a Muslim.
For me, as a Muslim, Islam is not a mere belief - system, an ideology or religion. But a total way of life. A complete system governing all aspects of my existence, both individually and collectively. Freeing me from the material and animal human urges.
However i am portrayed ,is mainly due to lack of understanding resulting huge inaccuracies.The Western media, for reasons which are questionable, distorts not only the details of the Islamic system, but also the fundamental concepts and teachings of the religion.
In history, Islam and Christendom confronted each other as enemies during the Crusades and afterwards. And the propaganda against the enemy and it's beliefs and way of life which is common during times of conflict, whether it be true or false has never been laid to rest in the Western world. The confused and distorted picture of Islam ,is also partly due to the behavior of many Muslims, those who profess this faith but do not live by it, often doing everything which it does not permit and doing nothing which it requires. Also, many people in the Western world ,think of any religious system in terms of Christian concepts and values and also undoubtedly due to the fact that many people in the West, particularly in America ( like yourself ), have such an unquestionable conviction of the innate superiority and rightness of the American or Western way of life that they do not consider it necessary or important to be accurately informed about others' viewpoint and ways of life.
We live in an age of tremendous upheaval and uncertainty. People everywhere are groping anxiously for something that can save humanity. It seems to have lost it's way and is on the brink of unprecedented disaster. It may be true today we live in an era of the ultimate in material civilization in progress, but in the realm of values and morals mankind appears to be close to bankruptcy. If i surrender to becoming American will these problems go away? I think not. Becoming American will not broaden my concepts, beliefs and attitude towards life.Towards myself and other human beings, towards the universe. To develope a personality, a distinctive human, interacting and developing and ultimatly contributing in worship to my creator, family life, manners, living habits, and so on in relation to all aspects of life.

These protestors were held because their permit timing would have expired before they could complete their trip across the bridge. This is a very *disruptive* type of protest that holds up traffic. If these guys can't get their schedules organized right, then they should be stopped and they were. We're not all working on their time.

It was the CHP that blocked 1, 2, and finally all lanes of traffic in order to arrest the protesters. Why were they arrested? Were they carrying signs or flags, disrupting traffic, molesting the police, stopping foot traffic?

No. The CHP decided that the protest should be ended early, at 1:35, and arrested people for "moving too slowly" and "breaking the rules of the permit" which clearly stated that they had to exit the bridge at 2:00 -- not 1:35. And why were the protesters moving slowly while retreating from the bridge? Simply because the CHP chose to herd 150 people from the rear, pushing them with batons and using pepper spray, knocking over more than a few people.

It was the police that acted in a dangerous and irresponsible manner and breaking the rules of the legally granted permit.
